ID Verified for tax refund last week but verification status disappeared - when to expect 846 code?

I completed my ID verification for my tax refund on Monday, and I was super excited to see the "verified" status on the IRS website. But when I checked yesterday, that verification status completely disappeared! No trace of it anywhere. Does anyone know from experience how long it typically takes to get an 846 refund issued code after this happens? I've heard some people say about a week, but I'm getting anxious since the verification status vanished. Anyone else experience this and can share their timeline?

Heather Tyson

Tax resolution specialist here. What you're experiencing is normal. The verification status disappearing usually means your identity verification was successful and your return is now moving to the next stage of processing. Based on current IRS processing times, you can typically expect to see an 846 code (refund issued) within 7-21 days after verification, assuming there are no other issues with your return. The disappearance of the verification status is actually a positive sign - it means you're out of the verification queue and into regular processing. Check your transcript every few days, and you'll likely see a series of codes appear before the 846, such as 570 (additional account action pending) followed by 571 (resolved). If nothing changes after 21 days, then you might want to call the IRS.

Thank you so much for explaining! That makes me feel alot better. I'll keep checking my transcript and hopefully see those codes you mentioned soon.

Not to be a downer but my verification disappeared in April and I didn't get my 846 until July... the IRS is super backed up still. Hopefully yours is faster though!

What exactly does verification look like? I think I'm verified but not sure if I'm looking in the right place on the website.

It depends on which verification system you used. If you used ID.me, you'll see a success message. But once the IRS processes it, that status indicator often disappears. The best indicator is to look at your transcript if you have access to it.

I was in this exact situation last month! Spent hours trying to figure out what was happening with my transcript and why the verification disappeared. Finally found this tool called taxr.ai that completely decoded my transcript and explained exactly what was happening and when I'd get my refund. It was WAY better than randomly posting and hoping for advice - it actually analyzed my specific situation and gave me a clear timeline and explanation. Saved me so much anxiety! https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It's honestly amazing - you upload your transcript and it breaks down EVERY code, explains what's actually happening with your return, gives you a timeline, and even explains what to do next. Saved me like 20 hours of internet research and panic. 100% recommend if you're trying to figure out what's happening with your refund!

Is it safe though? I don't want to upload my personal info to random sites...

I was worried about that too but they don't store your document and the analysis is instant. It literally changed my life during tax season - I was about to lose my mind trying to understand all those weird IRS codes by myself!

After my verification disappeared I was pulling my hair out trying to reach someone at the IRS - impossible! After trying for weeks I found this service called claimyr.com that got me an actual callback from an IRS agent within 2 hours! The agent explained that my verification being removed was actually a good sign and that my refund would be processed within 9 days. Best money I've spent all year considering I was waiting on a $4800 refund!

This sounds too good to be true. The IRS never calls anyone back lol

I was super skeptical too but it actually works! They use some system that navigates the IRS phone tree and holds your place in line. When an agent is available they connect you. It's literally the only way I was able to get a straight answer about my refund.

Dead serious. The callback came in like 2 hours when I had been trying for weeks on my own. Agent was super helpful too. Total gamechanger.

the "verification disappearing" happened to me too!! mine took exactly 8 days after that to get my refund. so don't panic, its actually a good thing!

This IRS system is such a mess. Why can't they just have a simple status tracker that actually tells you what's happening without all these cryptic codes and disappearing statuses? 🤦‍♀️ I'm still waiting on my refund from LAST YEAR.

Every single year it's the same nonsense with the IRS. my verification disappeared too!! I panicked for a week then suddenly got my refund with no warning. The system makes no sense but at least you'll get your money eventually.

That gives me hope! Did you notice any new codes on your transcript before the refund showed up?

TBH i didn't even check my transcript. just woke up one day and the money was in my account lol. But from what i've seen on here, most people get that 846 code a few days before the deposit hits.

If your return had an EIC or Child Tax Credit claim, it could take longer even after verification. They're required by law to hold those until mid-February at the earliest, and then they go through additional screening. Just something to keep in mind depending on what credits you claimed.

I did claim EIC this year. Maybe that's part of what's causing the delay. Thanks for mentioning that.

Can anyone tell me where to find the transcript? I'm verified but I don't know where to look for these codes everyone keeps talking about.

Go to irs.gov > Get Your Tax Record > Get Transcript Online > then log in and look for "Account Transcript" for the tax year you need. That'll show all the codes.

After identity verification it took me exactly 9 days to see the 846 code, and then exactly 7 more days to get the refund in my account. There seems to be a pretty consistent pattern. Hang in there!

I've done taxes for 10+ years and I can tell you with confidence that the verification status disappearing is a good sign. It means you passed verification and your return is now in the normal processing queue. Based on what I've seen this year, expect about 7-14 days until you see that 846 code, assuming there are no other issues with your return.

0 coins

-

Harold Oh

What are the most common other issues that could delay it further?

0 coins

-

20d

Payton Black

Most common issues: income verification discrepancies (W-2 or 1099 info doesn't match what employers reported), math errors that need manual review, claiming credits you don't qualify for, or random selection for additional review. Any of those can add weeks or months to processing time.

i'm pretty sure my return is straightforward - just W2 income and standard deduction plus EIC. Hopefully that means it'll be processed quickly once it's through verification!

The IRS is a joke lmaooo 🤡 They take our money instantly but make us wait months to get our refunds. And the verification system? Complete trash. I got verified then unverified then verified again before finally getting my money. Don't expect anything to make sense.

fr this is why i always adjust my withholding to pay as little as possible during the year. rather owe a small amount than give them an interest-free loan 💯

I faced the exact same situation last month. After my ID verification disappeared, I was desperate to get some answers because I needed that money ASAP. I tried calling the regular IRS number like 20 times but could never get through. Finally found claimyr.com which got me connected to an actual IRS agent who explained everything. Worth every penny since I needed clarity about my $6k refund!

Did they actually explain anything useful when you got through? Last time I reached an agent they just told me to keep waiting 🙄

Yes! The agent was super helpful - confirmed my verification was successful, explained that my return was in the final processing stage, and gave me an estimated deposit date which turned out to be accurate. Maybe I just got lucky with a good agent?

Based on data from this subreddit (I've been tracking posts about this for months), the average time from ID verification disappearing to 846 code is 9.3 days with a standard deviation of 3.2 days. So most people see their 846 code between 6-13 days after verification clears.

I've been keeping it in a spreadsheet for my own reference. I'll make a full post once tax season is further along and I have more data points. Currently tracking about 137 cases from various forums.

Pro tip: If you file early next year and set up direct deposit, you usually avoid most of these verification issues. I filed on February 1st and had my refund by Feb 12th. No verification needed, no delays.

-

Rita Jacobs

This! I always file in the first week and never have issues. It's when you wait until March/April that the system gets backed up and starts flagging everything for verification.

I was skeptical too but it's honestly incredible. It's like having a tax pro explain everything that's happening with your return in plain English. I was shocked at how accurate the timeline was - told me I'd get my refund on the 28th and it hit my account on the 27th.

Here's a timeline breakdown (from my experience and what I've observed here): 1. Identity verification completed 2. Verification status disappears (1-3 days after verification) 3. Processing begins/resumes (0-5 days of apparent inactivity) 4. Code 570 may appear (additional account action pending) - not everyone gets this 5. Code 571 may appear (resolved the 570 issue) - not everyone gets this 6. Code 846 appears (refund issued) - typically 7-14 days after verification status disappears 7. Actual deposit hits your account (1-5 days after 846 date) Hope this helps!

Just a heads up - I had to verify twice this year! The first verification disappeared and then a week later they asked me to verify AGAIN. So frustrating. Make sure you keep checking your account.

You guys ever wonder if the IRS deliberately makes this process confusing so we won't claim our refunds? 🤔 Like some conspiracy to keep our money as long as possible...

Actually it's because Congress keeps cutting their budget and they're using computer systems from the 1960s. Not a conspiracy, just incompetence and underfunding.

After fighting with the IRS for WEEKS about my verification, I finally broke down and used claimyr.com to get an agent on the phone. Literally had been trying to call for days with no luck. Got connected to an IRS rep within 90 minutes who confirmed my refund was being processed and would be deposited within the week. Best money I spent all year considering I was waiting on a refund of over $5k!

So claimyr.com is basically just a service that waits on hold for you with the IRS?

0 coins

-

Yeah basically it navigates all those annoying phone menus and waits in the queue for you. Then when an agent is available, they call you and connect you. Saves hours of frustration.
