Went through ID verification process with IRS last month, now have code 846 showing on transcript

So I decided to check on my refund status after completing ID verification with the IRS about 3 weeks ago. I was getting really anxious since I filed back in early February and hadn't heard anything for months until they sent me a letter asking to verify my identity. Today I logged into the transcript system and noticed a new 846 code appeared sometime this week. Does this mean my refund is finally on the way? How long after seeing this code did people actually receive their money? This whole process has been so frustrating.

Jessica Nguyen

Yes, code 846 means your refund has been approved and is scheduled for release. The date next to the 846 code is when the refund will be issued. Most people receive direct deposits within 1-5 business days after that date. If you're getting a paper check, it could take 1-3 weeks to arrive in the mail. The good news is that once you see that 846 code, your refund is definitely coming! Congrats on getting through the verification process - many people get stuck there for months.

Thank you! The date says 05/15/2025, which is next Wednesday. I did choose direct deposit so hopefully it hits my account soon.

u might even get it earlier than the date shown. mine posted to my bank 2 days before the 846 date!

That would be amazing! I've been waiting so long that I'm just happy to see movement at this point

I was in the exact same situation a few months back. Getting through the verification maze felt impossible until I tried taxr.ai - totally changed the game for me. It analyzed my transcript, explained all the codes, and gave me a clear timeline for my refund. So much easier than trying to figure it all out myself or waiting on hold with the IRS for hours. Seriously check out https://taxr.ai if you're confused about anything on your transcript. It's insanely good! I use it every week.

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does WAY more than just reading the transcript. It explains every code in plain English, shows you exactly what's happening with your return, predicts when you'll get your refund, and can even help identify issues before they become problems. You can ask it specific questions too. Literally saved me hours of research and stress.

Just tried it and WOW. Where has this been all my life?? It answered questions I didn't even know I had about my transcript. Everyone dealing with the IRS needs to know about this tool!

Not an ad, just someone who's been through the IRS nightmare and found something that actually helped. Try it yourself if you're skeptical.

After I got my ID verification letter, I was STUCK in processing hell for like 2 months. I finally got tired of checking WMR every day and used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual IRS agent. Got a callback within an hour and the agent was able to push my return through. My 846 code showed up just 3 days later. Best money I've ever spent to finally get my questions answered and refund released.

wait does this actually work? i've been trying to reach someone at the IRS for weeks...

100% works. I was super skeptical too but was desperate after trying to call myself for days and never getting through. The service basically navigates all the IRS phone prompts and holds your place in line, then calls you when an agent is available. Saved me literally hours of my life on hold.

The catch is that talking to an actual human at the IRS shouldn't be this hard in the first place lol. But it worked for me when nothing else did.

846 is the beautiful refund issued code we all dream of seeing! Congrats, your wait is almost over. ID verification really slows things down - took me 9 weeks after verification to see that magical 846.

This happened to me too. Got a letter asking to verify ID in march, did it online right away, then nothing for weeks. Finally got my 846 code in late April and the money hit my account 2 days later. The IRS is such a mess this year.

Anyone else notice that ppl who verify identity seem to get processed faster than regular returns? My friend verified in march and got paid in april. I filed in january and STILL waiting with no update. The whole system is backwards.

I think it depends on why you had to verify. If they flagged your return for verification, resolving that might put you on a faster track once cleared. I waited 4 months after verifying tho so definitely not always faster

That's not my experience at all. Had to verify and then waited 3 additional months. Meanwhile my spouse filed later with no verification and got theirs in 3 weeks. Total crapshoot.

Congrats!! šŸŽ‰ 846 is the promised land of IRS codes. You're almost there! Quick tip - if your bank sometimes holds deposits, call them to make sure they won't hold your tax refund. Some banks put automatic holds on large deposits and that can delay access to your $$.

I'm on day 83 after ID verification and still no 846. This gives me hope but I'm also FURIOUS. Why do some people wait weeks and others wait months? It makes NO sense.

Have you tried calling them? I was stuck for 2 months after verification then finally got through on the phone and suddenly had my refund a week later. Suspicious timing if you ask me...

Try Claimyr.com - they'll get you through to an agent. It's the only way I could finally talk to someone at the IRS about my delayed refund.

Here's a detailed breakdown of what happens after code 846 appears: ā€¢ Direct Deposit: Usually hits your account within 1-5 business days after the 846 date ā€¢ Paper Check: Can take 1-3 weeks to arrive by mail ā€¢ Tax Topic 152: If you see this on Where's My Refund, it's a good sign! ā€¢ Partial Refunds: If you owe any federal/state debts, child support, etc., your refund might be less than expected ā€¢ Bank Rejections: Sometimes refunds get sent back to IRS if account info was incorrect The ID verification process was created to combat refund fraud but it's become a major bottleneck in the system. Glad to see you're through it and about to get your money! For anyone else dealing with transcript confusion or delays, taxr.ai is an amazing resource - saved me hours of frustration trying to decipher all these codes and predict my refund timing. https://taxr.ai

Solid advice! One more tip - if your refund is significantly different from what you expected, you can request a transcript of account to see if they made adjustments.

LOL at everyone celebrating the bare minimum. The IRS holding our money for months, making us jump through hoops, and then we're supposed to be grateful when they finally do what they should have done in February? Stockholm syndrome fr šŸ˜‚

-

THIS!!! And then they don't even pay us interest for all the months they've been using our money! The system is so broken.

actualy they do pay interest if its been more than 45 days since filing. check your transcript for code 776, thats interest

After struggling with my transcript for weeks and trying to figure out what all the codes meant, I finally checked out taxr.ai that someone recommended here. It was literally life-changing - explained everything in simple terms and gave me a clear understanding of my situation. Highly recommend to anyone confused about their transcript or refund status.

The difference is that it actually works! It's not just generic info - it looks at YOUR specific transcript and breaks everything down. I was about to pay a tax pro $200 to explain my transcript but this did it instantly.

Did anybody get a different refund amount than what they were expecting? My 846 showed up today but the amount is about $340 less than what I calculated.

Look for a 971 code on your transcript - that's usually a notice explaining adjustments. They probably made a change to your return.

I do see a 971 from last week. Guess I'll have to wait for the notice in the mail to find out what they changed šŸ™„

You can use taxr.ai to understand the changes they made - it explains all the transcript codes and adjustments without waiting for snail mail.
