i had something similar happen and it was bcuz they found out one of my employers had reported incorrect wages. Took like 5 weeks but eventually got a pretty decent chunk of money backdated. just wait it out or try to get someone on the phone if ur anxious about it.
Fun fact: the NY unemployment system still runs on COBOL programming from the 1970s. That's why these 'recalculations' and weird messages happen - the system is literally ancient. 🦖
that explains why the website looks like it was made before the internet existed lol
No wonder it takes them 6 weeks to make a simple change to your claim. They're probably using punch cards to update the system 💀
I've been dealing with NY unemployment for 18 months and here's what I can tell u: DOCUMENT EVERYTHING. Take screenshots of your payment history before and after the negative amount. Save any emails or messages. Write down names of anyone you speak to. You'll need all this if you have to appeal.
just throwing this out there but have u moved recently? sometimes when your address changes they can flag your account for verification and hold payments
I did actually move about 3 months ago! But I updated my address in the system right away.
Look at your original tax return and check how much unemployment compensation was reported on line 7 of Schedule 1. Then check if you received the full 10.2% of that amount. If not, definitely challenge it.
Yo I thought they were done issuing these unemployment tax refunds??? I never got mine at all and was on unemployment for half of 2022. Now I'm worried I missed out completely 😳
Unpopular opinion but you might just need to wait it out. My backpay randomly appeared after 7 weeks with no warning or explanation. The system is working through a HUGE backlog.
Watch out - if they coded your claim wrong initially, they might not even know you're eligible for those earlier weeks. I had to literally explain to the agent that I had been laid off in March not May because someone entered my info wrong.
How would I know if they coded my claim wrong? Is there somewhere I can see that info?
On your payment history page, check the "effective date" of your claim. That should match the date you became unemployed. If it doesn't, that's your problem right there.

Random but I was at my absolute breaking point with NY unemployment (similar situation - kept getting different answers) until I found a way to skip the hold time using claimyr.com. Sounds like you need to talk to a specialist who can actually see both of your claims in the system, not just the regular frontline people. Good luck!

I had something similar w/ them owing me for February. What finally worked: call exactly at 7:58am (right before they open), navigate the menu slowly so you hit the final option right as the clock strikes 8:00. I got through to a senior agent who fixed everything in 10 min.
