Am I the only one annoyed that the IRS can just hold our money for months with no explanation or timeline? Like we'd be hit with penalties immediately if we were late paying them, but they can just sit on our refunds forever? The system is broken af š
The IRS has a special number for resolving issues like this: 1-800-829-1040. Good luck getting through though, I spent WEEKS trying. Finally used claimyr.com and had an agent on the phone same day who confirmed it was a substitute return situation. The agent helped me understand exactly what I needed to do to fix it. Totally worth it considering how much money was at stake.
Is this the thing where they wait on hold for you and then call you back? My cousin mentioned something similar
Yep exactly! They navigate the phone system and wait on hold, then call you when an agent is available. Saved me hours of frustration.
yoooo i had almost the EXACT same issue. the irs filed a SFR for 2018 saying i owed like $7k. turns out when u don't file they just make up numbers that benefit them not u. after i filed properly it dropped to like $600 which i could manage. def do not ignore this!! it won't go away and will just get worse with penalties and interest
I don't want to freak you out, but we had this happen at our office and YES, many of our other clients had their refunds delayed. About 30% of our clients had to go through additional identity verification, and about 10 had their refunds held completely pending review. It was a complete nightmare that lasted almost the entire tax season. We ended up having to compensate some clients for the delays.
This literally happened to me with TWO clients last year. I was FREAKING OUT. Called the IRS taxpayer advocate service but was on hold for like 5 hours before getting disconnected. Finally used Claimyr.com to get a callback from an actual competent agent who helped me through the whole process. They had me submit documentation proving the clients authorized the returns, and actually expedited verification for my other clients so their refunds wouldn't be delayed too long. Talking to that agent directly instead of waiting weeks for letters was the only way I got this resolved quickly.
Yes but it was worth every penny to get immediate help rather than spending weeks in bureaucratic hell. The IRS agent I spoke with knew exactly what to do with my situation.
whatever you do, DONT CALL THE IRS ABOUT THIS YET. they wont do anything until 5 business days have passed since your deposit date. just wait until next week, it'll probably show up. the system is just backed up.

i spent 3 months freaking out over my 810 code until i finally broke down and tried taxr.ai - it analyzed my transcript and told me EXACTLY what was happening, why i had the freeze, and when it would likely be resolved based on similar cases. totally worth it just for the peace of mind of finally understanding what was going on instead of stressing every day.

ā¢i tried it too and it was spot on. showed me my exact issue (missing 1099 from stock sales) that was causing my delay, which the IRS never bothered to tell me about directly.

unpopular opinion but you probably should have been more careful when filing your taxes... the IRS gets copies of all your W2s so its not like they're making this up. double check your stuff next time and you won't have these issues.

ā¢This is such a privileged take. Some people work multiple jobs or gigs and documentation can fall through the cracks. The punishment (holding refunds for months) doesn't fit the crime (forgetting to report small amounts of income).

ā¢Fair points. I guess I was being a bit harsh. The system is definitely broken in how it handles these small discrepancies.
