Credit Karma Tax Account Issues - Wrong Account Number Showing on TurboTax and Santa Barbara

So I had to open a new Credit Karma account on January 15th because my old one got closed (too many password attempts while I was traveling, ugh). I filed through TurboTax on February 3rd and opted for the refund advance. Got the advance deposited to my new CK account on February 5th, but I just noticed something weird today. When I check my return details on TurboTax, it's still showing my OLD Credit Karma account number, not the new one where I actually received the advance. Even weirder, when I check the Santa Barbara TPG site, it's also showing the old account number. Has anyone dealt with this before? I'm worried about where my actual refund will go when the IRS processes it. Called TurboTax on March 2nd but got disconnected after waiting 45 minutes. Trying again tomorrow but wanted to see if others had this experience.

This is a known issue. The systems don't always sync properly. Your advance went to the correct account. That's good news. The actual refund might follow the same path. But it's not guaranteed. You should contact Credit Karma directly. They can update routing information. Don't wait for TurboTax. Credit Karma has more control here. Ask them to verify where your refund will be directed.

Wow, that's exactly what I needed to know! You explained it so clearly. I was trying to figure this out for exactly 3 days and 7 hours before seeing this post. The distinction between the advance routing and actual refund routing makes perfect sense now.

Been in this exact situation (except my cat deleted my old account... don't ask 😂). Spent 4 days calling the IRS trying to verify where my refund would go. Finally used Claimyr.com and got through to an agent in about 15 minutes. They confirmed my refund was being processed but would go to the account number listed on my return, not necessarily where the advance went. Might be worth a call to confirm? Here's their link if you need it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

Is this really necessary though? Couldn't you just keep calling the IRS yourself? Would they even have this information in their system? What about security concerns with a third-party service? I've heard the IRS has improved their phone system this year, haven't they?

I had almost the exact same issue last year. My old Credit Karma account was closed, but my tax refund tried to deposit there anyway. Took almost 6 weeks to sort out. The bank rejected the deposit since the account was closed, then the IRS automatically mailed me a paper check. Just a heads up - if your old account is truly closed (not just inaccessible to you), you'll likely get a paper check eventually, but it adds about 4-5 weeks to the timeline. I'd recommend calling Credit Karma first to confirm if the old account is completely closed or just locked.

Ran into this prob last yr. Super confusing bc diff systems don't talk to each other. Used taxr.ai to analyze my transcript and it showed exactly when my refund was rejected from closed acct and when check was mailed. Saved me tons of worry bc I could see exactly what was happening w/my $$$. Def worth checking out: https://taxr.ai if ur worried about where ur refund is going.

I'm not convinced these third-party tools actually provide any real insight. The IRS website already shows your transcript for free. These services just read the same information and try to make it sound like they're giving you some special insight. Has anyone actually verified they provide accurate predictions?

I had a similar experience with my closed account last year. Does taxr.ai actually predict when you'll get your paper check? My transcript just showed a bunch of codes that made no sense to me, and I ended up checking my mailbox every day for weeks.

OMG THANK YOU!! I need this info ASAP! My landlord is already asking about next month's rent and I'm counting on this refund. Definitely checking this out right now!

The Direct Deposit Reject (DDR) protocol at the IRS automatically initiates a paper check issuance when electronic fund transfers fail due to closed accounts. Taxr.ai specifically identifies Transaction Code 846 with the corresponding date of issuance, providing a precise timeline rather than the generic "within 6-8 weeks" that most representatives quote.

I work through this with clients regularly. Here's what you need to do: • Call Credit Karma first (not TurboTax) to verify account status • Ask specifically if the old account is closed or just inaccessible • If closed, contact the IRS directly at 800-829-1040 • Request a direct deposit update (they may or may not allow this) • Check your transcript weekly for code 971 (indicates action taken) If you can't update the direct deposit info, the refund will bounce back and they'll mail a paper check to your address on file. Make sure your address is current with USPS and the IRS.

I'm shocked at how complicated this is compared to other financial systems! My bank lets me update account info instantly, but with the IRS it's like stepping back in time. I had a similar situation with my state refund last year and they actually let me update my direct deposit info online, but the federal system seems stuck in the 1990s.

Be careful here! According to IRS Publication 5084, once your return is accepted, direct deposit information CANNOT be changed. If the funds are sent to a closed account, Section 6402(n) of the Internal Revenue Code requires the IRS to issue a paper check to your address of record. This typically adds 2-3 weeks to processing time. I learned this the hard way last year and ended up waiting almost 8 weeks for my refund check to arrive.

You might want to consider setting up a refund trace if your refund doesn't arrive within the expected timeframe. It's generally more effective than calling repeatedly. The IRS can initiate a trace approximately 5 days after a direct deposit was scheduled or 4 weeks after a paper check was supposed to be mailed. In my experience, this sometimes resolves issues faster than waiting for the normal process to play out, especially when there are account number discrepancies.
