The research shows unemployment increases poverty rates because it depletes savings, forces asset liquidation, and creates gaps in employment history that make future hiring more difficult. NYS Department of Labor benefits provide a safety net but it's deliberately temporary and insufficient for long-term stability. The expectation is quick reemployment, but economic realities often don't align with that timeline.
The unemployment system is BROKEN! Six months and you still can't find work? That's not your fault, that's the economy being rigged against working people. NYS Department of Labor keeps talking about low unemployment but those numbers don't reflect people who've given up looking or are underemployed in gig work.
Don't give up! I was unemployed for 8 months before landing my current job. The key is treating job searching like a full-time job itself. I know the NYS Department of Labor only requires 3 job contacts per week but I was doing 10-15. Also make sure you're keeping detailed records in case they audit your job search log.
The unemployment system is so messed up honestly. They make it seem like there's all these different categories but really it just comes down to whether they want to approve you or not. I've seen people get denied for the stupidest reasons and others get approved when they probably shouldn't have.
From my experience, the most straightforward cases are mass layoffs, plant closures, and end of temporary assignments. Individual terminations get more scrutiny. Make sure you have documentation of your separation and be honest about the circumstances when you file.
dont forget about people who get fired for stealing or fighting or showing up drunk. thats misconduct and disqualifies you completely. also if you quit to move somewhere else without having a job lined up first
Thanks everyone. Sounds like my issue is probably the base period since I only started working in March. Going to try filing for the alternate base period and see what happens. Wish they made this stuff clearer from the start!

The whole unemployment system is a social issue! When businesses lay people off in waves like they've been doing, it creates this massive burden on NYS Department of Labor that they're just not equipped to handle efficiently. Then we all suffer with delays while they scramble to catch up.

•You're right that sudden increases in unemployment create systemic challenges. The good news is that even when processing is delayed, benefits are typically backdated to your filing date once approved.

I experienced something similar during the 2008 recession when I was laid off from manufacturing. Took almost 2 months to get my first payment because so many people were filing at once. The social aspect definitely impacts individual claims - when everyone in your industry or region gets hit at the same time, the system gets overwhelmed.
