TurboTax Refund Advance Account Number Issue - Need to Update for Remaining Refund?
Filed thru TurboTax & opted for refund advance to Credit Karma acct. Rcvd identity verification ltr which we completed, but noticed acct # was 1-2 digits off. Confused bc didn't manually enter acct info - TT auto-pulled Credit Karma details. Already rcvd $4000 to Credit Karma, so acct # must've been correct initially. Should we contact IRS to update acct info for remainder of refund? Don't want to delay remaining funds due to clerical error.

This is a common issue with split refund disbursements. When you receive a refund advance through TurboTax/Credit Karma, the initial advance portion ($4000) is processed through their internal systems, while the remainder comes directly from the IRS Treasury. The account verification error likely occurred during the secondary transmission of your banking details to the IRS systems. I experienced similar relief when discovering this was just a data transmission issue rather than identity theft or fraud concerns.

I'm somewhat confused about how this works - if TurboTax sent the information to the IRS, wouldn't it all be the same data? Or does the IRS possibly modify the information during processing?

Isn't it strange that the systems don't talk to each other properly? Why would the IRS have different account information than what TurboTax submitted in the first place?

Have you tried checking your tax transcript online? That might show if there's any issue with the remaining refund processing. Also, did the identity verification letter specifically mention the account number discrepancy or did you just notice it on the letter? I'd definitely call them to update - wrong account numbers can cause major delays or even refund offsets in some cases.

I had a similar situation last year with H&R Block's refund advance. In my case, the account numbers didn't match because H&R Block uses a temporary account for the advance portion, while the IRS sends the remainder to your actual bank. When I compared the numbers on my transcript to my banking info, they were completely different systems - not just 1-2 digits off.

Just to clarify - when you call the IRS about this, you need your exact refund amount, filing status, and the last 4 digits of both the incorrect and correct account numbers. I had to wait exactly 43 minutes on hold, but they fixed my account number in about 5 minutes once I got through.

Think of this like a relay race where the baton (your banking info) gets slightly changed during the handoff. TurboTax had the right info for their portion, but when passing it to the IRS, something got transcribed incorrectly. I've seen this happen multiple times - it's fixable but you need to be proactive about it.

I had this EXACT issue on March 8th with my TurboTax/Credit Karma refund. Spent 3 days trying to reach the IRS with no luck - busy signals and disconnects. Finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) on March 11th and got through to an agent in about 15 minutes who updated my banking info. My remaining refund was deposited correctly on March 18th. Just wanted to share since I was so anxious about losing my refund!

Is that service legit? I need my $ ASAP and can't wait weeks for a check in the mail if they have the wrong account #. My concerns: • Is it safe? • How much does it cost? • Will the IRS actually update the info or just tell me to wait? I'm already behind on rent and need this resolved yesterday!

I work with tax clients and see this frequently with refund advances. Here's what happened: 1. TurboTax creates a temporary bank account for your advance ($4000) 2. They correctly sent that temporary account info to Credit Karma 3. For the remaining refund, they should have sent your actual bank details to the IRS 4. Somewhere in this process, digits were transposed You should absolutely call the IRS at 800-829-1040. When you get through, request a direct deposit update. They can change the account number while the refund is still processing. If it's already been sent to the wrong account, they'll have to issue a paper check instead, which takes 4-6 weeks.

I wouldn't wait on this. Last year I had a similar issue and thought it would resolve itself. Big mistake. The remaining refund bounced back from the incorrect account, then took 9 additional weeks to get a paper check. I'd recommend using the Where's My Refund tool first to see the status - if it says "sent" already, you're likely looking at a paper check situation. If it's still processing, call immediately to update the account info.

Oh gosh, this happens more than you'd think! The community wisdom here is pretty consistent: call the IRS ASAP. Here's why: if the refund attempts to deposit to an invalid account, it will return to the IRS and they'll mail a paper check automatically, but that adds 4-6 weeks to your wait time. If you catch it before the direct deposit attempt, they can update your account number in their system! I've helped several friends through this exact situation - it's totally fixable but time-sensitive. ❤️
