$10,738 Refund Status Changed from "Delivery" to "Pending" on TurboTax on Expected Deposit Day (May 12) - Filed January 20, Will I Still Get My Money?
I filed my taxes through TurboTax on January 20th and the IRS accepted my return the same day. My refund amount is $10,738 and my direct deposit was supposed to hit my account today (May 12th). I just checked the TurboTax app and noticed my status changed from "refund delivery" to "pending" with no explanation! When I checked the app, this is exactly what I see: $10,738 E-filed Pending Refund delivery It shows "Return received by IRS" on 01/20 with the $10,738 amount. There's also a message saying "We could not expedite your refund. No early refund fee was charged." I can see options to "see fees deducted" and "Download return" in the app. There's also a "Where's my refund?" section that says "You can start tracking your refund after we notify you that your federal return has been accepted." I bank with Chime and was counting on this money. Has anyone experienced this status change right when they were supposed to get their refund? Does this mean there's a problem or delay? The app clearly showed "Refund delivery" before and now it's suddenly "Pending" after months of waiting! Will I still get my money?? I'm freaking out right now 😠This is a huge amount of money for me and I've been waiting since January! Why would it change to pending on the exact day I was supposed to receive it?

This is actually normal and happens quite often when refunds are about to be sent. The "pending" status typically means the IRS has approved your refund and is in the process of sending the funds to your bank. The status in the TurboTax app is separate from the actual IRS processing. I would recommend checking the official "Where's My Refund" tool on the IRS website (https://www.irs.gov/refunds) for the most accurate status. If that shows your refund is approved, you're fine. Also, even though the date was estimated for today, it can sometimes take 1-3 additional business days for the bank to process the deposit, especially with larger refund amounts over $10k. Chime usually posts deposits early, but there can still be delays with IRS refunds. I wouldn't worry yet - give it until the end of the week before contacting anyone.

Can confirm what they said. My status changed to pending right before direct deposit hit last year. Got my money like 2 days later.

I was wondering about this too. Mine also shows pending but wmr says approved. waiting is the worst part!

Yeah the IRS and banks never seem to communicate well. The good news is that once it shows approved on WMR, you're basically guarenteed to get it, just a matter of when. The system is slow but reliable at least!

I was in the exact same position as you last month! Driving myself crazy trying to figure out what all the status changes meant. Finally found this tool called taxr.ai that actually explained everything on my transcript in plain English and predicted exactly when my refund would arrive. Saved me so much stress from the guessing game. It's insanely good! I use it every week now just to keep an eye on things. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It's literally life changing! It reads your transcript but then explains EVERY code and entry in normal human language. It told me exactly why my refund was delayed (some verification thing) and predicted the exact day I'd get paid. No more detective work trying to interpret those cryptic codes. I tell everyone I know about it now because the IRS makes everything so unnecessarily complicated.

another tax service promising the moon? how is this any different from the 800 other tax tools out there? 🤔

This is the only one I've found that actually explains your specific transcript in detail. Not generic advice. It shows you exactly what's happening with YOUR refund and what each code means for YOU. Total game changer - I was skeptical too but it saved me hours of googling and anxiety.

After dealing with this exact problem and getting nowhere for weeks, I finally used a calling service called Claimyr to get through to an actual IRS agent (claimyr.com). The agent confirmed my refund was approved but got flagged for additional review because of the amount. After she cleared it, my money showed up 2 days later. Talking to a real person was the only way I got this resolved - best investment I ever made after weeks of frustration! The agent told me large refunds often get additional review even when everything is correct.

Wait, so this actually works? I've been trying to reach someone at the IRS for almost a month. On hold forever then disconnected 😡

Yes! They basically wait on hold for you then call when an agent picks up. Saved me literally hours of hold time. The agent I talked to fixed my issue in about 10 minutes once I explained everything.

How long did it take to get a callback? The IRS is impossible to reach these days

Got my callback in about 1.5 hours. Way better than the 3+ hours I spent trying on my own multiple times. They also told me exactly what to say to the agent which helped a lot.

I bank with Chime and had this happen. TurboTax app is super glitchy - try logging out completely, clearing cache/cookies, and logging back in. Sometimes the status doesn't update correctly. Mine showed pending for days then suddenly updated to show it had already been deposited (which it had). The TT app is not connected directly to IRS systems in real-time.

Refunds over $10k often get additional security screening. I learned this the hard way last year. My refund was about $11,300 and got held up for an extra 10 days for "verification" even though nothing was wrong with my return. Just be patient, large refunds take longer.

My sister had a 15k refund and it took almost a month longer than my small refund even though we filed on the same day.

The IRS treats larger refunds differently because of fraud concerns. They don't advertise this but it's definitely a thing. They have special review processes for refunds over certain thresholds.

The TurboTax app is TRASH for status updates. Always check the actual IRS website. TurboTax just guesses half the time and causes unnecessary panic. I've had mine show "pending" when the money was already in my account 🤡

I work in banking (not for Chime). Large deposits sometimes trigger additional verification steps, especially from government sources. If your refund is over $10k, it might be held for 24-48 hours for verification before posting to your account. This is standard anti-fraud procedure. Nothing to worry about but might cause a slight delay.

Call the IRS!!!! Don't just wait. I had something similar happen and it turned out there was a problem with my direct deposit info. The sooner you call, the sooner you can fix any issues. The number is 1-800-829-1040 but good luck getting through...

Chime has been having some issues with large deposits lately. My sister had a similar situation where her tax refund was delayed by 2 days even after the IRS sent it. Chime's fraud department sometimes holds larger deposits for review. You might want to contact Chime's customer service to see if they're holding it.

If your direct deposit date was today but status changed to pending, it could mean its being routed through the Bureau of Fiscal Service for verification. This is super common with refunds over 10k and often happens at the last minute. My wifes refund went through this last year and arrived 4 business days after the original date. Its annoying but normal.

I've seen this exact issue come up in multiple Facebook groups I'm in. It seems TurboTax has a glitch in their system right now that's affecting status displays. Several people reported the pending status right before their deposits hit. Don't rely on TurboTax for status - use the IRS where's my refund tool instead!

Check your transcript!!!! The WMR tool can be wrong. Only your transcript will show the real status and if there are any holds or verification codes. I learned this the hard way after waiting weeks for a refund that was never coming because of an audit code I didn't know about.

Anyone else notice that TurboTax status updates have been super unreliable this year? Mine kept bouncing back and forth between different messages for weeks. The IRS Where's My Refund tool is the only one you should trust. Don't panic yet OP.

Do you have an amended return or offsets? Child support? Student loans? Back taxes? Any of these could cause your refund to be reduced or redirected at the last minute. If so, the pending status might mean they're adjusting your refund amount.

Yara Sayegh
No, none of those. This is a straight return, no amendments or debts that would offset it. That's why I'm confused about the status change.

I was in EXACTLY your position two weeks ago with almost same amount ($12k refund). After stressing for days, I finally used taxr.ai to analyze my transcript - turns out I had a random verification flag that wasn't even visible on Where's My Refund! The tool gave me a new expected date and sure enough the money arrived exactly on that day. Saved me so much stress when I could actually understand what was happening instead of guessing. https://taxr.ai

Total game changer. Not only explains every code but tells you what each one means for YOUR specific situation and gives you an actual timeline. Most of these codes don't mean the same thing for everyone - depends on the combination. It's basically like having an IRS translator. I literally check it weekly now just for peace of mind.

I'm a tax preparer and I see this all the time. TT's status updates are notoriously inaccurate. It's most likely that your refund is just moving from one processing stage to another in the IRS system. As long as WMR shows approved, you're good. The fact that you bank with Chime is actually a good thing - they typically post deposits faster than traditional banks once they receive the funds.

For what its worth, I finally got thru to the IRS after trying for literally weeks with that stupid automated system that keeps hanging up. I found this service called Claimyr that got me connected to an agent in about an hour. The agent told me that refunds over $10k automatically get additional review which can add a few days. Nothing to worry about if your return is legitimate. Just sharing in case you want to verify directly with IRS! their site is claimyr.com

Happens every year 🙄 The status means nothing, they use the same generic messages for everything. Last year mine said "still processing" the day AFTER it hit my account lol. Just wait a couple more days before panicking.

Double-check your bank account info on your return. My friend had this happen and it turned out she had one digit wrong in her account number. Her refund got sent back to the IRS and she had to request a paper check which took 6 more weeks. Hopefully that's not your situation but worth checking!
