NY unemployment tax transcript confusion - $2,472 refund showing Aug 18 but $2,448 being taken back Aug 30?

I just checked my tax transcript and I'm super confused about what's going on with my NY unemployment taxes. According to what I'm seeing, I'm supposed to get a refund of $2,472.06 on August 18th, but then on August 30th they're taking $2,448.00 back from me?? Can someone make sense of this for me? My transcript shows my adjusted gross income was $68,654.00 with taxable income of $43,854.00. It shows my original tax return was filed in April 12, 2021, and I had about $7,672.00 in withholding. My tax per return is $3,318.00. There's an entry for 'Additional tax assessed' from April 27, 2020 that shows $0.00, and another one from January 18, 2021 that also shows $0.00. I already received a refund of $4,354.00 back on March 25, 2021. But what's confusing me is these new entries: - August 18, 2021: Refund issued $2,472.06 - August 30, 2021: Interest credited to your account -$24.06 - August 30, 2021: Reduced or removed prior tax assessed -$2,448.00 - August 30, 2021: Notice issued $0.00 The transcript has all these codes like "150 Tax return filed" with cycle numbers like "20211201" and "16211-476-17932-1" for the withholding. My return due date was April 15, 2021 but they received it on April 12, 2021. The processing date was also April 12, 2021. I don't have any self-employment income - it shows SE Taxable Income Taxpayer: $0.00, SE Taxable Income Spouse: $0.00, and Total Self Employment Tax: $0.00. I don't understand if I'm getting money or if they're taking money away? Please only answer if you actually know how to read these transcripts, not just guessing!

This is related to the unemployment tax adjustment. When the American Rescue Plan passed, it made some unemployment benefits not taxable, so the IRS is automatically adjusting returns. The $2517 is your refund from that adjustment. The entry for Sept 12 isn't them taking money - it's showing they reduced your prior tax assessment by $2390 (which is why you're getting the refund). You're good - the money is coming to you, not going to them.

Oh thank you! That makes so much more sense. I was panicking thinking they were going to take back money after giving it to me.

This is exacty right. I got the same thing on my transcript last month. Money came and nothing was taken back.

but what does the 'notice issued' part mean? should OP expect some kind of letter explaining this?

Yeah they'll send a letter explaining the adjustment. It usually arrives a week or two after the refund hits your account.

I was going through the same exact nightmare trying to reach someone at ny unemployment about tax questions. Finally tried this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual human at unemployment in under 30 minutes. Talking to that agent cleared everything up for me and I got my benefits sorted out immediately. This was after weeks of getting nowhere on my own. Best decision I made - here's a video of how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Is this for real? I've been trying to get through to unemployment for 3 weeks straight. Every morning, every afternoon. Just constant busy signals or disconnects.

100% for real. I wasted like 40+ hours trying to call them myself before I found this. They handle the calling and waiting on hold, then connect you when a real person answers. Getting to talk to an actual agent changed everything for me.

sounds too good to be true... another 'miracle solution' that probably doesn't work 🙄

I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying for weeks. It actually works - they use some kind of automated system to keep redialing and stay on hold so you don't have to. When they get through to a real person, they call you.

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? the unemployment phone system is literally the 9th circle of hell

I used it last month when my claim got randomly frozen. Not gonna lie, talking to a real person got my account fixed in 10 minutes after weeks of frustration. Worth every penny considering I was about to lose my apartment.

those negative numbers dont mean theyre takin money away from u! its an accounting thing. the negative 2390 is them REDUCING wat u owe, not taking more money from u. ur gettin that refund for sure 👍

It's part of the unemployment tax break that passed. if you paid taxes on unemployment last year, they're giving some of it back. The negative number is actually GOOD - it means they're lowering how much tax you had to pay. The refund is real, nothing's being taken away! Just make sure your bank info is up to date.

Thanks for explaining! I don't think I've changed my bank info since I filed, so it should be good. Just was freaking out looking at all these numbers.

I got my unemployment tax refund about 3 weeks ago. It just showed up in my account with no warning. The numbers on my transcript looked similar to yours.

For anyone dealing with tax or unemployment issues in NY, here's what I've learned the hard way after 9 months of problems: 1. The transcript is confusing but a negative number after "Reduced or removed prior tax" is GOOD - it means they're lowering your tax amount 2. If you need to actually talk to someone about your case, regular phone calls are useless. You'll waste days of your life on hold. I finally used claimyr.com after a friend recommended it - they kept redialing and waiting on hold, then connected me to an agent when they got through. Literally saved my sanity. 3. ALWAYS keep records of everything - screenshots, confirmations, names of agents you talk to 4. The "Notice issued" on your transcript means they're sending a letter explaining the adjustment 5. If your address has changed since you filed, update it NOW through the IRS website Hope this helps someone! The system is broken but there are ways through it.

It's not a hack - it's just a service that calls for you and stays on hold so you don't have to. When they get a human, they connect you. I was skeptical too until I was desperate enough to try anything.

Just adding that I tried your suggestion about claimyr and got through to unemployment today after 3 weeks of trying on my own. The agent fixed my issue in 10 minutes. THANK YOU

I work in tax prep (not a CPA tho so this isnt official advice). That transcript shows u getting a refund not them taking money. The -$2390 is an adjustment REDUCING your tax liability. Thats why ur getting a refund. Its confusing cause IRS language is weird af 🙃

The IRS is sending out automatic refunds to people who paid taxes on unemployment before the law changed midway through filing season. I got mine last month. Almost everyone who received unemployment and filed taxes early is getting some money back.

-

Ava Martinez

Thanks! That sounds like what's happening. How long did it take for the money to actually hit your account after it showed up on your transcript?

Like 3 business days for direct deposit. If they're mailing a check it can take 2-3 weeks tho.

I cant even see my transcript online because the verification system never works for me. I'm still waiting for them to mail it after requesting it 3 weeks ago 😤

Try calling early in the morning like 7:01am exactly when they open. Thats how I got through. Or use claimyr.com - thats how I finally got someone on the phone after weeks of trying.

THIS IS NOT THEM TAKING MONEY! Repeat: THIS IS A REFUND! The -2390 is them reducing how much you owe, not taking more money from you. You're getting a $2517 refund. The way they word stuff is stupid confusing, I know - I went through this exact thing last month.

What's happening is that when the American Rescue Plan passed, they made the first $10,200 of unemployment benefits tax free for 2020, but a lot of people had already filed their taxes and paid tax on all their unemployment. The IRS is now going through and fixing everyone's returns automatically and sending refunds if you overpaid. That's what's showing on your transcript.

NY unemployment system is such a mess. I've been dealing with them for months about a different issue and can't get anyone on the phone. The website is useless too. Any tips for actually getting through to a human???

Call at exactly 7:58am before they officially open. Sometimes you can get in the queue before everyone else starts calling.

I used claimyr.com after seeing it mentioned on this sub. It costs money but they got me connected to an agent when I couldn't get through for weeks. Talking to a real person was the only way my issue got fixed.

It took me 7 months to get my 2020 tax refund thanks to this adjusted unemployment mess. But it WILL come eventually. And yes, the transcript is confusing af - tax people need to learn how to write in plain english!!!

The adjustment is becuz they made unemployment partially untaxed retroactively. So if u filed early (b4 the law changed), ur gettin a refund of tax u already paid. I got mine 2 weeks after it appeared on my transcript. No it's not a scam and no they aint takin ur money back lol.

Any idea if they're doing the same thing for 2021 unemployment or just 2020?

Just 2020 as far as I know. The tax break was specific to that year because of covid.

You see that line that says "refund issued" with a date in the future? That means you're GETTING money, not paying it. The system is confusing but this is actually good news.

NY unemployment and tax stuff is literally the worst system I've ever dealt with in my life. And I once had to get a driver's license in Russia. 😂

I had the same thing on my transcript. I called the IRS (took 2 hours on hold) and they confirmed it's from the unemployment tax exclusion. The way they phrase it is super confusing but you're GETTING a refund, not having money taken. I already received mine about 10 days after it appeared on my transcript.

I had to get a tax proffesional to help me with my unemployment tax issues becase no one at ny unemployment would pick up the phone. It was a nightmare trying to reach anyone. Finally used claimyr.com on the recommendation of someone in this sub and actually got through to a human! They stayed on hold for me and only connected me when a real person answered. Finally got everything straightened out.

Not at all - they just call the unemployment line and wait on hold, then connect you when someone answers. You handle the entire conversation with the agent yourself. Its basically just a service that waits on hold so you don't have to.

They got through in about 45 minutes for me. But I've heard it varies depending on the time of day and how busy it is. Still way faster than me spending days trying to call myself.

everyone saying these are automatic adjustments is right but MAKE SURE THE IRS HAS YOUR CORRECT BANK INFO. My sister's refund got sent to a closed account and it took her MONTHS to straighten it out. Check your account info on the IRS website if you can access it.

This whole unemployment tax nightmare been a mess since day 1. first they tax all of it, then they untax some of it, then they take forever to process the refunds, and then they send out confusing transcripts that make ppl think theyre in trouble when really theyre gettin money back. its like they WANT us to be confused 🤦‍♂️
