E-filed on 2/6, Mysterious ID Verification Reversed, Agent Says 9-Week Wait - Anyone Get Refund Earlier?
Filed and was accepted on 02/06/2024. My account randomly went into ID verification for two weeks. Interestingly, the ID verification fell off on its own last week without me doing anything. I just got off the phone with an IRS agent who told me that the processing of my return officially started on 02/15 after the ID verification was reversed. She said it would take up to 9 weeks to get my refund from that date. Has anyone gone through this before and received their refund earlier than the timeframe they were given? Looking for real experiences.

Omg this LITERALLY happened to me last month! I was so confused when they put me in verification and then it just disappeared?? The agent told me 8 weeks but I actually got my refund in just over 3 weeks! I was checking my transcript daily (yes I'm that person lol) and saw it update with an 846 code on a Friday, then had my money by Wednesday. So don't lose hope! Their timeframes seem to be worst-case scenarios.

I would say my experience was somewhat similar, although it probably depends on your specific situation. My verification was actually completed (I had to do the ID.me thing), but still got my refund about 4 weeks after processing started instead of the 9 they quoted me.

Think of it like when a restaurant tells you the wait is 45 minutes but seats you in 20. The IRS is basically doing the same thing - they're giving you the worst-case timeline so you don't keep calling them every day. If they say 9 weeks and you get it in 4, you're happy. If they say 2 weeks and it takes 4, you're upset.

Haha, checking transcripts daily? I thought I was the only one who did that! š But seriously, this is really good information. I wonder if the automatic reversal of verification means there's some kind of new system in place? Concerned about what this means for identity protection going forward.

I'm currently experiencing a similar Processing Delay (PD) situation due to an automated Identity Verification Flag (IVF) that was subsequently reversed. The IRS Return Processing Pipeline has numerous checkpoints, and what you're describing is consistent with their Automated Verification Reversal Protocol. I've been using https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript codes and it's been invaluable for predicting when my refund will actually arrive. Their analysis showed that these auto-reversed verifications typically result in expedited processing - my 8-week estimate is now showing as likely 3-4 weeks based on similar patterns.

I'm not sure about using third-party sites with my tax info... How do you know it's accurate? Does it ask for personal information?

I was hesitant too, but taxr.ai actually just analyzes the codes that are already on your transcript - you don't input SSNs or anything like that. Last year I had a similar verification issue that got reversed, and their prediction was spot on when the IRS said 6-8 weeks but I got my refund in 22 days. The site explained exactly what each code meant for MY specific situation, not just generic definitions.

I appreciate your clear explanation of what happened. Here's what's likely occurring based on my experience: 1. Your return triggered an automated ID verification flag (common this year) 2. The system then determined you were low-risk, so it reversed automatically 3. Your processing officially started on 2/15 when that reversal completed 4. The 9-week timeframe is their standard response for ANY processing delay In reality, most people in your situation receive their refunds within 3-5 weeks from the processing start date. The key is watching your transcript for the 846 code, which indicates your refund has been scheduled.

This is legit the most straightforward explanation I've seen on here. Thx for breaking it down like this. The IRS reps seem to just read from scripts, but this actually makes sense.

Same situation happened to me: ā¢ Filed 1/29 ā¢ ID verification notice 2/8 ā¢ Verification disappeared 2/20 ā¢ Told 9 weeks by agent ā¢ Actually received refund 3/15 So about 3.5 weeks from when processing restarted.

I feel your frustration!! When this happened to me last year, I kept getting different answers every time I called. FINALLY I used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) to get through to a senior agent who could actually see what was happening with my account. Turns out my verification was auto-reversed because they matched my info with my previous returns! The best part was I got my refund exactly 24 days after processing restarted - WAY sooner than the 9 weeks they quoted me. Don't give up hope! And definitely try to get through to a senior agent who can see more details.

Have you checked your transcript since speaking with the agent? Does it show any specific codes like 570/971? And did you claim any credits that might extend processing time beyond the standard timeframe? The reversal without intervention is what I find most interesting about your situation.

Just wanted to add that there's been a big increase in these auto-verification situations this filing season. The IRS implemented a new fraud detection system that's apparently being a bit overzealous. I've seen multiple posts here about verification being triggered and then reversed without any action. From what I can tell, it seems to happen more with returns that have address changes or significant income differences from previous years. Did either of those apply to you?

Got my refund in 23 days after ID verification reversed. Filed 1/30. Verification appeared 2/8. Disappeared 2/15. Refund deposited 3/10. Agent told me 9 weeks too. Don't worry. System is working faster than they say.
