Can I reapply for NY unemployment after exhausting my benefits?

I just used up all my NY unemployment benefits last week. My benefit year doesn't end until May 2025 (started May 2024), but I've received all 26 weeks already. I'm still struggling to find work in my field and not sure what to do now. Can I reapply for unemployment again right away or do I have to wait? Has anyone successfully reapplied after exhausting benefits? Getting desperate here as bills are piling up.

You cant reapply till your benefit year ends. Once you use up your 26 weeks thats it until May 2025.

Thanks for the info. That's what I was afraid of. Do you know if there are any extensions available for 2025?

Unfortunately, there aren't any regular unemployment extensions available in New York right now. You're generally limited to the 26 weeks within your benefit year. However, you should check if you qualify for other assistance programs: 1. SNAP benefits (food stamps) 2. HEAP for heating assistance 3. Temporary Assistance (if you have dependents) Also, visit your local career center - they can help with job search resources and sometimes know about training programs that include stipends.

I'll definitely look into those other programs. I've been mainly focusing on unemployment, but I guess I need to cast a wider net now. The career center is a good idea too - thank you.

I went through this last year. The 26 weeks is a hard limit unless there's a federal extension program (which there isn't right now). BUT what nobody tells you is that you CAN apply for a new claim if you worked during your benefit year and earned enough in a quarter to qualify for a new claim. I worked part-time for 3 months while on partial unemployment, and that allowed me to file a new claim even though my benefit year hadn't ended.

Oh that's interesting! I did work for about 6 weeks between claims, but I'm not sure if that's enough to qualify. Do you know what the minimum earnings have to be?

I think you need to have earned at least $2,600 in one quarter, and worked in at least two quarters. But the exact amount changes, so check the NYSDOL website. My new weekly benefit amount was lower than my original one since it was based on part-time work, but it was better than nothing!

THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT US!!! I exhausted my benefits too and called them 67 TIMES trying to see if there were extensions. Nobody picked up EVER. The whole system is designed to LOOK like they're helping but they're NOT. The politicians just want to say they're helping the unemployed but once you exhaust benefits they throw you away like GARBAGE!!!!

I know it's super frustrating. Have you tried calling right when they open? I've heard that's the best time to get through.

Tried EVERYTHING!!! Early morning, late afternoon, different days. It's IMPOSSIBLE to get anyone on the phone. They don't want to help us!

I had the same issue last year and was finally able to reach someone using Claimyr (claimyr.com). They have a system that basically waits on hold for you and calls you back when an agent is available. Saved me hours of frustration. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE The agent confirmed what others have said - you can't get an extension unless there's a federal program in place, but they did help me apply for other benefit programs I didn't know I qualified for. Worth the call just to know all your options.

Thanks for the tip! I've been trying to call them all morning with no luck. I'll check out that service - at this point I just need to talk to a real person to understand all my options.

i tried claimyr last month when i had issues with my claim. worked pretty good but the agent still couldnt help with extending benefits. they just dont have extensions now unless theres some special program

Have you tried applying for partial benefits? If you can find even part-time work, you might still qualify for some unemployment if you earn under a certain amount each week. That's what I did when I exhausted my benefits last year - found a 20hr/week job and still got a small unemployment payment.

I hadn't thought about that approach. So you're saying if I find part-time work, I might still qualify for some partial benefits even though I've used up my 26 weeks? Or would I need to wait until I'm eligible for a new claim?

Sorry, I should have been clearer - you'd need enough work history to qualify for a new claim. The partial benefits only work during your active benefit period. My bad!

Good suggestion about 211. I'll give them a call too. And definitely looking into SNAP and Medicaid now.

Since several people have mentioned it, here's clarification about qualifying for a new claim. For NY unemployment in 2025, you need: 1. At least $2,800 in wages in one calendar quarter of your base period 2. Wages in at least two calendar quarters 3. Total wages of at least 1.5 times your high quarter earnings If you worked during your benefit year and meet these requirements, you can potentially file a new claim even if your benefit year hasn't ended. Your weekly benefit amount would be based on these new earnings. Also, reach out to your state assembly member's office - they sometimes know about special programs or can help with your case.

Thank you for breaking this down so clearly! Based on my calculations, I don't think I earned enough during my part-time work to qualify for a new claim. The assembly member suggestion is great - I hadn't thought about that route.

i was in your shoes 2 months ago. ended up doing gig work (doordash, uber) just to get by. not great money but at least its something while looking for real work. the unemployment system really leaves people hanging once benefits run out

I've been considering gig work too. How has the pay been with DoorDash? Is it enough to cover basic expenses? I'm trying to figure out if it's worth getting a car for.

its ok money if u already have a car but dont buy one just for this. i make about $15-20/hr before gas and wear on my car. better off finding literally any part time job probably

After searching through all of this, it seems your options are: 1. Find work (even part-time) to establish new earnings for a potential new claim 2. Apply for other assistance programs (SNAP, HEAP, Medicaid, etc.) 3. Look into training programs through your local career center 4. Contact your assembly member for specialized help Unfortunately, there's no way to extend beyond the 26 weeks without new qualifying wages or a federal extension program. The system really does have a hard cutoff.

Thank you for this summary. It's helpful to see all my options laid out clearly. I guess I need to focus on finding any work I can get for now, while applying for those other assistance programs to bridge the gap. Not what I was hoping for, but at least I have a plan now.
