To address your follow-up question - yes, 'pending' status means they haven't made a determination on your claim yet. This is normal for partial unemployment claims where hours fluctuate, as the system requires additional verification. Regarding the averaging question you asked someone else - New York doesn't technically use an 'averaging' system. Instead, they calculate your benefits on a week-by-week basis. For each week, they check if you worked fewer than 4 days AND earned less than $595 (the current maximum threshold for 2025). If you meet both criteria for a given week, you qualify for partial benefits for that week only. So your one 40-hour week won't disqualify you for other weeks, but you won't receive benefits for that specific week.
Thanks for explaining! That makes sense. So I should just keep claiming each week based on that week's hours and not worry about the one full-time week affecting everything else?
Exactly. Keep claiming week by week. For any week you work 4+ days OR earn $595+, you'll report that and won't receive benefits for that week only. But you'll still be in the system and can claim for future weeks when your hours are reduced again. As for speeding up your pending status - contacting an agent can help, as they can sometimes release payments that are stuck in review. Based on current processing times, if you're still pending after 3-4 weeks, it's definitely worth trying to speak with someone.
Just wanted to update - I finally got through to someone at unemployment (used that Claimyr service someone mentioned above) and they said my payments were pending because my employer hadn't responded to their request for information about my hours. The agent was able to approve my payments since I had documentation of my reduced schedule. My first payment should be processed tomorrow and the card should arrive within 7-10 days after that. Thanks everyone for your help!
wait did u get a receipt or tracking or anything when u sent it? my friend said always get tracking for anything u send to government people
No I didn't get tracking... just regular mail. That was probably a mistake. Too late now though :
For future reference, always send payments to government agencies via certified mail with return receipt. It typically costs around $7 but provides proof of delivery and a tracking number. This documentation can be invaluable if there are any disputes about whether they received your payment.
my brother in law just went thru this exact thing! took 12 days total for his benefits to come back. he said the website updated first showing payment received then like 2 days later money came
That's reassuring to hear! I'll keep checking the website. Thanks for letting me know about your brother-in-law's experience.
Why is New York always SO SLOW with everything?? I'm in the same boat waiting. My brother lives in Ohio and got his state unemployment tax adjustment like 3 weeks ago already. Meanwhile NY is dragging their feet as usual. Don't even get me started on how they handled the original unemployment claims last year!!!
I know right?? I waited 11 weeks for my initial claim to be processed last year. Absolute nightmare. But to be fair, they're handling millions more claims than most other states.
UPDATE: Mine just came through!!! Woke up this morning and checked my emerald card - $1,342 deposited! So excited. Looks like they're processing them now. Check your accounts everyone!
congrats!! gonna go buy something nice with it?
STILL nothing on mine. 😠Starting to worry something's wrong with my account.
Update: I finally got through! I tried the Claimyr service that was mentioned, and I was connected to an agent in about 25 minutes. The agent was able to help me file my new claim over the phone. She said the system is totally swamped right now because of layoffs in the tech and manufacturing sectors. She also said that because I had a claim in 2023, there was some confusion in my account that was causing the website to time out. They had to do some kind of manual override. For anyone else having similar issues, definitely try getting through to a live person - the website might not work for certain situations like mine.
That's great news! Did they give you any indication of when you might receive your first payment? With new claims, they typically need to verify with your previous employer, which can take up to 10 business days.
heyy just checking in - did u get paid yet? im still waiting on mine after 2 weeks

If the selfie verification is where you're getting stuck, try these exact steps that worked for me: 1. Use a solid color wall as background (white or light blue works best) 2. Make sure light is coming from in front of you, not behind 3. Remove glasses, hats, or anything on your face 4. Hold your phone at eye level (not looking down at it) 5. Move slowly when following the prompts Also, their system sometimes has maintenance periods late at night, so try during business hours if possible.

•These are really helpful specific tips! I'll definitely try again with better lighting and a plain background. I was doing it with my window behind me which probably created shadows on my face.

Just checking back - were you able to resolve this issue? I'm curious if any of the suggestions worked for you, as I'm helping my brother who's running into similar ID.me verification problems with his NY unemployment claim.
