2020 Tax Transcript Shows $3,200 Refund Cancelled and Reissued Next Day - What Happened to My NY Unemployment Return?
I got my tax transcript from 2020 and I noticed something weird. My refund of $3,200 was issued on April 27, 2020, but then it shows as cancelled the same day. Then it was reissued the next day on April 28. There was also a notice issued on April 27 but I don't remember getting anything. I never had any problems getting my refund - it was deposited into my account about a week after I filed. So why does it show as cancelled and reissued? When I look at my transcript, here's what I'm seeing: ADJUSTESTATUS INCOME GROSS SE PER RETURN: TAX TAXABLE INCOME, Head 03 of FROM Household THE RETURN OR As ADJUSTED ** 8,392.00 SE TAXPAYER TAXABLE INCOME 0.00 0.00 SPOUSE TAXABLE INCOME 0.00 TOTAL SELF EMPLOYMENT TAX: 0.00 RETURN DUE 0.00 PROCESSING DATE DATE OR RETURN RECEIVED DATE (WHICHEVER IS LATER) CODE 150 EXPLANATION OF TRANSACTION TRANSACTIONS Apr. 15, 2021 Tax return filed Apr. 19, 2021 16221-449-50000-1 CYCLE DATE 806 20211305 04-19-2021 AMOUNT W-2 or 1099 withholding $0.00 766 Tax relier cradis 66 Credit to your account 04-15-2021 -$1,772.00 46 Refund issued 04-27-2020 41,246.00 0 Additional tax assessed 04-15-2020 41,000.00 16254-999-05099-0 20201505 04-27-2020 42,200.00 $0.00 1 Refund cancelled 04-27-2020 5 Refund issued -02,200.00 04-28-2020 Notice issued $3,200.00 04-27-2020 $0.00 The transcript shows 'additional tax assessed' of $2,000 on April 15, 2020, then a 'credit to account' of $2,246 on April 15, 2021. I also see that my filing status was Head of Household with a gross income of $8,392.00, but my taxable income shows as $0.00. There's a cycle date of 20201505 on April 27, 2020, and another cycle date of 20211305 on April 19, 2021. I'm confused about what all this means, especially the cancelled and reissued refund on consecutive days. Has anyone else seen this kind of thing on their transcript? Could this cause problems with my NY unemployment? I'm also curious about the "Tax relier cradis" line and what that might be referring to.

This happened to me too but with a 1,800 refund. From what I understand, sometimes they cancel and reissue if there was a mistake in the processing or if they changed something about your return. The additional tax might be from unreported unemployment income if you didnt include that on your original filing. NY unemployment withholds too little and people get surprised with taxes later.

•Thanks for the info. I don't think I had any unreported unemployment though since I wasn't on unemployment in 2019. I worked all of 2019 and only started unemployment in May 2020 after Covid hit.

•In my case they canceled the refund cuz they sent it to the wrong bank first. Then they fixed it and sent it to the right account. Maybe check if ur bank info changed?

•Hmm I've had the same bank account for years, so I don't think that's it. But maybe they had the wrong number initially? 🤔

I was going nuts trying to reach NY unemployment about a similar tax issue. Spent 3 weeks calling constantly and couldn't get through. Finally tried this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me a callback from a real agent within a couple hours. Talking to the agent got my tax transcript issues cleared up fast. Best money I've spent to get my refund situation straightened out. They even have a video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Does this actually work? I've been trying to get through for like 2 weeks about my tax adjustment.

•Yeah it worked for me. They just connect you with an actual agent so you can explain your situation directly. I was super skeptical at first but was desperate after weeks of trying.

•sounds fishy tbh. how does some rAnDoM website get through when nobody else can? 👀

•They use some auto-dialer technology that keeps calling until it gets through. When an agent answers, they connect the call to your phone. Not magic, just automation.

•I actually tried this after seeing it mentioned here last week. Got a callback in about 90 mins and the agent fixed my issue. After two months of trying to get through myself, it was worth every penny.

So the code 846 means refund issued, and 841 means refund cancelled. It's common for the IRS to cancel and reissue refunds if there's an adjustment or routing error. Nothing to worry about if you got your money. The $1,000 additional tax could be related to the unemployment tax adjustment they did in 2021 retroactively. A lot of people got automatic adjustments.

•Ohh that makes more sense. So the $1,246 credit in 2021 could be related to that tax adjustment for unemployment benefits?

Lim Wong
•Exactly. The American Rescue Plan made the first $10,200 of unemployment non-taxable retroactively for 2020. If you paid tax on that amount, they automatically adjusted and sent refunds in 2021. The timing matches up.

OMG the ny unemployment tax mess is still haunting us all! I had something similar on my transcript - refund canceled and reissued but with a different amount. Called the IRS and they said it was because of a math error they caught. It doesn't affect your unemployment benifits tho, just how they processed your tax refund.

The notice you missed was probably a CP12. They send these when they make adjustments to your return. I got one for the same reason - they adjusted my unemployment tax and had to cancel/reissue the refund. You can request a copy of the notice by calling the IRS or looking in your online account if you have one set up.

•Thanks, I'll check my IRS online account. Didn't know I could see notices there.

Something VERY similar happened to me and it turned out to be identity verification. Even though I got my refund, a year later they sent me a letter saying I needed to verify my identity for that old return. Apparently they sometimes release the funds but flag the account for review. The additional assessment might be related to that. I'd call the IRS directly about this one.

•Seconding this. Call IRS directly - NY unemployment cant help with federal tax transcript issues. You need to talk to IRS.

•True that! I finally got through using claimyr.com for my unemployment issue and then tackled the IRS separately. At least with the IRS you can schedule callbacks now.

It says "additional tax assessed $1,000" which usually means they found income you didn't report or you made a math error. Then later it shows credits being applied, which could be from unemployment tax adjustments that happened in 2021. The refund cancellation and reissue is usually just internal processing - nothign to worry about if the money hit ur account.

Look at line 766 "Tax relief credits" - that's the American Rescue Plan unemployment tax break they applied automatically in 2021. They gave people who received unemployment in 2020 a tax break retroactively. That might explain the adjustments you're seeing. Did you get an additional refund in 2021 around April/May?

Oliver Brown
•Actually yes! I did get a random deposit from the IRS around May 2021. I wasn't sure why but this makes sense now.

•Mystery solved then! That was your unemployment tax adjustment. They excluded the first $10,200 of unemployment from taxes retroactively for 2020. The cancellation/reissue from 2020 is probably unrelated - just normal processing.

This looks totally normal to me. A lot of times refunds are cancelled and reissued if they need to make adjustments or if they initially send it to the wrong place. Since you got your money, I wouldn't stress about it. The 2021 adjustments are likely from the unemployment tax forgiveness they did retroactively. Nothing to do with your current ny unemployment status.

Listen I've been dealing with NY unemployment and IRS issues for TWO YEARS now, and here's what you need to know: 1. The refund cancel/reissue happens for multiple reasons - wrong account number, adjustment to the amount, or additional verification needed. Since you received your money, this is a non-issue. 2. The "additional tax assessed" in 2020 could be from a calculation error or unreported income they found. 3. The credit in 2021 is almost certainly from the American Rescue Plan unemployment tax exemption ($10,200 of unemployment benefits were made tax-free retroactively). 4. None of this will affect your current unemployment benefits with NY. If you're worried, you can request your wage and income transcript from the IRS to see exactly what income was reported for you. Two resources that helped me: - r/tax subreddit has great info on transcript codes - When I needed to reach NY unemployment, claimyr.com got me through to a live agent in about 2 hours after weeks of failed attempts Hope this helps!

Def check if you got a letter (CP12 probably) explaining the adjustments. My sister had similar transcript codes and ignored the notice, then got a surprise bill 2 years later cuz she missed the deadline to respond. NY unemployment is a mess but this looks more like standard IRS stuff.

•Set up withholding correctly and use a tax professional! You shouldn't be getting huge refunds OR owing a lot. That means ur doing it wrong all year!

The notice code on April 27, 2020 is what you need to follow up on. Call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 and ask about that specific notice. They can tell you exactly what it was for and resend it if needed.
