Can you reapply for unemployment after 26 weeks in NYS?

My regular unemployment benefits exhausted about 3 months ago after hitting the 26 week limit. I'm still looking for work but haven't found anything stable yet. Can I reapply for unemployment after 26 weeks or do I need to wait a certain period? I worked for 2 years at my last job before getting laid off, so I should have enough work history. Just confused about the reapplication process and if there's a waiting period between benefit years.

Yes, you can file a new claim after your benefit year ends, but you'll need to have worked and earned wages since your last claim started. The NYS Department of Labor requires you to have sufficient wages in your new base period. If you haven't worked since being laid off, you probably won't qualify for a new claim until you get some employment.

That's what I was afraid of. I did some gig work but probably not enough to qualify. Do you know how much you need to earn?

i think you need like $2400 in wages or something like that but don't quote me on it. best to just apply and see what happens, worst case they say no

The wage requirement is actually $2,600 in your highest quarter of the base period, plus total wages of at least 1.5 times your high quarter amount. Without sufficient new wages since your last claim, you won't be eligible for a new benefit year. You might want to look into other assistance programs while you continue job searching.

I had a similar situation last year and couldn't get through to NYS Department of Labor to get a clear answer about my wages. Kept getting disconnected or put on hold forever. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to actually reach an agent who could look up my wage credits. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Way easier than trying to call yourself.

This whole system is so confusing! Why can't they just let you reapply automatically after 26 weeks? It's not like jobs are easy to find right now. I'm in a similar boat and don't understand why we have to jump through all these hoops just to get basic help.

my cousin went through this exact thing. had to wait until she got a new job and worked for a few months before she could file a new claim. it sucks but thats how the system works i guess

I went through this same situation about 6 months ago. You definitely need to have worked and earned new wages since your benefit year started to qualify for a new claim. The earnings requirement Isabella mentioned is correct - $2,600 in your highest quarter plus total wages of at least 1.5 times that amount. I'd recommend checking your online account or calling to see what wage credits you have on file. Even if you don't qualify for regular UI right now, you might be eligible for other programs like SNAP or emergency assistance while you continue job searching. Don't give up - the job market is tough but there are resources available to help bridge the gap.

Thank you for the detailed breakdown, Ethan! This is really helpful. I'm new to navigating the unemployment system and wasn't aware of the specific wage requirements. It sounds like I should definitely check my wage credits first before applying. Did you find the SNAP application process easier than dealing with unemployment? I'm wondering if I should look into that while I continue job hunting, since it seems like I probably don't have enough new wages to qualify for a new UI claim right now.
