TurboTax Says Refund Processed but IRS Website Shows Nothing - Two Years of Problems
Hey everyone, I don't usually post here but I'm at my wit's end with this tax refund situation. For the past 2 years I've been dealing with issues between the IRS & TurboTax and I'm seriously frustrated. Never had problems before this and I've used TurboTax for 5+ years as an independent contractor. I STILL haven't received my refund from last year! TurboTax claimed it wasn't their issue but the IRS's problem. This year, I filed on February 18th and it was accepted February 21st, but there's still no tracking info. I even paid the extra $25 for that 5-day early deposit feature. The IRS website says they haven't processed my refund yet, but TurboTax says they have. When I chatted with their rep, they couldn't give me any estimated deposit date or tracking info. I'm just confused why I'm paying $25 for early deposit tracking that doesn't exist? In previous years, I've always e-filed, gotten tracking info, a deposit date, and then received my money all within a week. Last year - nothing ever showed up with zero explanation. This year the info between TurboTax and the IRS site doesn't match at all. I selected direct deposit with my local bank. Anyone else dealing with this mess?

I had a similar situation last year. The IRS site showed nothing, but TurboTax claimed it was processed. What finally worked for me was checking my tax transcript directly on the IRS site instead of using the Where's My Refund tool. The transcript showed my return was actually on hold for identity verification, but WMR never updated! Have you tried pulling your transcript yet? In my case, there was a code 570 that explained everything.

Thanks for this suggestion! I didn't even think about checking my transcript. I'm going to try that right now. This is my first time having major issues so I appreciate the tip.

This sounds exactly like what I went through in 2022. The discrepancy between TurboTax and the IRS site is frustrating but not uncommon. Back then, I discovered that the "accepted" status just means the IRS received your return, not that it's been fully processed. That $25 early deposit feature is only useful after the IRS approves the refund - it just means TurboTax's bank partner fronts you the money 5 days before the IRS would normally deposit it. If the IRS hasn't processed it yet, there's nothing for them to front. In my experience, calling the IRS directly was the only way to get real answers.

Do you think this could indicate potential audit flags on my return? I'm concerned that two years of processing issues might trigger something in their system.

Has anyone had success using the IRS2Go app instead of the website? I've heard sometimes it shows different information than the main website. Might be worth checking both sources?

Did you have to provide any additional documentation when you called? I'm a bit nervous about calling them directly...

According to IRS Publication 1345 (Guide for Authorized IRS e-file Providers), there's a significant difference between a return being "accepted" and being "processed." The IRS is currently experiencing higher than normal processing delays for tax year 2023 returns. In situations like yours where there's conflicting information, I've found that analyzing your actual tax transcript provides the most accurate status. The tool at https://taxr.ai is particularly useful because it translates all those confusing IRS codes and gives you a plain-English explanation of exactly what's happening with your return. It helped me understand that my return was in the verification queue when both TurboTax and the IRS website were giving me contradictory information.

Check for ID verification holds. This is common now. IRS doesn't always notify you. They're backlogged from previous years. Returns with credits get extra scrutiny. TurboTax only knows if it was transmitted successfully. They don't know actual processing status. Their "early deposit" only works after IRS approves. Worth checking if you have credits or deductions that trigger extra review.

So does this mean I should be proactively contacting the IRS about ID verification even if they haven't asked me to? How would I even know if that's what's holding things up?

Wow, I had no idea they might need ID verification without telling me! I just assumed everything was fine if I didn't hear anything. The tax system is so much more complicated than I realized.

I've seen this situation dozens of times, especially when comparing to my clients who use different filing services. The disconnect between TurboTax and the IRS is particularly bad this year. In cases like yours where you have multiple years of issues, direct contact with an IRS agent is usually the fastest solution. However, as you probably know, reaching an actual person at the IRS is nearly impossible these days - average hold times are 90+ minutes if you can even get in the queue. Many of my clients have had success using Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com) to bypass the hold times. They'll navigate the IRS phone tree and get you connected to an agent who can actually see what's happening with both years' returns. Sometimes there's a simple flag that needs to be removed or verification that can be done on the spot.

This TurboTax early deposit feature is like paying for express shipping on a package that hasn't even been manufactured yet. If the IRS hasn't processed your return, TurboTax can't advance you money they don't know is coming. I had a similar experience last tax season where my refund seemed to vanish into the void. I kept checking WMR like it was my social media feed, hoping for updates. The transcript finally updated after 8 weeks showing they needed to verify some information. I'm a bit worried this is becoming the new normal with how understaffed the IRS is these days.

Based on what you're describing, here's what's likely happening: ā¢ Your return has been received but is in the processing queue ā¢ TurboTax's "accepted" status only means transmission was successful ā¢ The $25 early deposit feature cannot work until the IRS approves your refund ā¢ Last year's unresolved issue might be affecting this year's processing I would recommend checking your tax transcripts for both years. The transcript will show if there are any holds or if you're under review. Be cautious about amendments or calling until you know exactly what's happening, as this can sometimes reset your place in line.

So you're saying I should definitely check transcripts before calling? I'm just worried about waiting too long and missing out on my refund again this year. Money's tight and I was really counting on this coming through!

After 17 years of doing my own taxes, I've learned that the IRS and tax software companies exist in parallel universes that occasionally exchange postcards. š Last year I had a similar nightmare scenario, but I stumbled on a solution that worked perfectly. I requested my wage and income transcripts AND my account transcript directly from the IRS. Turns out my return had been flagged for a mismatch that TurboTax had no idea about. Once I identified the specific issue (a 1099 amount was off by $12), I was able to call with the exact information they needed. Got my refund 9 days later after months of nothing. The technical term for what you're experiencing is "return purgatory" - it's been accepted but not fully processed.

This makes so much sense! I think I might have a similar issue with a 1099. Did you have to file an amended return or was the phone call enough to fix it?

How long did it take you to get your transcripts? I requested mine exactly 3 days ago and haven't received anything yet. Is there a faster way to access them?

When you mention account transcript, are you referring to the Record of Account Transcript or the Account Transcript? I believe there are several different types available on the IRS portal.

Have you checked if you have any outstanding tax issues from previous years? Sometimes the IRS will hold current refunds if there are unresolved issues from past returns. Since you mentioned not receiving last year's refund either, there might be a connection between the two years. Also, did you claim any tax credits this year like the Earned Income Credit or Child Tax Credit? Those automatically trigger additional processing time under the PATH Act.

I track tax processing times pretty carefully, and this year has been particularly slow. As of March 15, 2024, the IRS reported that about 22% of returns filed before February 22nd were still in processing, which is higher than normal. If you filed on February 18th and it was accepted on the 21st, you're right at that cutoff date where delays are more common. The TurboTax early deposit feature is misleading - they can only advance your refund after the IRS has approved it and provided a direct deposit date. Since the IRS hasn't processed it yet, TurboTax can't give you any tracking. I'd recommend waiting until at least April 3rd (45 days from filing) before taking more aggressive action.
