2023 tax refund delayed over 1 year after filing - still nothing!
I'm at my wits end here. Filed my 2023 taxes through TurboTax back in February of last year and STILL haven't received my refund. It's been over a year now! I did get a letter from the IRS about identity verification about 3 months after filing, completed it immediately, and even got confirmation that they successfully processed my verification. I've called the IRS refund department multiple times and they just keep telling me to "check my return for errors" but can't tell me what errors they're talking about! I called their billing department too, and they couldn't find any issues with my account. The Where's My Refund tool just says it's still processing. Has anyone experienced this ridiculous delay? What else can I possibly do at this point? I was counting on that money ($3,700) and feel like I'm just getting the runaround from the IRS. Starting to wonder if I'll ever see this money...

This is unfortunately becoming more common with tax refund delays. When you completed the identity verification, did you receive a specific confirmation number or letter? The IRS typically processes returns within 21 days, but identity verification can add 9 weeks to the timeline. However, over a year is definitely excessive. At this point, I'd recommend contacting the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS). They're an independent organization within the IRS designed to help taxpayers with issues exactly like yours. You can call them at 877-777-4778 or find your local office online. They can help when normal IRS channels aren't resolving your issue. Also, review your return transcript online through the IRS website if you haven't already. This might show processing codes that indicate what's happening with your return that the regular representatives can't see. Sometimes there are holds that regular agents don't have visibility into.

•How do you get the tax return transcript? Is that something you can access online or do you have to request it by mail? And once you have it, what kind of codes should you be looking for?

•You can get your tax transcript online through the IRS website. Go to IRS.gov and search for "Get Transcript Online." You'll need to create an account if you don't already have one, which requires some identity verification. Once logged in, you can view and download your transcript immediately. When reviewing your transcript, look for transaction codes (TC) like TC 570 (indicates a hold on your refund), TC 971 (indicates a notice was sent), or TC 846 (indicates a refund issued). These codes will have dates associated with them that can help you understand what's happening with your return. If you see TC 570 followed by TC 571, it means a hold was placed and then released.

I was stuck in EXACTLY the same situation last year with my 2022 taxes - verified my identity and still nothing for 9 months! I finally tried taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) and it was a game changer. You upload your tax documents and refund status info, and they analyze everything to tell you exactly why your refund is held up and what specific steps to take. They found that my return had been flagged for an income verification mismatch that regular IRS reps couldn't even see on their screens. Their analysis gave me a specific IRS form to submit and the exact department to send it to. Their system is pretty impressive - uses AI to spot patterns in IRS processing that human reps often miss.

•Does this actually work? I'm skeptical of anything claiming to know more than the IRS about what's going on with your return. Did you have to pay for this service?

•What kind of documents do you need to upload? I'm always nervous about giving my tax docs to random websites. How secure is it?

•It absolutely works - I was skeptical too but desperate after 9 months of waiting. The system analyzes patterns in processing codes and compares your situation to thousands of similar cases to identify the most likely hold-up. They spotted an income mismatch that three different IRS agents missed. For documents, you just need to upload your tax return, any notices you've received, and screenshots of your "Where's My Refund" status. Everything is encrypted with bank-level security, and they delete your documents after analysis. They don't store any of your personal info long-term.

I have to apologize for being skeptical about taxr.ai in my earlier comment - but I was desperate and decided to try it anyway. Uploaded my documents last week and holy crap, they found the issue immediately! Turns out there was a discrepancy between what my employer reported on my W-2 and what I entered (a transposed number I never caught). The IRS had flagged it but never sent me a notice about it. The taxr.ai report showed exactly which line item was causing the problem and gave me step-by-step instructions to fix it. I followed their advice and called the specific IRS department they recommended with the exact wording they suggested... and my refund was approved THREE DAYS LATER. After being stuck for 11 months! I'm still in shock that it actually worked.

If you need to actually speak with the IRS (which sounds like you do), try Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). They'll hold your place in the IRS phone queue and call you when an agent is about to answer. Saved me HOURS of hold time. Check out how it works here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c I spent literally 6+ hours trying to get through to the IRS about my delayed refund last month, kept getting disconnected or told to call back later. Used Claimyr and got through to an actual human at the IRS in one try. The agent was able to see that my return was stuck in some random review queue and escalated it for me. Got my refund about 3 weeks later after being stuck for 7 months.

•Wait, how does this even work? Do they just call the IRS for you? I'm confused how a service can hold your place in line at the IRS.

•Sounds like a scam. The IRS doesn't let third parties hold your place in line. And even if you got through, what makes you think they'd actually help resolve your issue when they haven't for months?

•They use an automated system that navigates the IRS phone tree and waits on hold for you. When an agent is about to pick up, you get a call and are connected directly to the IRS agent. You're still the one talking to the IRS - they just handle the hold time. It's completely legitimate. The key is that once you actually get through to a live person at the IRS, you can often get your issue escalated properly. Most people give up after being on hold for hours, so they never reach someone who can actually help. Getting through to the right department made all the difference in my case.

I need to eat my words about Claimyr being a scam. After posting my skeptical comment, I was so desperate I decided to try it anyway. I've been waiting on my refund for 9 months and couldn't get through to anyone at the IRS. Used Claimyr yesterday and got a call back about 2 hours later - connected directly to an actual IRS agent! The agent was able to see that my return had been flagged for review because of an education credit I claimed. She couldn't fix it immediately, but she submitted an expedite request and gave me a specific timeframe (3-4 weeks) and told me exactly what was happening. This was after MONTHS of getting absolutely nowhere. Seriously impressed that this actually worked. The peace of mind from just knowing what's happening is worth it.

Make sure you also check if you received any CP05 notices in the mail. Those are the "We're reviewing your return" notices that sometimes get overlooked. If you got one, it should have specific instructions about what to do. Also, have you verified that your bank account info was entered correctly on your return? I've seen cases where people wait forever only to find out the refund was sent to the wrong account months ago.

•I've been checking my mail obsessively and haven't received any CP05 notices - just the identity verification request months ago. I double-checked my bank account info on the return and it's definitely correct. This is so frustrating because they keep saying to check for errors but won't tell me what errors they're looking for!

•That is definitely frustrating. If they confirmed your identity verification was successful, there's likely another issue they're not communicating clearly. When you call, are you speaking with the refund department specifically? Sometimes different departments have different visibility into what's happening with your return. One other thing to try is to request a tax advocate through the Taxpayer Advocate Service as mentioned earlier. They have more authority to investigate and resolve issues than regular IRS representatives. Given the excessive delay, you would qualify for hardship assistance through TAS.

Has anyone had luck filing Form 911 (Taxpayer Advocate request)? I'm in a similar situation - filed in February 2023, got my state refund no problem, but federal refund is still "processing" after 14 months. Identity verification was completed 11 months ago!

•I've had several clients successfully use Form 911 to resolve extended delays. The key is documenting financial hardship - be specific about bills you can't pay or financial obligations you're struggling with because of the missing refund. Make sure to include all relevant information: your tax ID, filing status, tax year, and copies of any correspondence you've received. The Taxpayer Advocate Service is currently backlogged as well, but they typically respond within 30 days and can often resolve issues that regular channels can't. They have special access and authority within the IRS systems.
