< Back to New York Unemployment

Unemployment took back my entire $1,189 payment from August 20th with two negative transactions - why is my balance now $0?

So I just checked my account and saw something strange in my payment history. On 08-20-2021 I had a regular payment of $1,189.58, but then on 08-30-2021 there's a negative payment of -$1,178.00! My account balance shows $0.00 now, and there was another weird small negative charge of -$11.58 on the same day. Here's what my account history shows exactly: 08-20-2021: $1,189.58 (regular payment) 08-30-2021: -$1,178.00 (negative payment) 08-30-2021: -$11.58 (another negative charge) 08-30-2021: $0.00 (current balance) I haven't received any notification or letter explaining what happened. Does this mean they're saying I owe them money or something? It looks like they took back exactly the amount they paid me, split into two separate transactions that add up to my original payment. The timing is strange too - they paid me on the 20th and then took it all back 10 days later. I was approved months ago and have been receiving benefits normally until now. Has anyone else seen negative amounts in their payment history like this? I tried calling but can't get through to a real person. The whole thing is concerning since my balance is now $0.00 which makes me think my benefits might have been terminated for some reason.

This happened to me too! It means they determined you were overpaid and now they're taking back the money. Check your messages in your account or watch your mail for a determination letter explaining why. You have 30 days to appeal once you get the letter if you think they're wrong.

Ugh I was afraid of that. I havent gotten any letters yet though. How long did it take for yours to arrive after seeing the negative balance?

0 coins

It took about 10 days for mine. NY unemployment system is slooooow with everything. You might want to call and ask them to explain it before the letter arrives.

good luck getting through on the phone lol. Been trying for 2 weeks straight 🤡

I finally got through to a rep about my negative balance issue by using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). It let me skip the phone queue and got a callback with an actual agent on the line. Talking to the agent got my $ situation resolved in one call - turns out mine was a system error! They fixed it and reissued my payment. Best investment ever after weeks of getting nowhere. Check out their demo here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Does this actually work? I've been trying to get through to ny unemployment for like 3 weeks now

0 coins

Yeah it worked for me! They call for you and when they get someone on the line, they connect you. Saved me hours of hold music hell

0 coins

idk sounds kinda sketchy...another 'miracle solution' 🙄

0 coins

Not sketchy at all. They just help you skip the phone queue. The actual conversation with unemployment is just between you and the agent.

just tried it and got through to someone in 40 mins after trying for days on my own. they actually explained my negative balance - turns out I had reporting income wrong 😭

Negative balance usually means one of three things: 1. You reported income incorrectly for some weeks and they're reclaiming overpayment 2. They determined you weren't eligible for some reason after initially approving you 3. System error (happens more than you'd think) Either way, you need to talk to an actual human ASAP. If you wait too long to address it, they might start garnishing future wages or tax refunds. When I had this problem last year, I used claimyr.com to get through to an agent quickly instead of trying to call hundreds of times myself. The agent was able to explain exactly what happened and tell me my options for appeal or payment plan. Also check your online account for any new documents or determinations - sometimes they post stuff there before mailing it. And definitely appeal within the deadline if you think it's wrong!

Thank you for the detailed response! You're right, I need to talk to someone ASAP. I'll check my online documents now.

How long does the appeal process take? I'm in a similar situation

0 coins

Appeals can take 2-3 months to get resolved in NY these days. The system is still backed up from covid times.

the EXACT thing happened to me, almost same amount too. Found out they audited my claim and decided i wasnt eligible for a certain period. had to set up a payment plan to pay it back 🤦‍♂️

0 coins

hate to be that person but make sure you didn't miss any weekly certifications or accidentally report something wrong. I had a negative balance when I forgot to report some part time work and they caught it in a quarterly review.

0 coins

I did pick up a small freelance gig but reported it correctly (I thought). Maybe that's related.

0 coins

Freelance work is a HUGE red flag for them lately. They've been super strict about proper reporting of self-employment income. Double check you calculated it right.

0 coins

this is why i keep DETAILED records of everything. screenshots of every certification, copies of all letters, notes from every phone call. NY unemployment system is a mess and they make mistakes ALL THE TIME. don't just assume they're right about the overpayment.

0 coins

THIS!!! I had to fight an overpayment notice for 3 months but eventually won because I had proof they were wrong.

0 coins

Check if this is related to the end of federal benefits programs. Sometimes they miscalculate when transitioning people back to regular state benefits.

0 coins

That negative amount is weirdly specific - not a round number. Makes me think it could be related to taxes. Did you have them withholding taxes and maybe they adjusted something?

0 coins

I did select to have taxes withheld! You might be onto something...

0 coins

The ny unemployment system has been doing random audits like crazy lately. Got a letter saying they were reviewing 8 month old claims! Sounds like you got caught in one of these. Definitely call and ask for the specific reason for the overpayment determination.

0 coins

Not to scare you but if you dont respond to the overpayment notice they can garnish wages and take tax refunds. Happened to my cousin.

0 coins

That's terrifying. I definitely need to get this sorted ASAP then.

0 coins

They usually send at least 3 notices before taking that step, but yeah don't ignore it

0 coins

are u sure u didn't get a job and forgot to stop certifying? My roommate did that and had to pay back like $3000 😬

0 coins

No I haven't gotten a full time job yet, just did some small freelance work which I reported (or at least tried to correctly

0 coins

Call their fraud department directly instead of the main line. Sometimes gets you through faster and they can see all the notes on your account about why the negative balance happened. The number is on the NYSDOL website somewhere.

0 coins

My partner went thru this last month. The negative amount was because they decided he wasn't looking for work properly even tho he submitted all his job search activities. Total BS but we're appealing it.

0 coins

How's the appeal going? Do you need a lawyer or anything for that?

0 coins

We just had the hearing last week. No lawyer needed but we prepared a TON of evidence - screenshots of job applications, emails, everything. Still waiting for decision.

0 coins

If u cant get thru by phone try reaching out to your state assembly person!!! They have special contacts and can often get answers faster than u can. Worked for me when I had a similar issue.

0 coins

sometimes the system automatically flags accounts for review when you hit certain thresholds (like 26 weeks of benefits or when you switch from one type of claim to another). might just be a routine audit.

0 coins

Have u checked ur mail??? Sometimes they send the explanation letter through regular mail even if u selected electronic communications. Check ur spam folder too.

0 coins

Checking everything now. Nothing in my spam or mail yet.

0 coins

DONT PANIC YET!! I had a negative balance show up and it was literally just a system glitch. Called them (took forever to get through but finally did with claimyr.com) and they fixed it on the spot. Sometimes their system does weird things during updates.

0 coins

fr? that gives me hope it could just be a mistake. The unemployment system always seems to be glitching

0 coins

Yeah for real. The woman I spoke to said their system has been super buggy since they did some update a few weeks ago. Worth checking!

0 coins

I've been dealing with NY unemployment for 18 months and here's what I can tell u: DOCUMENT EVERYTHING. Take screenshots of your payment history before and after the negative amount. Save any emails or messages. Write down names of anyone you speak to. You'll need all this if you have to appeal.

0 coins

just throwing this out there but have u moved recently? sometimes when your address changes they can flag your account for verification and hold payments

0 coins

I did actually move about 3 months ago! But I updated my address in the system right away.

0 coins

Even if you updated it, sometimes it triggers a review. Worth mentioning when you get someone on the phone.
