Missing $550.79 NY unemployment tax refund from July 2021 - help understanding my IRS transcript
Filed my 2020 taxes early last year and got my regular refund in March. When I look at my transcript, I can see that the "Refund issued" of $3,052.00 was processed on 03-18-2021. Then after losing my job and collecting NY unemployment, I had to file an amended return in June because of the unemployment tax break. Got a letter from the IRS around September saying I should be getting an additional refund, but nothing has shown up in my bank account. Looking at my account transcript now and I'm totally confused. Here's what I'm seeing: 290 Additional tax assessed 20201705 05-12-2020 $0.00 766 Credit to your account 04-16-2021 -$2,900.00 846 Refund issued 03-18-2021 $4,052.00 291 Reduced or removed prior tax 07-27-2021 -$547.00 assessed 971 Notice issued 07-27-2021 $0.00 846 Refund issued 07-15-2021 $550.79 776 Interest credited to your account 07-27-2021 -$3.79 This Product Contains Sensitive Taxpayer Data I see a "refund issued" of $550.79 from July 15th and "reduced or removed prior tax assessed" of $547.00 from July 27th, plus some interest of $3.79. Does this mean they already sent the refund? I never received anything in my account. Was the $550.79 supposed to be my unemployment tax break refund? That seems really low compared to what I was expecting. First time dealing with amended returns and unemployment taxes so any help understanding this transcript would be great. Should I be contacting the IRS about the missing refund at this point?

Looks like they already sent it out back in July. That $550.79 line is your refund from the amended return (the $547 tax reduction plus $3.79 interest). The IRS probably mailed you a check instead of direct deposit. Check with USPS or see if you can request a payment trace from the IRS. Good luck!

•OMG thank you! That makes sense...I moved apartments last summer so maybe the check went to my old address. Didnt think they would mail it when my regular refund was direct deposit!

•Do you know how I can track down the check or get it reissued? It's been like 9 months now

•You need to call IRS and ask for a payment trace. Be ready to wait on hold for HOURS tho...

After months of trying to reach someone at the IRS about my missing refund, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to a live agent. They basically wait on hold for you then call you when someone picks up. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast! Here's a vid explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Does this actually work? Ive been trying to call the IRS for 3 weeks and just get disconnected or stuck on hold forever

•Yeah it worked for me! I was skeptical too but I was desperate after 5 failed attempts to reach someone. They called me when an agent was on the line and I got my issues sorted in 10 minutes.

•sounds like one of those ads that pops up everywhere. anyone ACTUALLY try this besides just the person posting about it?

•Not an ad lol. I used it after someone on another thread recommended it. Beats sitting on hold for 3 hours just to get disconnected.

•wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? i've wasted so much time trying different 'hacks' to reach the IRS

•It worked for me! You can check their reviews online if you're worried. I was just happy to finally talk to someone who could help.

When the IRS sends amended return refunds, they almost always mail paper checks even if your original refund was direct deposit. I'd bet that check either went to your old address or got lost in the mail. You need to call them and request a payment trace.

The ny unemployment tax break was such a mess last year. I think EVERYONE had issues with it. My refund went to pay off some old student loans I didn't even know I still had!! Make sure to check if they offset your refund for any past debts.

•Omg this happened to me too! My amended refund went straight to a defaulted student loan. Didn't even get a notice until weeks later 😡

•Hmm I don't have any student loans or debts that I know of... but maybe I should check if there's something I don't know about?

•def check the Treasury Offset Program online. they take refunds for all kinds of random stuff - even old parking tickets sometimes!

The 846 code with $550.79 means they sent your refund on 7/14/21. BUT this doesn't mean you actually received it. I had the same issue - my check was apparently 'delivered' but I never got it. Call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 but be prepared to wait FOREVER. I finally got through using claimyr.com after trying for weeks on my own.

•Thanks for the insight! And good to hear another recommendation for that service. What did you have to do once you reached someone? Did they reissue the check?

•Yeah they did a payment trace, found it was never cashed, and reissued a new check. Took about 6 weeks for the new check but at least I got it!

Same exact thing happened to me! Filed my taxes in Feb 2020, got my original refund, then had the unemployment tax break thing. IRS sent me a letter saying I'd get money but nothing came. When I FINALLY got thru to someone, they said they mailed a check that was returned as undeliverable. Check your address on file with the IRS!! Might not match what you think.

•How did you finally get through to someone?

•I had to call literally 37 times over 3 days. Keep hitting 0 when the menu starts and sometimes you'll get in the queue. But be prepared to wait 2+ hours on hold. There are services that will do the waiting for you like claimyr.com which some ppl here mentioned.

🔥🔥🔥 FOR ANYONE DEALING WITH TAX TRANSCRIPT ISSUES: 🔥🔥🔥 Let me break this down for you as someone who worked for the IRS for 7 years: 1) The code 846 with $550.79 means they issued a refund on 07-14-2021. The $547 is the tax they removed based on your amended return, and the $3.79 is interest they paid you for the delay. 2) Amended return refunds are ALWAYS issued as paper checks, even if your original refund was direct deposit. This is IRS policy and catches many people off guard. 3) If you moved and didn't file a change of address with USPS or the IRS, your check likely went to your old address. After a certain period, it would be returned to the IRS as undeliverable. 4) At this point (9+ months later), you need to call the IRS and request a payment trace. They can verify if the check was cashed or returned and issue a replacement. 5) Getting through to the IRS is notoriously difficult. The best times to call are early morning (7am EST) or late afternoon (5-7pm EST). Alternatively, use a service like claimyr.com which will wait on hold for you and connect you when an agent picks up. 6) Once you get through, explain that you never received your amended return refund despite the transcript showing it was issued. They'll start a payment trace and either reissue the check or investigate further. Good luck! The unemployment tax break situation from 2020 was a nightmare for millions of people, so you're definitely not alone in this struggle.

•OMG thank you so much for this detailed explanation! This is exactly what I needed. I definitely moved apartments around that time and probably didn't update my address properly with the IRS.

•Happy to help! This happens all the time, especially with amended returns. Once you get the payment trace done, the reissued check usually comes within 6-8 weeks.

In the same boat. Got the letter from IRS, never got the money. Transcript shows they issued it. Had to do a payment trace. Apparently the check was mail but never cashed. Been waiting for reissue for 4 months now! 🤦♂️

•Oh no! 4 months for reissue? That's insane... did they give you any timeline?

•They said 6-8 weeks but it's been WAY longer. every time I call they just say 'its processing' whatever that means 🙄

The IRS is such a joke with this stuff. They have all our bank info for direct deposit but still send paper checks for amended returns IN 2021! AND they don't automatically update your address with USPS change of address forms. So frustrating. I've been dealing with ny unemployment AND irs nonsense all year.

went through this exact thing. Call the IRS, do a payment trace, and you'll probably find out they mailed the check to an old address. they can reissue it once they confirm the original was never cashed. but the hold times are brutal so I'd recommend using a service like claimyr to get thru to someone.

have u checked unclaimed funds? sometimes if checks arent cashed they end up in the state unclaimed property office. worth a look since its been so long

•I didn't even think of that, thanks for the suggestion! I'll check the NY unclaimed funds website.

For what its worth, I had EXACTLY the same issue with my NY unemployment tax refund. Check was mailed to wrong address even tho I had direct deposit set up. Took 3 months and 20+ calls to finally get it sorted. The IRS is completely overwhelmed still.

•Had to do a payment trace through an IRS agent, prove I never received or cashed the check, then wait for them to reissue. Total nightmare but eventually got the money.

I've dealt with this disaster too 😤 Not sure if anyone mentioned, but you can also contact your local Taxpayer Advocate Service office for help if you're having financial hardship due to not receiving your refund. They can sometimes move things along faster than regular IRS channels.

•the taxpayer advocate service is also backlogged by like 6 months rn... but worth a try I guess

•True but if you can demonstrate actual hardship (like facing eviction, utilities being shut off) they will prioritize. Just have to be persistent and document everything.
