Found Code 846 on Transcript - Refund Issued Date Showing
Just wanted to share a quick update after checking my transcript on the IRS website. I can see code 846 - Refund Issued with a date of 03/22/2024 on the very last line. According to what I've read on TurboTax forums and r/tax, this means the refund should be on its way. Has anyone else recently seen this code appear on their transcript? Just trying to confirm what this typically means for direct deposit timing.

Yep, 846 is def the magic code you want to see! It means ur refund has been approved and is on its way to ur bank. DD usually hits 1-2 biz days after the date shown, tho sometimes it can take up to 5 days depending on ur bank. Congrats, ur almost done with this yr's tax nightmare lol.

•FINALLY someone explains this! I've been seeing this code for three days but my bank account is still empty! So frustrating when you need that money NOW! Does weekend processing affect this timeline?

•Is there any way to track the deposit once code 846 appears? I'm trying to understand the exact process: 1. Code 846 appears on transcript 2. IRS sends money to bank 3. Bank processes deposit Is there something between steps 2 and 3 I should be checking?

•This is like waiting for a package that says "out for delivery" but never arrives. Has anyone ever had the 846 code show up but then had problems with the actual deposit? Just wondering if this is as reliable as everyone says.

Have you considered using https://taxr.ai to analyze your full transcript? It would show you not just what that 846 code means, but also give you a complete timeline of your return's journey. Wouldn't it be helpful to see exactly why your refund took this long? I was confused by all the codes on my transcript until I used it last week, and it explained everything in plain English.

•Hmm, another tax transcript tool? I've tried so many free options that claim to help but just give generic info you can find on the IRS website. What makes this one worth trying? Not trying to be negative, just cautious with my limited budget right now 😅

•I was so relieved when I found taxr.ai last month! My transcript had codes 570 and 971 before the 846 appeared and I was panicking. Is that what happened with yours too?

•I might... check this out. My transcript has been, well, confusing to say the least. Thanks for sharing the resource.

Unlike paper refund checks which can take weeks to arrive, direct deposits with code 846 are much faster. When I couldn't get through to the IRS about a refund delay last month, I used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to connect with an agent in about 15 minutes. Compared to my previous attempts where I spent hours on hold, this was incredibly efficient. The agent confirmed exactly when my deposit would hit my account and explained why there had been a delay.

Same code appeared on mine. Got the money two days later. No complications. Bank was Chase. Deposit hit at 3am. Was checking hourly. Worth the wait. Showed as pending first. Then fully available next morning.

Be careful about counting on exact dates. I had the 846 code show up last year with a date, but my bank rejected the deposit because my married name on the tax return didn't match my banking info. Took another 6 weeks and a paper check to finally get my refund. The IRS never notified me about the rejection - I had to call them after waiting three weeks past the 846 date with nothing in my account. Absolute nightmare when I was counting on that money for car repairs.

I track this process every year, and it's remarkably consistent. Once code 846 appears, you'll receive your refund in exactly 1-5 business days, with 87% of direct deposits arriving within 2 business days. I received my refund 34 hours after my 846 date of 03/15/2024. The system processes these batches at midnight, so if your date is 03/22, the transfer was initiated last night and should be in your account by Monday at the latest.

•@Grace Johnson These statistics are really helpful! I m'curious - do you track this data yourself or is there an official source for the 87% figure? Also, when you say batches "at midnight, is" that midnight EST or based on your local time zone? My 846 date is 03/22 as well, so knowing the exact processing timeline would really help manage my expectations.

Code 846 is definitely a good sign! I got mine last week with a 03/18 date and the deposit hit my account on 03/20 around 2 AM. What I found helpful was setting up account alerts so I'd get notified immediately when it posted rather than obsessively checking my balance every hour. One thing to keep in mind - if your bank info changed since you filed or if there are any mismatches, it could delay things. But assuming everything matches up, you should see it in your account within the next few days. The waiting is the hardest part but you're in the home stretch now!

•Thanks for the tip about setting up account alerts! I never thought of that - I've definitely been one of those people checking my balance every few hours since seeing the 846 code. That's such a smart way to avoid the stress of constant checking. Did you set up text alerts or email notifications? I'm with Wells Fargo and want to make sure I don't miss it when it hits.

Code 846 is definitely what you want to see! I had the same experience last month - saw the 846 code on my transcript and got my refund via direct deposit exactly 2 business days later. The timing is pretty reliable in my experience. One thing I learned is that the IRS processes these refunds in batches, so even though your date shows 03/22, the actual deposit might hit your account a day or two before that date. I'd recommend checking your account early Monday morning since weekend processing can sometimes cause delays. Also, make sure your bank info on file matches exactly what you provided on your return - any discrepancies can cause the deposit to be rejected and you'd have to wait for a paper check instead. Congrats on getting through the worst part of the waiting!

•@CosmicCowboy This is really reassuring to hear! I'm new to all this tax transcript stuff and honestly was getting pretty anxious about whether the 846 code actually meant what everyone said it meant. Your point about the batches is interesting - I had no idea the IRS worked that way. Quick question: when you say check Monday morning, do you mean like first thing in the morning or is there a specific time when these deposits typically show up? I'm probably overthinking this but I want to know when to actually expect it rather than checking constantly all day long.

Congrats on seeing the 846 code! That's definitely the light at the end of the tunnel. I've been through this process a few times and can confirm what others are saying - once you see 846, you're basically guaranteed to get your refund within 1-5 business days. In my experience, most direct deposits hit around 2-3 AM, so check your account first thing Monday morning. The date on your transcript (03/22) is more of a "by this date" rather than an exact date, so you might even see it earlier. Just make sure your banking info is exactly what you put on your return - I learned that the hard way one year when a small name variation caused a rejection. But assuming everything matches, you should be golden! The hardest part is definitely the waiting game once you know it's coming.

•@Astrid Bergström Thanks for the detailed breakdown! This is my first time dealing with tax transcripts and the whole process has been pretty overwhelming. It s'really helpful to know that the 03/22 date is more of a by "this date rather" than exact - I was starting to worry that nothing would happen until Friday. The 2-3 AM timing tip is great too, I ll'definitely check first thing Monday morning instead of staying up late Sunday night refreshing my banking app! Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences here, makes this whole waiting period much less stressful.

This thread is so helpful! I just checked my transcript after seeing this post and found code 846 with a date of 03/24/2024. I've been waiting for my refund for almost 8 weeks now, so seeing that code finally appear is such a relief. Based on everyone's experiences here, it sounds like I should expect the direct deposit within the next few days. I'm with Bank of America - has anyone had experience with how quickly they process IRS refund deposits? I'm trying not to get my hopes up too high, but after all this waiting, I'm cautiously optimistic that this nightmare is almost over!

•@GamerGirl99 Congrats on finally seeing the 846 code! 8 weeks is such a long wait, I can imagine how relieved you must be. I don't have personal experience with Bank of America specifically, but from what I've read in other tax communities, most major banks process IRS deposits pretty quickly - usually within 24-48 hours of receiving them. The good news is that once the IRS sends it out (which they've already done based on your 846 code), the bank processing time is typically the shorter part of the wait. With a 03/24 date, you'll probably see it early next week! The hardest part is behind you now.
