Tax transcript shows multiple refunds in Jan/Feb but unsure if NY unemployment tax refund is included - can anyone help decode the July $0.00 assessment?
I've been waiting for the unemployment tax refund and finally requested my tax transcript by mail since I was locked out of my online account. Just got it today and I'm totally confused by what I'm seeing. There's a bunch of dates and codes that I don't understand: 846 Refund issued 01-04-2021 $2,300.00 290 Additional tax assessed 20205302 01-18-2021 $0.00 766 Credit to your account 04-15-2021 -$1,091.00 766 Credit to your account 04-15-2021 -$1,200.00 768 Earned income credit 04-15-2021 -$4,650.00 846 Refund issued 02-22-2021 $8,458.00 290 Additional tax assessed 20212705 07-26-2021 $0.00 This shows refunds from February and January, some credits in April, and then something about "additional tax assessed" from July with $0.00 listed. Does this mean my unemployment tax refund hasn't been processed yet? Or maybe it was processed before this transcript was printed? I have 3 kids as dependents which should affect the amount - I see there's an Earned Income Credit line showing -$4,650.00 from April 15th, is that related to my dependents? I also see two different "Credit to your account" entries on the same day (April 15th) for -$1,091.00 and -$1,200.00. Could one of these be the unemployment tax refund? I'm especially confused about the "Additional tax assessed" entries from January 18th and July 26th that both show $0.00. What does that mean? And what are those number sequences next to some of the entries (like 17254-588-05043-1)? I've tried calling the tax office like 20 times but can't get through to an actual person who can explain this to me. Has anyone else figured out how to read these transcripts or know when the unemployment tax refunds are actually happening? I feel like the information is right in front of me but I just don't know how to interpret it.

I went through the EXACT same thing last month. The tax transcript is confusing af 🤔 That July date with $0.00 is actually important - it means they've processed your account but havent issued the unemployment refund yet. Mine showed up about 3 weeks after I saw that entry.

•Oh wow really? That gives me some hope then! Did you get a separate deposit or letter when it finally came through?

Brianna Schmidt
•Yep! Came as a separate direct deposit with some random description like "TAX REF" and then a bunch of numbers. No letter beforehand tho.

I managed to finally talk to someone about this after using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). They got me connected to a live agent who actually explained my transcript! Totally worth it instead of calling 50 times and getting nowhere. The agent told me that the "Additional tax assessed" with $0.00 means they reviewed your account and are processing the refund. With dependents, you should be getting yours soon! https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Is this for real? Seems too good to be true... how does it work?

•Totally real. You just go to their site, pay for the callback, and they call the agency for you and stay on hold. When an agent picks up, they connect you. Talking to a real human solved my issue in 10 minutes after weeks of stress.

•Another app promising miracles? Does it actually work or just take your money?

•It's not a miracle, just a practical solution. They don't fix your problem - they just get you past the impossible hold times so you can talk to someone who can. Best money I spent to get my refund questions answered.

•wait so do they call IRS or ny unemployment? this post is confusing me

•They call whatever number you select on their site. For this situation, I had them call the tax dept number I couldn't get through on. They have options for ny unemployment too.

The transcripts are impossible to understand without a decoder ring 🙄 I had to watch 3 YouTube videos to figure mine out. That 290 code with $0.00 from July means they've adjusted your account but haven't issued the refund yet. Keep checking your bank account for random deposits.

from what i understand, if you have dependents theres a whole different schedule for when they process the unemployment tax refunds. people with complicated returns (with kids/dependents) are in the last batch. my sister has 2 kids and just got hers last week.

•Do you know what kind of timeline she experienced? I've been waiting for what feels like forever!

•she said it took about 2 months from when she saw that 290 code with the $0 amount. but she also had other tax credits beyond just the unemployment thing so yours might be faster

LPT: Don't wait on them to call you. The ny unemployment system is overwhelmed and understaffed. My brother-in-law worked there briefly and said they're months behind. Take matters into your own hands - get through to a human somehow (I used Claimyr.com and actually got through) or try calling right when they open.

•Is morning really better? I always thought end of day would have shorter wait times.

•In my experience first thing in the morning is MUCH better. By afternoon they're already backed up with calls.

Here's what each code on your transcript actually means: - 846 Refund Issued: Money sent to you - 766 Credit to Account: Money applied to your tax bill - 290 Additional Tax Assessed: They reviewed your account (the $0.00 means no additional tax was added) - 768: Earned Income Credit Based on what you posted, it looks like they've adjusted your account in July (that 290 code) but haven't issued the unemployment tax refund yet (would show as another 846). With dependents, you're in one of the later batches - they're doing simple returns first, then moving to more complex ones. The most reliable way to get answers is to actually speak with an agent. After trying for weeks, I finally used claimyr.com to get through. They kept calling while I went about my day, then connected me when a human picked up. The agent explained everything and gave me a timeline for my refund. Don't waste days trying to call yourself - that's precisely why services like this exist. Getting a human on the phone is literally the only way to get concrete answers about your specific situation.

•Thank you!!! This is so helpful. The codes were driving me crazy. I'll check out that service too since it seems impossible to get through otherwise.

Anyone know if these unemployment tax refunds are also happening for state taxes or just federal? I'm confused about how NY unemployment taxes work with all this

Connor Richards
•Its both! NY follows the federal guidelines on this so youll get both refunds. the state one usually comes after the federal one.

why is everything with ny unemployment or taxes so complicated? feels like they purposely make it impossible to understand what's happening with OUR money 🤬

•PREACH. I think they hope we'll just give up and not get what we're owed

•its not just ny tho, the whole unemployment system nationwide is a dumpster fire

•true but NY seems especially bad at communication. like would it kill them to send a clear email explaining things?

FYI for anyone else stuck in this situaton - I just checked the nysdol website and they updated it yesterday saying they're still processing unemployment tax refunds and some won't be issued until September, especially for people with dependents or other tax credits.

This whole process is a joke. i've been waiting 4 MONTHS for my unemployment tax refund. called 40+ times. finally broke down and used claimyr.com to get past the hold times. agent told me they had the wrong address on file which was causing the delay. fixed in 10 min once i actually talked to someone. sometimes you just need a human!!

Honestly the transcript codes might as well be written in ancient hieroglyphics 😂 No one understands them except tax professionals and even THEY disagree on interpretations sometimes.

Quick question - did anybody get partial refunds? I got what seems like half of what I expected based on what I paid in unemployment taxes. Wondering if they're doing it in batches or something?

Ryan Vasquez
•YES! Same thing happened to me. First payment was about 60% of what I expected, then 3 weeks later I got the rest. No explanation, just two separate deposits.

•Mine came all at once but my cousin got hers in 2 parts. No rhyme or reason to it apparently 🤷♂️

I see ppl talking about those claimyr people. I was skeptical but I used them last week and they actually got me through to unemployment after I tried for DAYS on my own. The hold music was giving me nightmares 🤣 Just sharing cuz I was in your shoes not long ago.

look at the dates carefully. you got a refund in february of $7,458. that's probably your regular tax refund. the july entry means they're still processing your unemployment tax adjustment. two different things.

•That makes sense! I was getting confused between the regular refund and the unemployment tax adjustment. Thanks for clearing that up.
