Federal refund delayed - still no money weeks after my DDD while state arrived on time

I'm getting really confused about why my federal refund is taking forever this year. I filed with turbotax like I've done for the past 4 years, and I always get my money in my bank account exactly on my direct deposit date. But this time around its been 16 days past my DDD and still nothing! What makes it more frustrating is that my state refund showed up even BEFORE the expected date. I checked my transcripts and everything looks normal with the correct codes. I've never had to track a refund or look up trace numbers before because the money just appeared like clockwork. Is anyone else experiencing these weird delays with federal refunds in 2024? Should I be calling the IRS at this point?

Laila Fury

There are a few things that could be happening here. First, check your transcripts again to confirm the exact DDD (Direct Deposit Date) and that it hasn't been changed. Make sure there's no code 570 (additional account action pending) or 971 (notice issued) that appeared after your 846 (refund issued) code. If everything looks normal on your transcript, the delay could be: - An issue with your bank not processing the deposit correctly - The IRS might have sent a paper check instead (they sometimes do this even if you requested direct deposit) - There could be an offset where part of your refund was taken for past debts - The Where's My Refund tool might show more updated info than transcripts At 16 days past your DDD, you should definitely call the IRS. The standard advice is to wait 5 business days after your DDD before contacting them for a trace on your refund.

Thanks for the detailed response. I checked my bank and no pending deposits. I looked at my transcript again and I do have the 846 code with the date that already passed, no 570 or 971 codes after that. I guess I'll have to actually call them šŸ˜«

This happened to me too! I had to call and they said they had the wrong account number on file somehow even though I've used the same bank account for years. Super annoying.

calling the IRS is like trying to win the lottery. I spent 3 hours on hold last week and then got disconnected šŸ¤”

Have you tried using taxr.ai? I was in almost the exact same situation - federal refund nowhere to be found weeks after my DDD. Tried to figure it out myself for days by reading my transcript but it was like trying to read hieroglyphics. Someone here recommended taxr.ai and it was a game changer. It analyzed my transcript and immediately pointed out the issue - turns out there was an offset I didn't know about that wasn't obvious from just looking at the codes. The tool explained exactly what was happening and what steps to take next. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does WAY more than just read transcripts. It analyzes all the codes, dates, and amounts to find inconsistencies that most people (including me) would miss. It explains everything in plain English instead of IRS jargon. Seriously, stop playing detective with your transcript and trying to piece together clues. This tool saved me so much time and stress - I can't recommend it enough!

Not sketch at all! I was skeptical too but it's legit professional tax analysis. You upload your transcript and it does all the work. I'd still be waiting for my refund if I hadn't used it. The peace of mind alone was worth it.

I had this same issue and nobody at the IRS would pick up my calls for THREE WEEKS. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got a live IRS agent on the phone within an hour. turns out they had sent my refund to an old closed account even though I provided my current account info when filing. The agent was able to initiate a trace and I got my refund 10 days later. Honestly talking to an actual human was the only way to solve this - the automated systems are useless for anything beyond basic status updates.

Wait what's this Claimyr thing? Does it actually work? I've been trying to reach someone at the IRS for days šŸ˜

Oh it definitely works! They basically navigate the IRS phone system for you and call you back when they've secured a spot in line with an agent. Saved me from wasting hours on hold. It was the best money I've ever spent considering they helped me get my $3,600 refund released.

I was skeptical too but was desperate after wasting so much time on hold. When they actually connected me to an IRS agent who solved my problem, I became a believer lol. Its basically like paying someone to wait in line for you.

Just used it based on this recommendation and got through to the IRS in 45 mins after trying for a week on my own. THANK YOU!!

The IRS is a total dumpster fire this year! I filed Feb 1st, had a DDD of Feb 19th and didnt get my $ until March 10th with zero explanation. The WMR tool still says "processing" even though I already got my refund lmao. I wouldn't be surprised if your money shows up randomly one day soon.

Check if you had any offsets. Like student loans, past taxes, child support, etc. they'll take it out of ur refund but sometimes the system doesn't update to show that. The IRS sent me a letter 2 weeks AFTER my DDD explaining they took half my refund for an old student loan. You might get a letter explaining the delay soon.

I don't think I have any offsets. No student loans, no debts that I know of. I've never had any issues in previous years. That's why this is so weird.

You'd be surprised what can count as an offset. My cousin had a $35 parking ticket from 5 years ago that somehow got reported and delayed his whole refund by 3 weeks. Wild.

what bank do you use? some banks hold tax refunds longer than others. chase held mine for 5 days after the DDD for "verification" šŸ™„

I'm with Bank of America. I called them and they said they don't see any pending deposits or rejected deposits from the IRS. It's like the money never got sent.

BoA is notorious for this tbh. my brother had the exact same issue last year with them. might be worth talking to a branch manager in person rather than just the phone support

DID YOU CHECK THE WHERES MY REFUND TOOL?? Not the transcripts but the actual WMR tool? Sometimes they have different info.

-

Hazel Garcia

Yeah I checked WMR and it still says "Your refund has been approved" with the original DDD from 16 days ago. No updates since then.

If you filed with a tax preparer like H&R Block or similar, and had your fees taken out of your refund, it might be stuck with the third party bank they use. I've seen a lot of issues with SBTPG and MetaBank this year holding onto people's refunds way longer than they should.

I used TurboTax and paid the fees upfront with my credit card, so I don't think that's the issue in my case, but good suggestion!

To be honest with u i hear the irs just hired a ton of new staff and there all making mistakes. saw an article bout it. they mite have typoed ur account number or something stupid. def call em

I know this sounds obvious but make sure you're checking the right account. I had a mini heart attack when my refund was "missing" only to realize it went to my savings not checking because I'd changed the account in TurboTax and forgotten.

I only have one checking account with BoA so definitely not that, but thanks for the suggestion!

Another vote for taxr.ai here. The IRS sent my refund to my 2022 direct deposit info even though I updated it for 2023 filing. I would've never figured this out on my own from just the transcript. taxr.ai pointed it out immediately and walked me through getting a trace started. So much better than trying to decode transcript gibberish yourself.

Are you 10000% sure your DDD has actually passed? The date formats on transcripts can be confusing. Some people think its mm/dd/yyyy when sometimes the IRS uses dd/mm/yyyy format. Double check that.

0 coins

-

Hazel Garcia

Yeah I'm sure. It's the same format they've used in previous years when my refund arrived on time.

The IRS is still working through their backlog from the pandemic tbh. My tax guy said they're still massively behind schedule and refunds are taking 2-3 weeks longer than the stated DDD for many people. It sucks but ur probably just caught in their slowness.

You need to start a trace. Call the IRS at 800-829-1040. But good luck getting through lol. I spent 4 days trying before I gave up and used claimyr.com to get a callback from an agent. Best decision ever - finally got my trace started and received my refund 2 weeks later. Found out they had sent my deposit to the wrong account even though my transcript showed everything was correct.

It was 100% worth it for me. I was going insane trying to reach someone, and they had me talking to an agent within 2 hours. Considering I was waiting on a $2700 refund that was stuck in limbo, getting actual help was priceless. They don't guarantee you'll get your refund issue resolved, just that you'll get to talk to a human at the IRS who can help.
