Got paper check instead of direct deposit for NY unemployment with confusing payment history from 2020-2021 showing random transactions - anyone else's payment method switched?
So frustrating! I selected direct deposit for my unemployment but got a paper check in the mail today (9/15). My payment record shows a release date of 7/25 but I didnt get anything in my bank account. The weird part is that my tax refund from the state went directly to my account no problem! Looking at my payment history is so confusing - there's a bunch of random amounts being added and subtracted: 04-27-2020 $0.00 04-27-2020 $0.00 01-18-2021 -$1,200.00 01-04-2021 $1,200.00 01-18-2021 $0.00 04-12-2021 -$1,339.00 08-30-2021 -$2,185.00 08-30-2021 $0.00 08-20-2021 $2,206.48 08-30-2021 -$21.48 I don't understand why there are entries from April 2020 showing $0.00 twice. Then in January 2021, it shows $1,200.00 added on 01-04-2021, but then that exact amount (-$1,200.00) was removed on 01-18-2021, followed immediately by another $0.00 entry that same day. The April 12th entry shows another deduction of -$1,339.00 with no explanation. Then August gets really weird - on 08-20-2021 they added $2,206.48, but then on 08-30-2021, they deducted -$2,185.00, followed by a $0.00 entry, and then another small deduction of -$21.48 on the same day. Those last two deductions total exactly what they added on 08-20! Not sure what all these transactions mean but at least I finally got paid. Has anyone else had their payment method randomly switched? I'm concerned there might be something wrong with my direct deposit information in their system since they clearly have my bank details for tax refunds.

Same exact thing happened to me! I specifically chose direct deposit and triple checked my bank info. My payment was released on 7/28 but after nothing showed up in my account for 3 weeks I was getting desperate. Then randomly got a paper check yesterday. Glad to have the money but seriously wtf is wrong with their system?

•Did you have any weird transactions in your payment history too? I cant figure out what all these negative amounts mean...

•Yeah mine was a mess too. Had like 3 entries with negative amounts and then positive ones. No explanation whatsoever 🤷♀️

•The negatives are usually adjustments or corrections. Sometimes they calculate wrong and have to fix it. System is ancient and breaks constantly

After 6 weeks of getting NOTHING from ny unemployment I finally broke down and used claimyr.com to get through to a real person. Best decision ever - got a callback with an actual agent within 2 hours who fixed everything on my account. My direct deposit actually worked and money was in my account next day. Sharing a video that helped me understand how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Is this real? Sounds too good to be true tbh

•100% worked for me. I was skeptical too but was desperate after spending literally DAYS on hold getting nowhere. Worth every penny to get my backpay sorted out.

•Seriously another of these miracle solutions? What's the catch with this one? 🙄

•No catch - it just connects you with an agent. You still have to explain your situation yourself. It just handles the horrible hold time part which was driving me insane.

•I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different from the other unemployment scams?

•It's not a scam - they don't claim to get you benefits or anything. They just get an actual person on the phone for you. I still had to provide all my info to the DOL agent myself.

Are we in 1995?? Why are they sending paper checks when direct deposit exists??? My check came 10 DAYS after the release date even though I set up direct deposit from day 1. The system is completely broken.

Hate to be that person but check your payment method again. Sometimes after certifying for multiple weeks the system randomly switches back to paper check. Happened to me twice and I had to go back in and re-select direct deposit. The UI system runs on computers from the stone age I swear.

•I checked and it still shows direct deposit is selected! That's what makes no sense to me...

•Classic NY unemployment 🤦♂️ Nothing ever works the way it should

Looking at those payment history transactions - the negative amounts are when they take money back that they shouldn't have paid you. The positives are payments to you. The $0 ones are usually just system balancing entries. It's confusing as heck but that's how their ancient system works.

•This ☝️ I worked in financial systems and can confirm. Their payment system creates offsetting entries to keep the books balanced. It's not money being taken from you.

•Thanks for explaining! That makes me feel better. I was worried they were taking money back for some reason.

The EXACT same thing happened to my husband! He set up direct deposit but got a paper check last week. Called the automated system and it said his payment method was paper check even though online it still showed direct deposit. The systems don't talk to each other or something 🤬

Someone told me they automatically switch to paper checks if there's any kind of issue with verification. Like if they can't 100% verify your identity or bank account, they default to paper check even if you selected direct deposit. Not sure if it's true but might explain it?

•This is true. My cousin works for DOL and told me the same thing. Any red flag in the system = paper check by default.

•weird that they never tell you this tho. like why not just send an email saying "we couldnt verify ur bank so sending paper check instead" smh

I work with NY unemployment claims (not for DOL) and can tell you this is a known issue in their system. When they have a backlog of payments, sometimes they mass-process them and override payment preferences. They'd rather get money out via check than have more delays with direct deposit verification. Those transaction records look normal - the negative amounts are system adjustments, not money being taken away from you. The dates often don't match actual processing dates. If you need to reach someone directly about payment issues, your best bet is to use claimyr.com - it's the most reliable way to get through to an actual agent who can explain what happened with your specific claim. Just be prepared with your case details when they connect you. And yes, the system is ridiculously outdated. They've been "upgrading" it for years but progress is glacial.

•Thank you so much for the explanation! This makes sense. Do you know if future payments will go back to direct deposit or will I keep getting paper checks?

•It should go back to direct deposit for future payments, but I'd recommend checking your payment method in the system after a week just to be sure. Sometimes these overrides stick around longer than they should.

The same happened to me! Put my direct deposit info in THREE TIMES and still got a paper check! Called and the rep said something about "payment routing issues" and that some batches of payments were automatically switched to paper checks due to "system maintenance" 🙄

•"system maintenance" = our computers are from 1992 and we don't know how to fix them

•EXACTLY 💯 They need to stop making excuses and just fix the damn system

Tip: If you get a paper check but want direct deposit for future payments, log in and RE-ENTER your direct deposit info even if it shows it's already there. Sometimes the system needs a "refresh" to actually use the info that's already in there. It's stupid but it works.

I went thru this last month. Turns out when they do a retroactive payment or backpay, they often default to paper check for "security reasons" even if you have direct deposit set up. Regular weekly payments should still go to your bank account.

Luca Romano
•That would make sense - this payment included some backpay from weeks ago!

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS that never works? so tired of false promises with getting through to unemployment...

•claimyr.com actually works. It's not magic - they just have a system that waits on hold for you then calls you when a real person picks up. Saved me hours of frustration.

•I tried it last week out of desperation and it did work. Got a call back in about 90 mins with an actual person on the line. Was shocked it actually worked tbh

Check the check carefully - my friend got a paper check instead of direct deposit and it turned out to be for a different amount than what showed online. The system had recalculated his benefit but the website wasn't updated yet.

anyone else notice how the payment history makes ZERO sense? My account shows random negative amounts too. One agent told me it's just how their accounting system works - the negatives aren't actually taking money from you, it's just their weird way of tracking adjustments.

Keisha Williams
•I asked about this when I finally got through. The negative entries are internal accounting adjustments. They don't affect your payment - just how they track it in their system.

So I was about to throw my phone after 4 hours on hold with ny unemployment when my buddy told me about claimyr.com. Complete game changer - got a call back with an actual agent on the line within the hour. Explained my direct deposit issue and they fixed it right there. My next payment went straight to my bank account like it was supposed to.

•It literally just gets you past the hold time. They don't promise to fix your claim - just to get you to an actual human who can help. For me it was worth it after wasting DAYS on hold.

•THIS!!! I wasted THREE DAYS trying to get through before using Claimyr. Best decision ever.
