IRS says refund sent to wrong account number - TurboTax/Credit Karma mixup but got advance?

I'm really confused. I checked my refund status on the IRS website and it says my refund was sent on October 6th, but nothing has shown up in my checking account yet (it's now October 12th). When I logged into my TurboTax account and looked at my return details, I noticed something weird - it shows the correct routing number for my bank but the account number is completely different from my actual checking account. The strange thing is I did get my tax advance that TurboTax offered back when I filed in July. Has anyone experienced something similar? Did your money eventually show up? I'm worried my refund of $4,278 went to some random account that isn't mine.

This is actually a common issue with TurboTax and Credit Karma Tax integration. What happened is that when TurboTax pulled your Credit Karma info, it likely grabbed a temporary account number that Credit Karma uses for processing the advance, not your actual direct deposit account. Here's what you need to do: 1. Contact TurboTax customer service immediately and explain the situation. They need to track where the payment went. 2. Check if you have any other accounts with Credit Karma that might have received the funds. 3. Contact the IRS at 800-829-1040. When you call, have your tax return handy because they'll ask for information from it to verify your identity. 4. If the wrong account number is valid but not yours, the bank will reject the deposit and the IRS will mail you a paper check instead. This usually takes 2-3 weeks after the rejection. 5. If the deposit was accepted by that account, you'll need to file Form 3911 (Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund) with the IRS to start a trace on your refund. Don't panic yet - this happens more than you'd think with tax software integrations!

Thank you so much for the detailed response. I already tried calling the IRS but I couldnt get through. I'll try again tomorrow morning.

Have you tried using Claimyr? (claimyr.com) I was in this exact situation last year and couldn't get through to the IRS after trying for days. I used their service and got a callback from an IRS agent within like 30 minutes. Best money I ever spent considering my refund was $3k+

Never heard of Claimyr before. Does it actually work? I've been calling the IRS number nonstop with no luck.

Absolutely works. I was skeptical too but I was desperate. The way it works is they basically navigate the IRS phone tree for you and when they reach a point where an agent would be available, they connect you. Saved me hours of frustration and helped me get my refund issue fixed in one call.

I second this. Used Claimyr last month when my refund was sent to a closed account. Got a real person on the phone same day after trying for weeks on my own. IRS fixed it and I got my check 10 days later.

Nah man, I was just as skeptical. But when you've been on hold with the IRS for 3+ hours multiple days in a row, you get desperate. It's just a tool that works. I don't work for them or anything, just sharing what helped me get my $$ back faster.

The best way to actually understand what's going on with your refund is to use taxr.ai - I was in exactly your situation trying to figure out where my refund went. Instead of guessing and stressing, I used this tool that explained exactly what happened with my deposit. It showed the exact account my refund was sent to and explained all the codes on my transcript that I couldn't understand before. Seriously saved me so much time instead of trying to be a detective piecing together what happened. Check it out at https://taxr.ai - it's insanely good! I use it every week to track all my tax stuff now.

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It's way more than just reading the transcript. It actually explains everything in plain English - like what each code means for YOUR specific situation, not just generic definitions. It also shows timelines for when you should expect your refund based on your specific case. I was shocked at how detailed it was.

OMG THIS IS AMAZING!!! Just tried it and within minutes I understood exactly what happened to my refund! Apparently it was rejected from the wrong account and they're mailing a check now. The IRS website just kept saying 'refund sent' with no explanation. THANK YOU SO MUCH for recommending this!!!

Yeah there's a fee, but considering I spent 3 weeks stressing and calling the IRS with no answers, it was totally worth it to finally understand what was happening with thousands of dollars of my money.

i was gonna ask the same. Did u have to put in personal info to use it?

You just upload your transcript that you download from the IRS website. You already have to verify your identity with the IRS to get that transcript anyway, so it's not like giving out new info to anyone.

I found a way to get through to a real human at the IRS about this exact issue! I used this calling service from claimyr.com after banging my head against the wall trying to reach someone for weeks. Got connected to an agent in less than an hour who explained my refund was sent to a temporary account TurboTax set up, but it was rejected and they were going to mail a paper check instead. Talking to an actual agent got everything cleared up and I got my check about 9 days later. Seriously saved my sanity!

100% real. I was super skeptical too, but I was desperate after calling the IRS non-stop and getting nowhere. It was the only way I could talk to a live agent and got my situation resolved in one call.

How does it work? Do they just call for you?

0 coins

Pretty much. They navigate all the phone menus and hold times, then when they reach a point where an agent is about to pick up, they call you and connect you. I was surprised it actually worked but it did!

sounds like something the irs should provide for free tbh... but with how understaffed they are I guess this is where we're at 🤷‍♀️

Right? In a perfect world we wouldn't need workarounds like this, but after trying for weeks on my own, I was just glad to find something that actually worked.

Same exact thing happened to me last year!!! It's because TurboTax creates temp accounts for those advances. In my case, my refund bounced back to the IRS and they mailed me a paper check about 3 weeks later. I'd recommend watching your mailbox closely. If nothing shows up in 2 more weeks, then start hitting the phones hard.

The problem is that there's two different account numbers at play. When you get a refund advance through TurboTax/Credit Karma, they set up a temporary account to process that advance. Then when the actual IRS refund comes through, it's supposed to go to your real bank account. But sometimes the temporary account number gets submitted to the IRS instead of your real one. Did you get the full amount of your tax advance? Or just a partial advance? That might give a clue about what happened.

I got a partial advance of $750 when I filed, but my actual refund is supposed to be $4,278. I'm just worried that the rest is lost somewhere in the void now.

Your refund isn't lost, but it'll take some work to track it down. If it went to that temp account, it'll bounce back to IRS eventually and they'll mail a check. The system is frustrating but it does usually work itself out... eventually 😑

I had this EXACT issue with TurboTax last year when I got a refund advance. What happened was TurboTax created a temporary bank account to give me the advance, then that temp account number got submitted to the IRS instead of my actual checking account. My refund got sent to the temp account, bounced back to the IRS, and then they mailed me a paper check about 25 days later. Super annoying but I did get my money eventually.

That makes me feel better at least. Did you have to do anything or did the system just fix itself?

0 coins

-

Ella Russell

The system technically fixed itself but I spent hours calling the IRS to figure out what was happening. If I had to do it again, I'd use one of those services others mentioned to get someone on the phone faster. The waiting and uncertainty was the worst part.

This is why I stopped using TurboTax 2 years ago. Too many horror stories like this. Try Credit Karma Tax directly next time (not through TurboTax) or FreeTaxUSA. I've never had issues with either one.

Have you tried checking your account transcript from the IRS website? It might show if the direct deposit was rejected and if they're issuing a paper check instead. Go to irs.gov, make an account, and look at your 2023 Account Transcript. Look for code 846 (refund issued) and then see if there's any codes after that which might indicate a problem.

-

Benjamin Johnson

I tried looking at my transcript but all those codes are so confusing. I see the 846 with the refund amount but don't know what anything else means. It's like trying to read hieroglyphics 🤯

Check out taxr.ai - it translates all those codes into English. Saved me so much frustration when I was in your position last month. It told me exactly what was happening with my refund when it got sent to the wrong account.

^^^^ This. I was about to suggest something similar. Those transcript codes are impossible to figure out on your own.

the advance is a seperate thing from your refund. Turbotax partners with a bank to give you an advance based on your EXPECTED refund. The actual refund still needs to go to your actual bank account. Sounds like the advance worked but your actual refund account info got messed up. You need to call IRS directly, no way around it.

Hey so I work at a bank (not giving financial advice just explaining the process). What happens with refund advances is that TurboTax/Credit Karma sets up a temporary account at their partner bank. When you get the advance, it comes from that account. Then when the IRS sends your actual refund, it's supposed to go to that temporary account FIRST, where they recover the advance amount they gave you, then forward the rest to your personal account. Sounds like in your case, the refund went to the temp account but then something went wrong with the transfer to your personal account. Could be wrong info or a system glitch. Either way, the money should eventually make its way back to the IRS who will then mail you a check.

Thank you for explaining! That makes so much more sense now. How long would you expect before I get the check?

In my experience, once a direct deposit is rejected, it usually takes the IRS 3-4 weeks to process a paper check. So I'd start looking for it around early November. If nothing by mid-November, definitely call them.

turbotax is garbage. they do shady stuff like this ALL the time. next year use freetaxusa.

THIS. TurboTax lobbies against making taxes easier just so they can keep charging people. And then they pull stuff like this with the account numbers.

Update to everyone who suggested the taxr.ai site: I just tried it and holy crap, it actually translated my transcript and showed me exactly what happened! Apparently my refund DID go to the wrong account on October 6, but it was rejected on October 9th. According to the explanation, the IRS is now processing a paper check that should mail out next week. This is WAY more info than I was able to figure out on my own from looking at the transcript. Thank you!!!

lol welcome to tax season hell. same thing happened to me. took a month to get my check in the mail after it went to wrong account. the IRS is like that ex who says they'll call but never does. just wait it out or use claimyr to actually get someone on the phone.

Just FYI - this is EXACTLY why i never do the refund advances. They always seem to cause problems like this. Maybe you'll get lucky and have it workout quickly but you might be looking at a paper check in a few weeks.

yep, those advances are basically loans with extra steps. and they always seem to mess up the actual refund deposit
