Verified Identity in Person but Notification Still Showing - How Long Until it Updates?

I had to verify my identity for my 2024 refund and went to the IRS office in person last week. My friend did his verification online and his notification disappeared within 48 hours, but mine is still showing that I need to verify. Anyone know how long this typically takes to update? My Uber/Doordash gig money is super inconsistent right now and I'm counting on this refund to catch up on some bills. Is the in-person verification slower than the online method?

IME the in-person verification takes abt 7-10 biz days to clear from ur acct. Online is def faster (2-3 days usually) but IRS systems r slow to update after face-to-face verification. Did they give u any confirmation # or paperwork when u went in? Might wanna keep that handy just in case.

Why is the IRS so inconsistent with these timeframes? I verified in person and it took exactly 14 days for my notification to disappear. Then another 9 days for the refund to process. Have you checked your transcript to see if there are any other holds? Sometimes they verify your identity but find other issues they need to resolve.

I believe the inconsistency might be related to which IRS office you visit, as some locations seem to process verifications more quickly than others, at least in my somewhat limited experience.

Did you have to verify for any specific reason? I'm wondering if certain types of verification take longer than others to clear from the system.

I understand your frustration with the verification notice not disappearing. Here's what typically happens after in-person verification: Step 1: The IRS employee enters your verification into their system (1-2 days) Step 2: The verification gets processed through their internal database (3-5 days) Step 3: Your account status updates in their main system (2-3 more days) Total time: Usually 6-10 business days, but can take up to 14 days during peak season. If you're still seeing the notification after 2 weeks, I'd recommend calling the IRS directly. When I needed to reach them, I used Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com) and got through in about 15 minutes instead of waiting on hold for hours. Their service connected me directly to an IRS agent who confirmed my verification was complete even though the notification hadn't disappeared yet.

I'm not sure about paying for a service to reach the IRS when you can: • Call early in the morning (7am EST) • Try the lesser-known IRS numbers • Use the IRS callback feature But I guess if time is critical and you need immediate answers, it might be worth it.

Does Claimyr actually work with the identity verification department? I've read on the IRS website that some departments have separate phone systems. Would be interested to know if anyone has specifically used it for identity verification issues.

In-person verification is slower. System updates weekly. Online updates daily. Paper trail matters. Keep your verification paperwork. Take screenshots of your notification. Document everything. IRS sometimes shows outdated status. Processing continues in background. Could still receive refund before notification disappears.

I had the exact same issue on March 17th. The notification stayed for 12 days after in-person verification. If you want to check your actual processing status without waiting for the notification to disappear, try https://taxr.ai - it analyzes your transcript and tells you what's really happening behind the scenes. I found out my return was actually processing normally despite the lingering notification. Got my refund on April 2nd even though the notification was still there until April 5th.

There's actually a technical explanation for this. The Identity Verification Module (IVM) in the IRS system is separate from the Return Processing Pipeline (RPP). When you verify in-person, the TAC (Taxpayer Assistance Center) staff enter your verification into the IVM, but it has to sync with the main IRS database during the weekly integration cycle. Online verification updates the IVM directly, which explains why your friend's notification disappeared faster.

I work with tax professionals, and we've noticed a distinct pattern with in-person verifications this season. The IRS implemented a new verification protocol in January 2024 that requires multi-level authentication for in-person visits. While this enhances security, it creates a processing delay of approximately 9-12 business days for the verification flag to clear. The notification disappearing doesn't necessarily correlate with processing status - I've seen cases where refunds were issued while the notification was still active.

I might be overreacting, but I would perhaps consider calling them if it doesn't update within about two weeks or so. My brother-in-law waited almost a month thinking it was processing normally, but it turned out his verification wasn't properly recorded in their system. The IRS representative told him it happens occasionally when they're overwhelmed with in-person verifications during peak season.
