TurboTax shows $5,913 refund "Pending" but IRS WMR says $7,095 with 3/12 DDD - Which is correct?
I filed my taxes through TurboTax on January 27th and was given a direct deposit date of March 12th according to the IRS WMR tool. But when I check my status in TurboTax, it's showing something completely different. The TurboTax app shows my 2024 tax return with a $5,913 refund amount (not the $7,095 I was expecting). Under the status, it only shows "Pending" for my refund delivery. The TurboTax interface specifically says "We could not expedite your refund. No early refund fee was charged." It confirms my "Return received by IRS" on 01/27 with the $5,913 refund amount. There's even a "see fees deducted" option which I haven't clicked yet. At the bottom of the screen there's a "Where's my refund?" button and "Live help" option, but then it cuts off with the message "You can start tracking your refund after we..." and doesn't show the rest. I'm really confused because the IRS Where's My Refund tool is telling me one date (March 12th), while TurboTax is still showing "Pending" with no estimated date. Which system should I trust? Has anyone else experienced this discrepancy between the IRS tool and TurboTax status? I just want to know when I'll actually receive my $5,913.

The IRS Where's My Refund tool is always the most accurate source for refund status. TurboTax often lags behind on status updates because they don't have direct access to IRS processing systems. If WMR is showing a Direct Deposit Date (DDD) of 3/12, that's what you should trust. The message in TurboTax about "We could not expedite your refund" is just telling you that they didn't offer or charge you for their refund advance product. It has nothing to do with your actual refund timing from the IRS. When you have a confirmed DDD date, you can typically expect the money in your account on that date or sometimes 1-2 days earlier depending on your bank. Some credit unions and online banks may post deposits early when they receive the notification from the Treasury. Keep checking WMR for the most current status, and if you're really concerned, you can check your tax transcript on IRS.gov which will show the exact refund processing codes and dates.

•Thank you so much! This is super helpful. I'll ignore TurboTax status and focus on the WMR tool instead.

•This is 100% correct advice. TT doesn't actually know anything about ur refund processing after they e-file it for you. They're just guessing.

•yeah i had the exact same situation last year. TT was still stuck on 'pending' even after my refund hit my account lol

I was in the same exact situation trying to understand what was going on with my refund. TurboTax showed pending while the WMR tool showed a date, but both had different information. I was going crazy trying to piece together all these different statuses. I finally tried taxr.ai and it saved me so much confusion. It read my transcript and told me exactly what was happening with my return, when I'd get paid, and explained all the codes in plain English. You should check it out at https://taxr.ai - definitely the best way to actually understand what's happening with your refund!

•Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

•It's honestly amazing! You upload your transcript and it immediately breaks everything down in plain english. It explained all my cycle codes, processing dates, and even identified potential delays before they happened. Its like having an actual tax professional read your transcript for you. Saved me hours of googling and guessing. Best tool ive found in years for dealing with tax season stress!

•Yeah there is a cost but it's worth every penny. I spent weeks last year freaking out and calling the IRS (could never get through). This year I just uploaded my transcript and had answers in seconds. No more anxiety waiting for my money!

After failing to get ANY useful info from TurboTax about my refund status, I found this app called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me through to a live IRS agent in about 30 minutes. The agent confirmed my DDD and explained why TurboTax wasn't showing the correct info. Talking to a real person at the IRS gave me peace of mind and saved me from checking WMR 50 times a day lol. Definitely check it out if you need to talk to someone at the IRS.

•Wait for real? I thought it was impossible to get through to the IRS? How does it work?

•It somehow navigates their phone system and holds for you, then calls you back when an agent is about to pick up. I was skeptical too but it worked! Was the only way I got my refund status sorted out after weeks of confusion.

•I literally used it last week. After trying to call the IRS myself for 3 days straight with no luck. It was the best money I've ever spent to finally get my questions answered. But whatevs, keep struggling with the phone system if you want 🤷♀️

•I used it too!! My refund was on hold for "verification" and I couldn't figure out what that meant. Finally got through to an agent who fixed it on the spot. My deposit came 2 days later!

TurboTax is notorious for not updating their status correctly. Mine still showed "Pending" even AFTER my refund was deposited in my account 😂 Trust the WMR tool, not TurboTax.

WMR tool says this will be deposited on 3/12 and bank account still shows nothing. I have USAA and they usually post 1-2 days early. Anyone else with a DDD of 3/12 get theirs yet?

The IRS "where's my refund" tool BARELY works half the time anyway. I've already gotten my refund and it STILL shows processing. The whole system is broken. 🤡

Did you have any fees taken out of your refund or get an advance? Sometimes when you do that, it goes through a third-party bank first which can delay things by a day or two. Something to consider if your WMR shows DDD but you haven't received it on that day.

•No I didn't get an advance. TurboTax actually says "No early refund fee was charged" in my account. And I paid for TurboTax with my credit card so no fees should come out of the refund itself.

Keisha Jackson
•That's good! Then you should definitely get it on or maybe even before your DDD. The bank-to-bank transfers are what can cause delays. Sounds like yours will be direct from the treasury.

I know you asked about TurboTax but if you really want to know what's happening with your refund, I'd recommend getting your tax transcript from the IRS website. It shows way more details than either WMR or TurboTax, including all the internal processing codes. That's how I figured out my refund was delayed last year even when WMR was saying it was coming.

•Same boat. I owe almost 2k. What did ppl do to get such big refunds???

•Probably have kids or mortgage interest. Those are the big ones. Or they're just getting their own money back because they're withholding too much all year.

Pro Tip: If you're getting a big refund like this, you might want to adjust your W-4 withholdings so you get more money in each paycheck throughout the year instead of giving the IRS an interest-free loan. Just a thought! 💯

I stopped dealing with these conflicting messages from tax software and the IRS tools. I used taxr.ai to analyze my transcript this year and it showed me exactly when my refund would arrive, explained all the codes, and even warned me about potential issues. Best $$ I've spent during tax season! They're at https://taxr.ai if anyone else is tired of guessing games.

Can I ask what bank you use? Different banks post deposits at different times. I have Chime and they usually post 2 days before the official date.

Listen THIS IS NORMAL. Turbo Tax has NO IDEA whats happening after they submit your return. The only ppl who know the actual status is the IRS. TT is just a middle man. This happens every year and everyone panics for no reason!

The TurboTax app is hot garbage. Used them for 5 years and every year the status tracking breaks or shows wrong info. One time they emailed me saying my return was rejected when it had already been accepted and processed! 🤦♂️

•Same here! Last year TT told me I had an error that needed fixing AFTER I already got my refund deposited. Their systems dont sync with IRS at all.

•I switched to FreeTaxUSA. Way cheaper and actually MORE features than TT. And their status updates actually matched what the IRS said.

It normal for TT to not update. I've used them for 6 years and they never update the status correctly. Trust the WMR or IRS2Go app.

The IRS processing times are all over the place this year. Some people filing in February are getting their refunds before people who filed in January. The system makes no sense.

Check your bank account even if the apps aren't updating. Sometimes the deposit just shows up without any of the trackers updating. Happened to me last year.

Are you claiming any credits like Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit? Those automatically delay processing until at least mid-February due to the PATH Act, even if you filed in January. That might explain the discrepancy in what you're seeing.

Mei Zhang
•Yes I am claiming EIC. But my WMR is showing the DDD of 3/12 so I think I'm past that PATH Act hold period now? Just wondering why TurboTax hasn't caught up.
0 coins
Mateo Perez
•If you have a DDD, then yes you're past the PATH Act hold. TurboTax just sucks at updating status - they don't actually have real-time access to IRS systems so they're always behind.

You guys need to stop obsessing over these apps and just wait for your money. Checking 10 times a day won't make it come any faster.
