My refund amount on IRS transcript is $800 more than what TurboTax shows - filed with refund advance and fees taken out, no DDD yet
I filed my taxes through TurboTax in April with the option to have my fees taken out of my refund. I also tried for that 5 day early refund advance thing but got denied. My IRS transcript shows a DDD of 5/12 but here we are almost a week later and still no money. When I check my transcript, it says my refund amount is $3,450 but when I log into TurboTax it only shows $2,650 coming to me. That's an $800 difference! I called the IRS and they confirmed they're sending the $3,450 amount. Then I called TurboTax and they were absolutely no help - just kept saying to follow what the IRS says. I have no idea where my money went or if the fees they took out explain that huge difference. Has anyone dealt with this before? I'm so confused about what's happening with my refund.

The difference is likely due to the refund transfer fee and any other fees you authorized TurboTax to deduct from your refund. When you choose to have fees taken out of your refund, TurboTax creates a temporary bank account where your full refund from the IRS goes first. Then they deduct their fees from that account before sending the remainder to you. Here's what's probably happening: - IRS sent full $3,450 to the temporary bank account set up by TurboTax - TurboTax is taking out their fees (filing fees, state fees, refund transfer fee) - The remaining $2,650 is what you'll actually receive You should check your TurboTax receipt/confirmation to see the breakdown of all fees. The refund transfer service itself usually costs around $40, but if you also paid for the software, state filing, and other add-ons, those could easily add up to the difference you're seeing. As for the delayed deposit, if your DDD was 5/12, banks typically take 1-5 business days to process after that date. If you don't see it by the end of this week, I'd contact your bank.

•Thank you for explaining! I just checked my original confirmation email and you're right - there were a bunch of fees I forgot about. Still seems like a lot though

•This happened 2 me last year too. Turbo Tax fees are CRAZY high now! I switched to taxr.ai this year and saved so much. Plus it actually explained evrything clearly so I could understand where my money was going.

•wait, $800 still seems like a LOT for just filing fees. did you buy audit protection or something? i've never paid more than like $200 total with TT

•I think I did get that audit protection thing. Plus I paid for the deluxe version, state filing, and the refund transfer fee. It all adds up I guess 😫

Hey, I was in almost the exact same situation last month! Super frustrating trying to figure out why the amounts were different. I finally got tired of calling and getting nowhere, so I tried taxr.ai and it was a game changer. It analyzed my transcript and immediately showed me where all my money went - including how the temp account process works with TurboTax and exactly what fees were taken out. I was able to see line by line what happened instead of trying to be a detective piecing together info from different sources. I use it every week now to check my account for changes. Seriously, check out https://taxr.ai - it saved me so much headache!

•Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

•It does WAY more than just read it! It actually explains every code and transaction in plain english, shows you exactly where your money is, predicts when you'll get paid, and even has this cool timeline view. I was blown away honestly. I've been recommending it to everyone I know with tax issues.

•OMG I just tried it and you're right, this thing is AMAZING!! I've been staring at my transcript for months not understanding half of it, and this literally broke everything down in like 30 seconds. Why isn't everyone using this?!? Thanks for the recommendation! 💯

•does it cost anything? seems sus that it can magically solve everyone's problems lol

•It's not magic - it's just really good at explaining the IRS jargon in normal human language. And yeah there's a cost but considering I spent hours on hold with the IRS and got nowhere, it was 100% worth it to finally understand my situation.

•I used it too! Honestly wish I'd known about it months ago instead of just guessing at what all those weird codes meant 🤦♀️

After banging my head against the wall for weeks trying to get through to the IRS about a similar issue, I finally found a solution! I used claimyr.com and got connected to an actual IRS agent who explained everything. They confirmed that the difference was because of all the TurboTax fees AND they helped me track exactly where my refund was in the process. Talking to a real person made all the difference - they even gave me the exact date my bank would receive the deposit. Honestly it was the best money I've ever spent considering I was about to lose my mind waiting and wondering.

•Seriously? You actually got through to a real person at the IRS? I've been trying for like 2 months 🤔

•Yes! That's what claimyr.com does - they basically wait on hold for you and then call you when they have an agent on the line. I was skeptical at first but getting my questions answered directly by the IRS was exactly what I needed. The agent even helped me understand why there was a delay with my deposit.

•sounds fake tbh. nobody gets through to the IRS lol

•I totally get the skepticism, I felt the same way! But it actually works. They use some system that keeps redialing and navigating the phone tree until they get through. Then when they have an agent, they call you and connect you. Saved me literally hours of hold time.

•Just tried it and IT ACTUALLY WORKED! Got a call back in about 45 mins and spoke to an IRS agent who helped me with my amended return issue. Where has this been all my life?!

This happens every year with TurboTax and people are always shocked by it. When you choose to have your fees taken out of your refund, you're actually paying EXTRA for that privilege! The regular filing fees plus state plus the extra "convenience fee" for taking it from your refund adds up fast. Plus if you got any add-ons like audit protection or max refund guarantee, those aren't cheap either. The system is working as designed - TurboTax gets paid first, you get what's left. Check your original filing confirmation for the exact breakdown.

The IRS is sending the full amount to TurboTax's temp bank. Then TurboTax takes their cut and gives you what's left. That $800 difference is all their fees. I stopped using them years ago because of this exact issue - they're not transparent about how much they actually charge until it's too late.

•I had no idea it would be so much! Definitely not using them next year. Any recommendations for alternatives?

•I've been using FreeTaxUSA for simple returns and its waaay cheaper. For complex situations I've heard good things about taxr.ai too.

•File directly with the IRS for free! If you make under $73k you qualify for their free file program. TurboTax and others deliberately hide this option 😡

Exact same thing happened to me! I was PISSED when I saw the difference until I went back and added up all the fees. The refund advance application (even though you got denied), the state filing, the deluxe/premium whatever package, the refund processing fee, and the "convenience" of having fees taken from your refund ALL cost extra. TurboTax is basically a giant fee factory at this point.

•It's ridiculous! I knew there would be some fees but $800?! That's like 25% of my refund gone just like that.

As for the delay, even though your DDD was 5/12, if you chose to have fees taken out, it adds extra time. The money has to go to TurboTax's bank first, then they take their cut, then they send the rest to you. That whole process can add 3-5 business days beyond your DDD.

•That makes sense. I just wish they made that clearer when I was filing. Thanks for explaining!

Pro tip for next year: NEVER choose to have fees taken out of your refund! It's always cheaper to pay the fees upfront with a credit card. The "refund transfer" or "refund processing" fee is basically just an extra charge for the convenience of not having to pay upfront.

•THIS!!! I learned this the hard way too. They charge you like $40-50 JUST for the privilege of taking their other fees out of your refund. It's a complete racket.

•Definitely doing this next year. Lesson learned!

check ur bank account details in turbotax to make sure they have the right account. sometimes if there's an issue with the bank info, turbotax will hold the money or send you a check instead which takes way longer.

Ok I'm seeing everyone focus on the fees, which is prob right, but also consider this: do you have any offsets? Like do you owe back child support, student loans, or state taxes? The IRS might have taken some of your refund to pay those. Just another possibility to consider.

StarSailor}
•I don't think I have any offsets, but that's a good point. Is there any way to check for that specifically?

Natasha Volkova
•You can call the Treasury Offset Program at 1-800-304-3107 to see if you have any offsets. But honestly, the TurboTax fees explanation makes more sense given what you described.

Wait patiently for another few days. The transfer from TurboTax to your actual bank can take 3-5 business days after your DDD. If you don't see anything by next Monday, then start making calls again.

TurboTax is THE WORST! Classic bait and switch with their fees. I had almost the exact same thing happen but was missing $750 from my refund. I was so mad I took screenshots of everything and reported them to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Didn't get my money back but at least it felt good to report them lol

•Not just TurboTax - H&R Block and others do the same thing. The whole tax prep industry is designed to extract as much money as possible. That's why they lobby against making filing taxes simpler.

•So true. I'm in Canada now and the govt literally has a free system that does your taxes for you if you want. The US system is pure robbery.

this is why i always check the fee breakdwn before submitting! turbotax hits you with: - software fee ($50-120) - state filing ($40-50 per state) - audit protection if you clicked yes ($40-60) - refund processing fee ($40) - refund advance application fee (even if denied!) it adds up fast. always pay the fees with a credit card directly if you can, never from your refund!

Download your TurboTax PDF and look at the very last pages. There should be a section called "Bank Fee Disclosure" or something similar that shows exactly what they charged you. Be warned: you're gonna be mad when you see it all itemized 🤡

Somethings not adding up... Even with ALL the TurboTax fees, $800 seems excessive. I'd demand an itemized breakdown from them. Make them explain every penny of that difference.

•You'd be surprised. Deluxe package ($120) + state filing ($50) + refund transfer fee ($40) + audit protection ($60) + refund advance application ($50) + any add-on services can easily hit $400-500. Then if they filed for multiple states or had other premium features, $800 isn't impossible.
