after struggling with this exact problem I found a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me through to a live IRS agent in about an hour. The agent confirmed my verification letter had been sent and gave me the exact date to expect it. Talking to an actual person was so much better than the automated systems. It was the only way I could get real answers about my refund status.
Did it actually help resolve your issue faster or just give you more information?
The actual verification process still took the same time, but I was able to confirm exactly when they sent the letter and what type of verification they needed. Gave me peace of mind instead of wondering what was happening with my money.
Did you move recently or change addresses from your previous tax filing? That's usually what triggers these verification letters in my experience.
Yeah I moved last summer, so I guess that's why. Still seems excessive to delay everything for weeks over an address change.
When I was trying to track my tax refund last season, I wasted SO much time trying to interpret all the transcript codes and cross-reference with WMR. Total nightmare. This year I used taxr.ai and it was a complete game changer! It explained exactly what was happening with my return in simple English, predicted my refund timeline accurately, and helped me understand why my transcript and WMR were showing different things. Saved me hours of stress and confusion. Check it out: https://taxr.ai
The IRS has the most broken, outdated systems ever. I swear they're still using computers from the 1980s š Don't worry about the transcript not updating yet - that's completely normal. I've had my refund literally in my bank account while my transcript was still showing nothing updated. As long as you got the acceptance confirmation, you're good!
For real though! I heard they're still running on COBOL which is like prehistoric programming language at this point š
CALL THE TAXPAYER ADVOCATE SERVICE! 1-877-777-4778. They helped me when I was in this exact situation. Found out my return was stuck in limbo because of a simple verification issue that nobody had bothered to tell me about. Worth a shot if you're desperate.
Taxpayer Advocate is so backlogged they're not taking new cases unless you can prove financial hardship (eviction, utilities shut off, etc
ah damn, that's new then. worked for me back in february but guess they're overwhelmed now too š
Dealing with the exact same thing and finally contacted my local congressional representative. They have caseworkers who can inquire with the IRS on your behalf. Mine got back to me in 3 days with more info than I could get after weeks of trying myself. Might be worth a try.
This is actually great advice. My cousin works for a congressman and says they get IRS issues resolved way faster than individuals can.
WHY IS THE IRS LIKE THIS?!? š« I'm also on a payment plan and they took my entire refund this year without warning. What's even the point of the payment plan if they're just gonna take your money anyway?
The payment plan prevents them from levying your bank accounts, garnishing your wages, and putting liens on your property. It doesn't protect refunds though. Never has.
Well that should be made clearer when you sign up for the plan! Nobody explained that to me š
I swear decoding IRS transcripts feels like being a detective in some weird tax mystery. I went down this rabbit hole last month trying to figure out what was happening with my offset. Ended up using taxr.ai which basically translated the whole transcript for me in seconds. Showed me exactly what happened with my offset and when I'd get the rest of my money. SO much easier than trying to figure it out myself!

Did anyone else get a partial refund? I was supposed to get $2,890 but only got $1,745 with no explanation. Transcript has some adjustment code 971 but I can't figure out what it means.

ā¢This happened to me last year - so confusing trying to figure out all those codes! I used taxr.ai this year and it explained everything clearly. Would have saved me so much stress if I'd had it last year when they adjusted my refund. It tells you exactly what each code means and why they changed your amount.

ā¢Thanks! I'll keep an eye out for the letter. And might check out that tool too, these transcript codes might as well be in another language šµāš«

ā¢I was in the same boat until I got through to a real person using claimyr.com. Found out my return was stuck in review for a simple reason they fixed in 5 minutes. Sometimes you just need to talk to a human to get things unstuck.
