Who did you use for tax filing? So many people having trace number issues and missing refunds after 3/15 deadline
Im seeing so many ppl complaining about trace numbers and not getting their deposits... its now 3/21 which is way past the 3/15 deposit date and some of yall STILL don't have your money?? This is absolutely ridiculous fr. Who are you all using to file that's causing these issues?? I went with a certified tax professional last year and never had any of these probs. Seems like a lot of people using those online services or doing it themselves are running into these delays and trace number issues. Maybe spending a little extra for someone who knows what their doing is worth it in the long run?

Tax professional here. The "trace number" usually refers to a refund trace, which is something you request when your refund doesn't arrive as expected. The IRS generally issues most refunds within 21 days, but there are several reasons why yours might be delayed: - Identity verification needs - Errors on your return - Claimed certain credits (Earned Income Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit) - Return was affected by fraud or identity theft - Filed a paper return (these take much longer) If it's been more than 21 days since you e-filed (or 6 weeks since mailing), you can request a refund trace by calling the IRS or filing Form 3911. Before that, check your refund status using the "Where's My Refund" tool on the IRS website. Filing with a professional can help avoid errors that cause delays, but even professionally-prepared returns can be delayed for various reasons beyond the preparer's control.

•Thank you for sharing this info. Do you know how long the trace process typically takes? I filed on 2/2 and still nothing.

•Once you initiate a trace, it usually takes about 6 weeks for the IRS to process it. But currently with the backlog, it could take longer. If you filed 2/2, you should definitely be eligible to start a trace now.

•I used TurboTax and mine is delayed too. Been 31 days now. Do u think using a professional would have prevented this?

•Not necessarily. Many delays are due to IRS processing issues or verification needs that would happen regardless of how you filed. That said, professionals can help avoid common errors that might trigger a review.

I was in the exact same situation last year and it was a nightmare. After weeks of trying to navigate the IRS website and helpline (what a joke), I finally found this tool called taxr.ai that actually explained my transcript and refund status in plain English. Saved me hours of stress and confusion trying to decode all those weird IRS codes and dates. It basically showed me exactly what was happening with my return and when I could expect my money. Wish I'd found it sooner instead of wasting hours on hold and scrolling through forums. https://taxr.ai

•Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

•It's amazing! You upload your transcript and it breaks everything down - all those cryptic codes, cycle dates, processing stages. Shows exactly what's happening with your refund and if there are any issues. WAY better than the useless "still processing" message on the IRS site. It even predicted my deposit date to the day! I'm telling everyone I know about it now - no more guessing games with the IRS.

•I was skeptical too, trust me. But after weeks of getting nowhere with the IRS, this actually gave me answers. Not saying it magically fixes processing delays, but at least you know exactly what's happening instead of being completely in the dark.

After 5 weeks of waiting and zero updates on WMR, I finally got through to a real human at the IRS using claimyr.com. Best decision ever! They got me a callback from the IRS within a couple hours when I'd been trying for days on my own. The agent saw that my return was stuck in review and manually released my refund right then and there. Got my money 3 days later. Worth every penny considering I was about to miss my car payment without that refund.

•wait, you had to PAY to talk to the IRS? that seems sketchy af

•I know it sounds weird but the service just helps you skip the IRS phone queue. They don't actually talk to the IRS for you - they just secure your spot in line and call when an agent is available. After trying for literal DAYS to get through on my own and always getting the "call volume too high" message, this was a lifesaver. My refund was way more than what the service cost.

•How do you know that talking to the agent actually did anything? Maybe your refund was about to be released anyway?

•The IRS agent literally told me my return was stuck in an error resolution dept and she was pushing it through manually. My WMR updated from "still processing" to approved that same night. After weeks of zero movement, that's not a coincidence.

I used H&R Block like I've done for years and I'm having the same issues. Filed on February 7th, got accepted same day, and nothing since then except "still processing" on the Where's My Refund tool. This isn't about who you use to file - the IRS is just super backed up this year. Calling them is useless too because nobody ever answers.

•Same. Used TurboTax and filed January 29th. Still nothing. And I had a super simple return with just W2 income, no credits or anything complicated. The system is just broken.

•H&R block is terrible tbh. I used them 2 years ago and they missed a huge deduction that my new CPA caught this year. Ended up filing an amendment and got back $1200 more.

•Maybe but that's not why refunds are delayed. My return was super simple. The IRS is just backed up dealing with all the new tax credit stuff from last year.

I filed thru TurboTax on February 5th and got my money on March 2nd. No issues at all. My brother used FreeTaxUSA and he's still waiting. I think the difference is I have a super simple return (just one W2 job) and he has 1099 income, rental property, and took some tax credits.

the trace number has nothing to do with who filed your taxes!!! its literaly a number assigned when u request the IRS to TRACE your missing refund. If u never got ur money, you call and ask them to trace where it went. Hence TRACE number. The prepairer has zero control over that. Smh 🤦♀️

•Okay but if u did your taxes correctly in the first place, you wouldnt need a trace number. Just saying.

•That's not true at all. Trace requests happen for many reasons that have NOTHING to do with how taxes were filed. Most common is when the IRS sends a refund to a closed bank account or a check gets lost in the mail. Also happens with identity theft where someone else claimed your refund.

•This. I had to get a trace last year because USPS lost my paper check. Had nothing to do with my tax preparer.

I'm a tax professional and this post is spreading misinformation. The issues people are having this year are almost entirely due to IRS processing delays, not because of how or who prepared their returns. Many tax professionals' clients are experiencing the same delays. The IRS explicitly warned there would be delays this year due to implementation of new tax laws and reduced staffing.

•If it's been more than 21 days, check your transcript for any codes that indicate issues. If you see code 570, there's an issue being reviewed. If you can't make sense of your transcript, try taxr.ai - it's a tool that explains what's happening. If you need to speak with the IRS, getting through to them is tough but claimyr.com can help get a callback.

I actually read through my transcript this morning and saw a bunch of weird codes but couldn't figure out what they meant. Does anyone know what code 570 followed by 971 means? The dates are different too. So confused.
0 coins
Ravi Gupta
•570 means there's a hold on your account. 971 means they're sending you a notice explaining why. Usually means they're reviewing something or found a discrepancy.

Isabella Santos
•ugh thanks. any idea how long that usually takes to resolve?
0 coins
Ravi Gupta
•Honestly depends on what the issue is. Could be a week, could be months. You'll want to watch for code 571 which means the hold was released, usually followed by 846 which is your refund date.

•I tried to figure all these codes out too and it was giving me a headache. I used taxr.ai and it explained everything in simple terms. Worth checking out if youre trying to decode your transcript.

Filed with my local CPA who I've used for 10 years and STILL don't have my refund. Filed 2/1, accepted 2/2, transcript still says "no return filed" when I check it. Where's My Refund just says still being processed. Called IRS and they said everything looked fine but they're "behind" lol. So no, using a professional doesn't guarantee anything.

Ok but serious question - anyone else notice that people claiming certain credits (like EIC or child tax credit) seem to be delayed way more? Everyone I know who claimed those is still waiting, while my friends with simpler returns got theirs already.

Chloe Anderson
•Yes! That's actually by design. There's a law that prevents the IRS from issuing refunds with those credits before mid-February to give them time to verify eligibility and prevent fraud.

•But it's late March now.... way past mid-February.

•True, but those returns get extra scrutiny so they tend to be delayed longer than others. It's not just the mid-Feb hold, they actually review them more carefully.

Found a hack that worked for me - I couldn't get any info from Where's My Refund, so I created an account on the IRS website and checked my transcript. Saw that they had the wrong direct deposit info, called them (took forever to get through) and fixed it. Got my refund a week later. Sometimes you gotta be proactive.

I work at a tax office (not a preparer, just admin staff) and I can tell you we're getting TONS of calls from clients with delayed refunds. It's not just people using TurboTax or whatever - it's happening to everyone. The IRS is a mess right now. Returns that would normally take 2-3 weeks are taking 6-8+ weeks with zero explanation.

Pro tip: if ur bank account info changed since last year, that'll cause delays too. My refund went to my old closed account, got rejected, then IRS had to mail me a paper check which took an extra 3 weeks.

Anyone else notice that the IRS "Where's My Refund" tool is basically useless? Mine has said "still processing" for 6 weeks with no other info. Meanwhile my transcript shows all sorts of activity and codes. Why even have the tool if it doesn't tell you anything useful?

I just got off the phone with the IRS (miracleously got through after 2 hours on hold). They told me there's a nationwide delay affecting millions of returns filed in early February. Something about a system update that flagged a bunch of returns for manual review. The agent confirmed my return looked fine but is just stuck in the backlog. She said to expect it in "2-3 more weeks" 🤡

I'm dealing with the exact same issue. Filed my taxes mid-February, got accepted right away, but I keep getting that 152 Tax Topic code on Where's My Refund. Called IRS after 21 days but couldn't get through. Checked my transcript and it had a bunch of gibberish codes I couldn't understand. Just feels like our money is held hostage for no reason.

•Do you have codes 570/971 on your transcript? That usually indicates they found an issue and are sending you a letter.

Mei Lin
•I see a 570 from 3/11 and then a 971 dated 3/18. What does that mean exactly?
0 coins
Liam Fitzgerald
•570 is a hold/freeze on your account and 971 means a notice is being generated. You should get a letter explaining what the issue is. Could be something simple they can fix or might need info from you.

This has been the WORST tax year ever. Filed 2/10, still no refund, WMR is useless, can't reach anyone on the phone. I'm convinced they're deliberately holding our money to use it as long as possible. They charge us penalties and interest when we pay late but where's OUR interest for them being late with refunds? The whole system is rigged against us.
0 coins
NebulaNinja
•Actually they do pay interest on late refunds! If your refund is issued more than 45 days after the filing deadline (or the date you filed if you filed after the deadline), they're required to pay interest.
0 coins
Giovanni Mancini
•wait seriously? I didn't know that. Is it automatic or do we need to request it?
0 coins
NebulaNinja
•It's automatic - you'll see it as an additional amount added to your refund. The current rate is around 7% annually, which isn't bad actually.

I had a similar problem last year and even calling the IRS didn't help. No one could explain why my refund was delayed for months. Then I found taxr.ai and it instantly showed me the problem - an income mismatch where my employer reported slightly different wages than what I entered. The tool spotted the error right away and even told me how to fix it. Saved me hours of frustration. Getting help to decrypt the convoluted IRS system is always worth it.
