Why does my unemployment payment show an "Offset" of $130.88 with release date 11/30/0002 alongside my regular Direct Deposit?

I checked my payment history and I'm confused. According to my payment summary, I have some weird dates and amounts that don't make sense. Here's what I'm seeing in my payment history: Week Ending Total Amount Net Amount Effective Days Release Date Type 11/20/2022 $130.88 $130.88 O 11/30/0002 Offset 11/20/2022 $251.12 $219.74 4 11/21/2022 Direct Deposit 11/13/2022 $0.00 $0.00 4 11/10/2022 Forfeit 11/06/2022 $0.00 $0.00 4 11/09/2022 Waiting week My latest payment for the week ending 11/20/2022 shows two different amounts. One is a direct deposit for $219.74 with a normal release date of 11/21/2022, but there's another payment showing $130.88 with a weird release date of 11/30/0002 and it's listed as "Offset" type. What does this mean for my payment today? Is the offset amount being taken out of my payment? Why does it have that strange date of 11/30/0002? And why are there two different payment entries for the same week ending 11/20/2022? Will I receive the full amount or just the direct deposit portion? Also, I notice I have a "Forfeit" status for the week ending 11/13/2022. Does this affect anything?

The 0002 date is usually because of an offset. Looks like they're taking some money for something you owe. The rest should hit your account in 1-2 business days after the release date

wat do you mean offset? they never told me I owed anything 😤

Could be old taxes, child support, or overpayment from before. You should get a letter explaining it soon

yeah same thing happened to me last month. turns out i had unpaid taxes from 2021 smh

I found a way to actually talk to someone about this! Used claimyr.com - they call and wait on hold then connect you when someone picks up. Costs $20 but worth it to get answers. Here's a video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

sounds sketchy. does it actually work? 🤔

The waiting week from 11/06 means ur first week isnt paid. Then u got a forfeit week prob cuz u didnt certify right. The offset is taking money from what they owe u - usually means u gotta pay something back

Let me break this down for you completely: 1. The normal payment ($219) will hit your account within 1-2 business days of the release date 2. The $130 with the weird date (11/30/0002) is an offset - meaning they're collecting money you owe 3. The forfeit week usually happens if you made a mistake certifying 4. Waiting week is normal - first week is never paid Best way to get clarity is to speak with an agent. I've had success using claimyr.com to get through - they wait on hold and connect you to an agent. Worth the $20 fee to get answers. Keep all your paperwork and screenshot everything. NY unemployment system is notorious for glitches and weird dates.

Same exact thing happened to me last week! The offset amount ($130.88) is definitely being withheld - mine was for an old overpayment from 2021 that I had no idea about. You should still get your regular direct deposit amount ($219.74) on the normal release date. The year 0002 is just their system being glitchy when there's an offset involved. Check your mail for any letters from DOL explaining what the offset is for. If you don't get anything in a few days, definitely call them (or use that claimyr service others mentioned). The forfeit week shouldn't affect your current payments, but keep an eye on future certifications to make sure you're doing them correctly.

omg thank you so much for this!! 🙏 i was freaking out thinking i wouldn't get paid at all. did you ever find out why they didn't notify you about the 2021 overpayment before taking it? seems weird they can just randomly deduct money without warning

@Zainab Omar they actually did send me letters but I moved twice and never got them 🤦‍♀️ apparently they tried to reach me for months before doing the offset. check if your address is updated in the system! they re'supposed to give you 30 days notice before taking money but if they can t'reach you they ll'just do it anyway

Had the exact same thing happen to me back in September! The offset with the weird 11/30/0002 date is definitely them taking money you owe - could be taxes, child support, or old overpayments. The good news is you'll still get your regular direct deposit of $219.74 on the normal release date (11/21/2022). That date glitch happens whenever there's an offset in their system - it's like their computers can't handle processing both a regular payment and a deduction at the same time lol. The $130.88 is being held/taken, not given to you. You should get a letter in the mail explaining exactly what the offset is for within a week or two. If not, definitely call DOL or try that claimyr service people mentioned. The forfeit week from 11/13 won't affect your current payments but make sure you're certifying correctly going forward. Keep screenshots of everything just in case!

this is super helpful thanks! did you ever figure out what your offset was for? i'm still waiting for any kind of letter or explanation and it's been almost a week since this happened. starting to get worried they took money for something i don't even owe 😅

Just went through this exact same situation! That 11/30/0002 date is their system's way of showing an offset is being processed. The $130.88 is definitely being taken out - NOT added to your payment. You'll still get your regular $219.74 direct deposit on 11/21/2022 though. The offset could be for several things: - Tax debt (federal or state) - Child support arrears - Previous unemployment overpayments - Student loan defaults You should receive a "Notice of Offset" letter within 10 business days explaining exactly what it's for. If you don't get one, call DOL immediately because sometimes they send notices to old addresses. Pro tip: Log into your online account and check if there are any "Determinations" or "Notices" in your inbox that you might have missed. Sometimes they post explanations there before mailing physical letters. The forfeit week from 11/13 won't affect your current payments, but double-check you're answering all certification questions correctly to avoid future issues. Keep screenshots of everything - NY's system is notorious for glitches and you'll want documentation if there are disputes later!

This is exactly what I needed to hear! Thank you so much @Isabella Tucker for the detailed breakdown. I m'definitely going to check my online account for any determinations I might have missed. The fact that I ll'still get my regular $219.74 is such a relief - I was panicking thinking they were taking ALL my money! 😰 Really appreciate everyone s'help here, this community is a lifesaver when dealing with NY s'confusing system

I've been dealing with NY unemployment for over a year now and can tell you that the 11/30/0002 date is a classic system glitch that happens with offsets. It's their ancient computer system's way of saying "we're taking money but can't figure out how to display the date properly" 🤦‍♀️ The $130.88 offset is definitely being deducted from what they owe you - it's not a payment TO you. Your regular direct deposit of $219.74 should still hit your account on 11/21/2022 as scheduled. Here's what you need to do: 1. Check your online account under "Correspondence" for any notices 2. Call your bank to make sure your address is current (offsets often happen when notices go to old addresses) 3. Keep calling DOL or use that claimyr service to get through - you NEED to know what this offset is for The most common reasons for offsets are: - Old tax debt - Child support - Previous UI overpayments from years ago - Defaulted student loans Don't panic about the forfeit week - that's separate and won't affect current payments. But definitely figure out what that offset is ASAP because if it's an error, getting it fixed takes forever with their system. Document everything and keep screenshots!

This is super helpful @Esteban Tate! I'm new to all this unemployment stuff and was completely lost when I saw that weird 0002 date. Your breakdown makes so much sense - it's basically their system having a meltdown while trying to process two things at once 😅 I'm definitely going to check that correspondence section right now, I didn't even know that existed! Really appreciate you taking the time to explain everything step by step
