No Letter, No Movement, Different Answers from Each IRS Rep - What's Going On This Tax Season?

I'm at my wit's end with this tax season. I filed on February 1st - way earlier than last year when I got my refund within 2 weeks. Now it's been over 2 months with absolutely no movement. No letter, no transcript updates, nothing. I've called the IRS three separate times and spoken with three different representatives. The first one said my return was still processing (normal). The second told me there was a "review" but couldn't explain why. The third said there's no issues flagged but it's "in queue" whatever that means. This is nothing like my previous experiences filing taxes. Even during COVID things weren't this disorganized. Is anyone else experiencing this kind of run-around? I've triple-checked my return and everything is perfectly in order just like my previous years.

The IRS this season is like a restaurant with half the staff and twice the customers. They're drowning in backlog while working with outdated systems and constantly changing tax codes. It's no wonder you're getting different answers - the left hand doesn't know what the right is doing. The system is so overwhelmed that even basic processing is inconsistent across departments.

To expand on this explanation, what's likely happening is your return is sitting in one of several processing queues: 1. Initial verification queue 2. Income verification queue 3. Credit verification queue 4. Manual review queue Depending which representative you speak with, they may only have visibility into certain aspects of the process. Some can see it's in processing but not which specific queue, while others might see different statuses depending on which system they check.

This happened to me too! I filed January 29th and got the EXACT same runaround. First rep said everything was fine, second one mentioned something about a "hold code" but couldn't tell me why, third one said there was nothing wrong at all. Finally got my refund last week after nearly 3 months of waiting with zero explanation. The stress was unreal since I was counting on that money for car repairs.

Based on what you've described, it seems that your return is possibly in what's sometimes referred to as the "manual review queue." This can happen for various reasons, including, but not limited to, identity verification needs, income discrepancy flags, or perhaps certain credits that might trigger additional scrutiny. It's worth noting that the IRS is experiencing significant staffing challenges this year, which is likely contributing to the inconsistent information you're receiving.

What's the average processing time for returns stuck in manual review? I've been in limbo for 67 days now with no transcript updates whatsoever.

I'm FURIOUS about the same thing happening to me! Filed February 10th and absolutely NOTHING since then! I called the IRS 14 times and spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. Finally I used Claimyr.com and got through to an actual human being in about 15 minutes! The agent was able to see my file was flagged for a simple verification that nobody had bothered to tell me about. Once I knew what was happening, I could actually fix it! So frustrating but at least I finally have answers. Seriously, try Claimyr - it saved me from pulling my hair out: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

There's actually a systemic issue this tax season according to several tax professional forums I follow. The IRS implemented new fraud detection algorithms that are flagging significantly more returns for manual review. According to the National Taxpayer Advocate report (https://taxpayeradvocate.irs.gov/reports/), processing times are up 37% compared to last year. Many returns are being held without any notification letters being generated, which is why you're experiencing silence.

I've been tracking this exact issue for my clients. Out of 76 returns I've prepared this season, approximately 22% are experiencing delays without explanation. The IRS's internal system known as IDRS is showing code 570 (additional account action pending) on many transcripts, but no corresponding 971 code (notice issued) which would typically generate a letter explaining the hold.

Does this mean we should expect delays on our state returns too? I'm worried because I budgeted for both refunds to cover some unexpected medical expenses from January... 😬

Thank you for sharing that report link! I've been searching for concrete information on what's happening this year.

I'm curious - does the report mention if certain types of returns are being flagged more frequently? I'm wondering if specific credits or deductions are triggering these reviews.

I tracked exactly 213 cases similar to yours on tax forums this season. In approximately 67% of these cases, the issue was resolved within 91 days without any letter ever being sent. The problem is that the IRS has 3 separate computer systems that don't communicate well with each other. When I was stuck in a similar situation, I used https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript once it finally appeared. It explained that code 570 without a corresponding 971 typically means an automated review that doesn't generate correspondence. The tool predicted my refund date within 2 days of actual deposit.

After being stuck in the same situation, I finally got movement! Here's what worked for me: • Called the IRS Tax Advocate Service instead of the main line • Specifically mentioned "financial hardship" due to the delayed refund • Requested they file Form 911 (Taxpayer Advocate Request) • Got assigned a case advocate who found my return was flagged for income verification • Refund processed within 10 days after advocate intervention Such a relief after 2.5 months of zero information!

According to Internal Revenue Manual 21.5.6.4.35.3, when multiple representatives provide conflicting information, you should request to speak with a manager or ask for your case to be escalated to the Accounts Management department. Per IRC §6501, the IRS must provide written notification of any substantive issues with your return within a reasonable timeframe. You might also consider contacting your local Taxpayer Advocate Service office, as they have authority under IRC §7803(c) to intervene in cases with significant delays.

I waited from January 24th until April 3rd with absolutely no movement on my refund. Called on March 2nd, March 15th, and March 29th - got different answers each time. Then on April 5th, I suddenly received a letter dated March 12th requesting verification of my identity! The letter had been sitting in the mail system for weeks. After verifying on April 7th, my refund was deposited on April 15th. Check your mail carefully - the letters don't always arrive in a timely manner.

Has anyone who filed in early February actually received their refund yet? I'm in the same boat and wondering if there's a pattern with early filers specifically. Last year I filed in March and had my refund in 8 days, but my friend who filed in February waited almost 2 months.

I filed February 3rd and JUST got my direct deposit yesterday! No explanation for the delay, no letters, nothing. It just suddenly appeared with a deposit date. I needed that money weeks ago for property taxes due April 1st - had to put it on a credit card instead. Why even bother with early filing if they're going to prioritize later filers?!

Did you claim any tax credits like the Child Tax Credit or Earned Income Credit? I'm wondering if that's affecting the processing time for early filers?

I've been tracking this on r/IRS and several FB groups. Early Feb filers seem to be stuck in some kind of backlog. Ppl who filed mid-March are getting refunds faster than Jan/early Feb filers. Makes zero sense but def a pattern IMO.

I was in exactly the same position as you last month - called multiple times, different answers each time, no letters, nothing on transcripts. I was about to lose my mind compared to previous years when everything was smooth. But then suddenly last Wednesday my transcript updated and the refund hit my account Friday! No explanation, no letter, just money appearing. Hang in there - it seems like they're working through a massive backlog just like when my cousin filed during the height of COVID and waited 4 months.

I'm experiencing the exact same nightmare! Filed January 28th and it's been complete radio silence since then. What's really frustrating is that I've been filing taxes for 15 years and this has NEVER happened before. Usually I get my refund within 2-3 weeks max. I called last week and the rep told me my return was "under review" but couldn't give me any timeline or explanation of what they're reviewing. My return is straightforward - W-2, standard deduction, no major changes from last year. It's like they're treating every return as suspicious now. The worst part is not knowing if I should be worried or if this is just the new normal. Are they expecting us to just sit around indefinitely while they figure out their internal processes? At least send a letter explaining what's happening!
