IRS says "Refund Sent" for February 26th (today) but nothing in my bank account yet - should I wait until March 3rd?
Has anyone experienced their Direct Deposit Date being today (February 26) but still nothing in their account? The IRS website says my refund is "scheduled to be sent to your bank by February 26, 2025" and then says to "check with your bank if it's not credited by March 03, 2025." I have a regular bank account, not one of those tax prep cards or anything. I just checked the IRS "Where's My Refund" tool again at 12:49 and it still shows the same status. Under "Refund Status Results" it shows three boxes: Return Received, Refund Approved, and Refund Sent. All three have check marks, which I'm assuming means everything is processed properly? The exact message says: "Your tax refund is scheduled to be sent to your bank by February 26, 2025. If your refund is not credited to your account by March 03, 2025, check with your bank to see if it has been received." There's also a note that says "For refund information, please continue to check here, or use our free mobile app, IRS2Go. Updates to refund status are made no more than once a day." My filing details show: Tax Year: 2024 Filing Status: Head of household This is driving me crazy because I was counting on this money hitting my account today! I've been refreshing my bank app all day and still nothing. Has anyone else filed as Head of Household for tax year 2024 and experienced delays with their direct deposit even when the IRS shows it was sent? Do you think I should wait until March 3rd before contacting my bank, or should I call them tomorrow if it doesn't show up overnight?

This happens frequently and is normal. The DDD on your transcript is when the IRS releases the funds to your bank. Most traditional banks will post the deposit within 1-3 business days after the DDD. Some banks like Chime or other online banks might post earlier, and some credit unions might take an extra day or two. With today being your DDD, you might see it tomorrow or Thursday most likely. Some things that could delay it further: - Bank holidays - Weekends (banks don't process ACH transfers on weekends) - If there's any discrepancy between your account info and what the IRS has - If you had fees taken out of your refund from a tax preparer I'd give it until Friday before getting too concerned. The system generally works as intended, just not always as fast as we'd like!

•Thanks for the detailed reply! I was hoping to have it today since thats what my transcript showed. I dont usually get this anxious about refunds but I have a big car repair bill coming up.

•Exactly right. I've had this happen every year for the past 3 years. My DDD was 4/7 and it didn't hit until 4/9. Banks can be soooo slow sometimes 🙄

•This is super helpful. My DDD was yesterday and nothing yet. Getting worried but this calms me down a bit.

•What if the bank info is wrong? Do they mail a paper check automatically or do i have to call them?

•If the direct deposit fails due to incorrect info, the IRS will automatically issue a paper check to the address on your return. That adds about 2-3 weeks to the timeline unfortunately.

I was in the EXACT same situation last month and was pulling my hair out trying to understand what was happening with my refund. After struggling to make sense of the WMR tool and trying to figure out those stupid transcript codes, I finally tried taxr.ai and it was seriously a game changer. It read my transcript and explained in plain English exactly what was happening with my refund and when I would actually get it. Saved me hours of frustration and gave me peace of mind. https://taxr.ai

•Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

•It does way more than just read your transcript. It analyzes all the codes and dates, explains what each thing means, and gives you a clear timeline. It even spotted an adjustment that I would have missed completely! After using it, I finally understood why my refund was delayed and exactly when I would get it. Seriously the best tool I've found for dealing with the IRS.

•Is this like one of those paid services? Seems like all this info is available free if u know where to look.

•Yeah there is a fee, but honestly I wasted HOURS trying to figure out the free resources. The IRS website is nearly impossible to navigate and the phone lines are a joke. For me, it was worth every penny to just get straight answers about my refund instead of stressing for weeks.

•Just tried it and WOW. Worth it completely. I've been trying to understand my transcript for weeks and this broke it down in seconds. Thanks for sharing this!

After three weeks of constantly checking WMR and getting that same message, I finally got through to a real person at the IRS using Claimyr.com. The app got me a callback from the IRS within an hour when I'd been trying to reach someone for days. The agent explained there was a small verification hold on my account that they cleared right away. My deposit hit my account two days later! Talking to an actual human at the IRS made all the difference.

•did u really get a callback that quick? i tried calling directly and waited 2 hours before hanging up 😡

•Yes! I was shocked too. The app navigates through all the IRS phone tree prompts automatically and holds your place in line. When they had an agent available, I got a call back on my phone. Definitely beat sitting on hold for hours only to get disconnected.

•I'm always suspicious of these services. Did you actually have to give them any personal info?

Lilly Curtis
•Nope! They just connect you with the IRS - you only share your info directly with the IRS agent when they call you. It basically just saves you from the hold time hell.

My DDD was April 10th and I didn't get it until April 13th. It's annoying but pretty normal. The IRS initiates the payment on the DDD but then it's up to the banks to process it which can take a few days. I know it's stressful when you're waiting for your money, but hang in there!

This is happening to a TON of people this year. I'm in a Facebook group for tax refund statuses and literally hundreds of people are reporting delays of 2-4 days past their DDD. Something seems off with the system this year. My theory is the IRS is just marking refunds as "sent" on the transcript date but actually releasing them in batches a few days later.

•I think ur right. My sis and I filed on the same day with the same tax person. She got hers 3 days after DDD and im still waiting 5 days later!

•Yeah it's wild! And there's no rhyme or reason to it. Some people with complicated returns get theirs right away, others with simple returns wait weeks. The system is a mess this year.

DONT PANIC! Mine showed exactly this last week. DDD was 4/8, didn't hit my account until 4/11. The WMR tool is notorious for being vague and unhelpful. As others have said, the DDD is just when the IRS releases the funds, not when your bank processes it. If you filed head of household like me, you might have dependent credits which sometimes take an extra day to process at the bank level for some reason.

•Thank you for this. I am trying not to panic but was really hoping it would come through today. I do have dependents so maybe that's adding to the delay.

I work at a bank (not customer service, I'm in the back office) and I can tell you that DDD dates from the IRS are just when they initiate the ACH transfer. We typically receive those files overnight and process them the next business day. But sometimes the IRS batches get delayed or there are verification processes that happen. Plus if you're counting on it today, remember that even though the IRS says today is the DDD, they might have actually queued it up for end-of-day processing which means it won't hit the banking system until overnight.

•This is the most helpful info ive seen on this topic! So is there any advantage to having certain banks? I keep hearing people with online banks get it faster?
0 coins
Arnav Bengali
•Some online banks like Chime or Cash App advertise "early direct deposit" which essentially means they front you the money as soon as they see the incoming ACH notification, rather than waiting for the actual funds to settle. Traditional banks typically wait for the actual settlement. It's not that online banks actually get the money sooner - they just choose to give you access to it before it technically arrives.

Rachel Tao
•so do credit unions process faster or slower than big banks? i always heard credit unions are slower
0 coins
Arnav Bengali
•It varies. Some credit unions are actually very fast because they have less red tape, but others that use third-party processors can add an extra day. There's no universal rule - it's really specific to the individual financial institution and their processing setup.

I'm in the EXACT same boat! DDD of 4/15 and nothing in my account at Navy Federal. Called my bank and they said they don't see any pending deposits either. This waiting game is killing me especially since I need the money for rent. Will update when/if it arrives.

Does your transcript show code 846 with today's date? That's the official refund issued code. If that's there with today's date, then the IRS has done their part and it's just waiting on banking processing. Also, did you get your refund directly or did you have fees taken out by a tax preparer? That can add time too.
0 coins
Felix Grigori
•Yes, it shows 846 with today's date. I filed myself through FreeTaxUSA and didn't have any fees taken out, so it should be direct deposit straight to my account.

Danielle Mays
•Then you should see it within 1-3 business days. It's really just up to your bank at this point. The IRS has released the funds.

I had this exact issue - WMR said my refund was scheduled for April 5, but nothing hit my account until April 8. The most annoying part is that the IRS considers their job done once they initiate the transfer, but there's this weird limbo period where the money isn't in your account yet and nobody can tell you exactly where it is. Just wait a couple more days before worrying too much.

My advice if you're really concerned - check your transcript instead of WMR. Go to irs.gov, access your transcript, and look for code 846 followed by a date. That's your ACTUAL refund issued date. WMR is notoriously unreliable and often shows generic messages. If your transcript shows a 846 code with today's date, then the IRS has released the payment and it's in the banking system pipeline.

•That's frustrating! Have you tried using the taxr.ai service? It helps interpret transcripts if you can get access, but if not, honestly just give it a couple days before getting too worried.

Another HoH filer here - filed 3/18, got accepted same day, WMR showed DDD of 4/8, actually hit my Chase account early morning 4/10. Seems like a 1-2 day delay is pretty standard this year for whatever reason. I wouldn't worry too much yet, but definitely keep an eye on it.

I spent literal HOURS trying to decode my transcript and understand why my refund was delayed. The IRS website is USELESS and their phone support is a joke. I finally broke down and tried the taxr.ai tool after seeing it recommended here, and it was amazing. It read my transcript, explained every code, and showed me exactly what was happening. Turns out I had a simple review that had completed but WMR wasn't updated yet. Got my refund 3 days later. Would've saved myself weeks of stress if I'd known about this sooner!

•Does this actually work? Seems like something that would just tell you what you already know from looking at the transcript yourself.

•That's what I thought too, but it's WAY more detailed than just reading the transcript. It explained what each code meant specifically for MY situation, showed me the precise timeline of what happened and what would happen next. The IRS codes are cryptic as hell - this made it crystal clear. It even spotted an adjustment I hadn't noticed and explained exactly why they changed my refund amount.

•You can either upload a PDF of your transcript or link your IRS account directly through their secure system. I did the upload since I already had my transcript downloaded and it worked perfectly.

April 15th is a Monday this year, so many banks might not process it until tomorrow. I'd give it until Wednesday before getting too concerned. The banking system is slower than we'd all like!

If you need to reach a real person at the IRS (which I HIGHLY recommend if your refund doesn't show up in the next day or two), use the Claimyr.com service. I wasted DAYS trying to get through on the regular IRS number, kept getting disconnected after waiting for hours. Used Claimyr and got a callback with an agent in 45 minutes. They explained exactly what was happening with my refund and resolved the issue while I was on the call. Best money I've spent considering how much of my refund was at stake.

•100% worth it if you're in a time crunch or dealing with a significant refund amount. I calculated that every day my refund was delayed was costing me more in missed bill payments than what the service cost. Plus the peace of mind of actually talking to someone who could help was priceless.

•Never had an issue in 15+ years. Plus if it doesn't arrive, you can trace it and get a replacement. With DD issues, it's much harder to track down where the money went.

I have USAA and my deposits from the IRS always hit one business day after the DDD on my transcript. It seems to be pretty standard that there's at least a one-day delay, so I wouldn't worry yet. If it doesn't show by Thursday, then maybe start making some calls.

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! My DDD was today (Feb 26) and I've been obsessively checking my bank account every few hours. It's so frustrating when you're counting on that money and the IRS says it's "sent" but your account is still empty. Reading through all these comments is actually really reassuring though - sounds like 1-3 day delays are totally normal even when everything is processed correctly. I'm going to try to stop checking my account every 5 minutes and just wait until Friday before I start panicking. Thanks for posting this - nice to know I'm not alone in the waiting game!
