UPDATE FINALLY GOT MY TRANSCRIPT WITH 846 CODE. IS THIS GOOD? Need someone to explain what this means!

Just checked my 2024 tax transcript online and saw the 846 code finally appeared! I've been checking the Where's My Refund tool daily for weeks with no updates. Got frustrated and decided to create an IRS account to view my actual transcript. Now I see code 846 with a date next to it. Can someone tell me if this is good news and when I should expect my refund to actually hit my bank account? I'm supposed to get about $3,700 back and I've been waiting since I filed in early February. Really need this money to pay off some credit cards.

Great news! Code 846 is the "refund issued" code, which means your refund has been approved and scheduled for direct deposit or check mailing. The date listed next to the 846 code is when the IRS scheduled your refund to be sent to your bank or when they mailed the check. If you're getting direct deposit, most banks post the funds within 1-5 business days after the date shown. Some banks might make it available immediately, while others might hold it for a day or two. If you're getting a paper check, add about 7-10 days for mail delivery.

So does this mean the IRS already sent the money to their bank on that date or they're planning to send it on that date? My transcript shows 846 with a date that's still 2 days away and I'm confused.

The date next to code 846 is when the IRS is scheduled to release the payment to your bank or mail your check. It's the "send date," not necessarily when you'll have access to funds. If your date is still 2 days away, the IRS hasn't sent the money yet but has scheduled it to go out on that date. Some banks occasionally release funds early if they can see the pending deposit, but most wait until they actually receive the money from the IRS.

I was in the exact same situation last month—Where's My Refund stuck on "still processing" forever while my transcript already showed code 846. I was going crazy checking both daily until I found taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai). It actually explains your transcript codes and gives you a much more accurate timeline than the IRS tools. The site helped me understand that my 846 code meant my money was already on the way despite WMR not updating. It also explained some other weird codes on my transcript I didn't understand. The money hit my account exactly when taxr.ai predicted it would, about 2 days after the date on my transcript. Was such a relief to actually understand what was happening instead of being in the dark.

Does this taxr thing actually work better than the official IRS site? I've been checking WMR for weeks and nothing has changed but I'm afraid to create an account on the IRS site to check my transcript because I heard it's complicated.

How much do they charge? I'm already waiting on a refund so not exactly flush with cash right now lol.

It definitely worked better than the IRS site for me. The WMR tool is super basic and doesn't give you any real details. Taxr.ai actually reads all the codes on your transcript and explains exactly what's happening with your return. It even caught a potential problem with my withholding that might have triggered a review. The service doesn't charge anything to check your basic refund status and transcript explanation. They have some premium features but I just used the free analysis and it told me everything I needed to know. Way more detailed than anything the IRS site shows.

Just wanted to update that I tried taxr.ai after posting my question and wow - it was super helpful! I was nervous about creating an IRS account but the site walked me through downloading my transcript and then explained all these codes I never would have understood. My 846 code had yesterday's date on it and the site said I should see my refund within 48 hours. Just checked my bank account and the money is already there! WMR STILL shows processing even though I already got paid lol.

If you're still having trouble getting actual answers from the IRS, try using Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). It's this service that gets you through to an actual IRS agent on the phone instead of waiting on hold for hours. I was in refund limbo last month with a 570 code before getting my 846, and I needed to talk to someone. Used their service and was talking to a real IRS person in about 20 minutes instead of the 3+ hours I spent on previous attempts. The agent confirmed exactly when my refund would be deposited and explained why it was delayed. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c. Seriously saved my sanity after weeks of uncertainty.

How does this even work? The IRS phone lines are a disaster. I tried calling about my missing refund last week and literally couldn't get through at all.

Yeah right. No way this actually works. The IRS doesn't have some secret phone line for people who pay a service. They're understaffed and overwhelmed. Sounds like a scam to me.

It works by using their call technology to navigate the IRS phone system and secure your place in line without you having to sit there listening to hold music. Once they reach an agent, they call you and connect you directly. It's not a secret line - it's the same IRS number everyone uses, but their system handles the waiting part. It's definitely not a scam. The IRS is absolutely understaffed, that's why it's so hard to get through. Claimyr just handles the hold time for you. I was skeptical too until I tried it. The IRS agent I spoke with was super helpful and cleared up my 570 code issue right away. Found out they just needed to verify my identity, and I got my 846 code the next day.

Ok I'm back to eat my words. After a week of getting nowhere with the IRS hotline I finally broke down and tried Claimyr. I was talking to an actual IRS agent in like 25 minutes. Turns out my refund was held up because they had a question about my child tax credit claim. The agent helped me verify everything right there on the phone and told me I should see the 846 code appear within 48 hours. Just checked this morning and it's there! Would have been stuck in review for who knows how long if I hadn't called. Definitely worth it to finally get some actual answers instead of the vague "still processing" message.

When you see code 846 on your transcript, your refund is basically guaranteed at that point. The IRS doesn't assign that code until they've completed all reviews and approved the refund for payment. The date beside it is when they send it, not when you'll get it. I've noticed WMR usually updates a day or two AFTER the money is already in my account lol. The IRS systems don't talk to each other very well. I wouldn't even bother checking WMR anymore once you see code 846 on your transcript - just watch your bank account.

Are there any other codes we should be looking for? My transcript has like 20 different codes and numbers and I have no idea what most of them mean.

The main codes people watch for are: 570 (refund hold/review), 971 (notice issued), 420 (audit), and 846 (refund issued). Code 846 is the one you want to see - it means you're done and getting paid. Most of the other codes are just processing steps. If you see 570 without 846, that means there's some kind of review happening. But once 846 appears, you're good to go regardless of what other codes are there.

Does anyone know if the deposit date next to code 846 means it will come at midnight or could it be anytime that day? My 846 date is tomorrow and I'm wondering if I should stay up to see if it hits at midnight or not bother.

It depends on your bank. The IRS sends the payment files to banks in batches throughout the day. Some banks process deposits immediately, others only process them once per day. My credit union always posts government deposits around 3am the day they're scheduled, while my friend with Chase usually sees her deposits post around 6am.

Thanks for explaining. Just checked at midnight and nothing was there, so I guess I'll just check again in the morning. Keeping my fingers crossed that it comes through by tomorrow!

Mine showed code 846 but with a date that was a week away. Does that mean the IRS is making me wait a whole extra week before sending my money? I've already been waiting for over a month!

0 coins

Yes, the date next to code 846 is when they're scheduling the payment to be released. The IRS processes refunds in batches, and they schedule them based on when your return was processed and approved. It's frustrating to see the 846 code but still have to wait, but at least you know it's definitely coming on that date!

Ugh that's so annoying. But I guess at least I know it's coming for sure now. Thanks for the info!

Congratulations on seeing the 846 code! That's definitely great news - it means your refund has been approved and is scheduled for release. The 846 code is what everyone here waits to see because it's the final step before getting your money. Since you filed in early February and are just now seeing the 846 code, it sounds like your return might have gone through some additional review (pretty common this year). The good news is that once you see 846, the waiting is almost over. For direct deposit, most people see their refund hit their account within 1-3 business days of the date shown next to the 846 code. Some banks are faster than others - credit unions and smaller banks tend to post government deposits pretty quickly, while bigger banks sometimes take an extra day or two. Hope you get that $3,700 soon to tackle those credit cards!

Thanks for the detailed explanation! I'm new to all this transcript stuff and it's really confusing. I filed my taxes for the first time this year and have been so stressed about when I'd get my refund. It's reassuring to hear that the 846 code means it's basically guaranteed now. I have a small local credit union so hopefully they'll post it quickly once the IRS sends it. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences here - makes me feel less alone in this whole process!

The 846 code is absolutely great news! You're basically at the finish line now. That code means the IRS has completed all processing and reviews on your return and has officially approved your refund for payment. Since you mentioned you've been waiting since early February, your return likely went through some additional verification (which has been really common this tax season). But now that you see the 846 code, you can stop worrying - your $3,700 is definitely coming. The date next to the 846 code is when the IRS will send the payment to your bank. Most people with direct deposit see the money in their account within 1-3 business days of that date, though it can vary by bank. Some people even get it the same day if their bank processes deposits quickly. You can stop checking the Where's My Refund tool now - it's notoriously slow to update and often doesn't change until after you've already received your money. Just keep an eye on your bank account around the date shown on your transcript. Congrats on finally getting through the waiting period!

This is such a relief to read! I'm in a similar situation - filed in late January and have been checking WMR obsessively for weeks with no updates. Just got brave enough to check my transcript yesterday and saw the 846 code with a date for next Friday. I was worried something was wrong since it's taken so long, but hearing that additional verification is common this year makes me feel so much better. Thanks for explaining everything so clearly - it really helps to understand what's actually happening instead of just waiting in the dark!

That's fantastic news! Code 846 is exactly what you want to see - it means your refund has been fully approved and is scheduled for payment. You're basically done with the waiting game at this point. Since you filed in early February and are just now seeing the 846 code, your return probably went through additional review or verification (which has been super common this tax season due to fraud prevention measures). But now that you have that 846 code, your $3,700 is guaranteed. The date next to the 846 code is when the IRS will release the payment. For direct deposit, most people see their money within 1-2 business days of that date, though it can vary by bank. Some banks post it the same day, others take up to 3 business days. Pro tip: You can stop checking Where's My Refund now - that tool is notorious for not updating until after people have already received their money. Just watch your bank account around the scheduled date. Hope you get that refund soon to tackle those credit cards!

This is exactly what I needed to hear! I've been so anxious about this whole process and checking WMR multiple times a day like it was going to magically update. It's such a relief to know that the 846 code means I'm finally done with all the waiting and uncertainty. I had no idea that additional reviews were so common this year - that explains why it's taken so much longer than I expected. Really appreciate you taking the time to explain everything so clearly. Can't wait to finally pay off those credit cards and stop stressing about when this money is coming!
