Help Understanding 2022 IRS Transcript: Unexplained $29,350 Credit Balance, Refund Freeze Since Dec 2022, and Duplicate Return Issue from Aug 2022
I can't figure out whats going on with my refund and the transcript is so confusing. Filed back in February and still nothing. The codes make no sense to me and I keep seeing different dates pop up. Anyone know how to actually read these things? Looking at my account transcript: ANY MINUS SIGN SHOWN BELOW SIGNIFIES A CREDIT AMOUNT ACCOUNT BALANCE: -$36,344.00 ACCRUED INTEREST: 0.00 AS OF: Oct. 29, 2024 ACCRUED PENALTY: 0.00 AS OF: Oct. 29, 2024 ACCOUNT BALANCE PLUS ACCRUALS (this is not a payoff amount): -$36,344.00 INFORMATION FROM THE RETURN OR AS ADJUSTED EXEMPTIONS: 01 FILING STATUS: Single ADJUSTED GROSS INCOME: $9,118.00 TAXABLE INCOME: 0.00 TAX PER RETURN: 0.00 SE TAXABLE INCOME TAXPAYER: $9,061.00 SE TAXABLE INCOME SPOUSE: 0.00 TOTAL SELF EMPLOYMENT TAX: $1,471.00 RETURN DUE DATE OR RETURN RECEIVED DATE (WHICHEVER IS LATER) Apr. 15, 2022 PROCESSING DATE Feb. 21, 2023 TRANSACTIONS CODE EXPLANATION OF TRANSACTION CYCLE DATE AMOUNT 150 Tax return filed 20230505 02-21-2023 $0.00 70221-478-46950-2 766 Tax relief credit 03-30-2021 -$1,500.00 846 Refund issued 03-18-2021 $1,500.00 290 Additional tax assessed 20211005 03-30-2021 $0.00 70254-999-05011-1 971 Notice issued 04-02-2021 $0.00 810 Refund freeze 12-02-2022 $0.00 971 Notice issued 02-21-2023 $0.00 976 Duplicate return filed 08-25-2022 $0.00 09221-295-06021-2 766 Credit to your account 04-16-2022 -$16,670.00 766 Credit to your account 04-16-2022 -$14,670.00 I'm especially confused about the "Refund freeze" code 810 from December 2022, and why there are two different credits to my account on the same day in April 2022. Also, what does code 976 for "Duplicate return filed" mean? Did someone file under my name? I see my balance is -$36,344.00 but nothing has been issued to me since that $1,500 back in March 2021. Is this normal? Why would my account show "processing date" of February 2023 when I filed in February THIS year? And why would it show a "duplicate return" from last August? The self-employment tax amount is showing $1,471 but my AGI is only $9,118. I'm completely lost on how to interpret all these codes and dates. What does it mean that my return due date or return received date is April 15, 2022? That was from two years ago! And the processing date says Feb. 21, 2023, which was over a year ago. How can my processing date be from 2023 when I filed in 2024? The transcript shows I got a tax relief credit of $1,500 on 03-30-2021 and a refund was issued of $1,500 on 03-18-2021. But then there's an "Additional tax assessed" line with $0.00 amount from 03-30-2021. Then I see this "Notice issued" on 04-02-2021 but I don't know what notice that was. And the "Refund freeze" from 12-02-2022 is really concerning. Does that mean my refund has been frozen for almost 2 years? The most confusing part is those two credits on 04-16-2022: one for -$16,670.00 and another for -$14,670.00 on the same day. That's over $31,000 in credits! But I never received this money. Where did it go? Why are there two separate credits? And what's with that code 976 "Duplicate return filed" from 08-25-2022? I didn't file twice. Is someone using my information? Should I be worried about identity theft?

IRS transcripts can be complicated to understand. Each code represents a different action on your account. The cycle dates show processing stages, and the amounts listed indicate adjustments or credits. Without seeing your specific transcript codes though, it's hard to give exact advice.

•Watch for code 846 - that's your refund issued date. If you see lots of 570/971 combos, those usually mean there's a review happening.

Hey, I was in the same boat last month! I started using taxr.ai and it was a game changer. It analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly what's happening and when to expect your money. Saved me hours of googling random codes lol. Here's the link: https://taxr.ai

•Literally changed everything for me! It costs like $5 but totally worth it. The AI breaks down every single code and gives you specific dates

•How secure is it? Don't want my info stolen

•Super secure! You just upload the transcript PDF and it analyzes it instantly. Doesn't store any personal info

Check if you have any letters from IRS. Sometimes they need additional verification before releasing refund.
