Head of Household Refund Delayed Beyond Normal Timeframe Since January - Stuck at "Return Received" with Tax Topic 152
I filed as Head of Household and got this frustrating message on Where's My Refund today. Been waiting since I filed in January, and now all I'm seeing is "We apologize, but your return processing has been delayed beyond the normal timeframe." I just checked my refund status at IRS.gov, and here's exactly what I'm seeing: "Your Personal Refund Status Results Tax Data Social Security Number or IRS Individual Tax identification N: ***-**-**** Filing Status: Head of Household Your Expected Refund Return Received ✓ Refund Approved □ Refund Sent □ We apologize, but your return processing has been delayed beyond the normal timeframe. You can continue to check back here for the most up to date information regarding your refund. We understand your tax refund is very important and we are working to process your return as quickly as possible. Please read the following information related to your tax situation: Tax Topic 152. Refund Information Please Note: For refund information, please continue to check here, or use our free mobile app, IRS2Go. Updates to refund status are made no more than once a day." They're literally just showing my return as received, but the refund approved and refund sent boxes aren't checked yet. No explanation about WHY it's delayed or how much longer I should expect to wait. I'm checking the IRS2Go app daily but nothing changes. I'm seriously concerned because it's been months since January, and I'm still stuck at this stage. The battery on my phone was at 72% when I took the screenshot, and now it's almost dead because I keep obsessively checking for updates! Anyone else stuck in this "delayed beyond normal timeframe" purgatory with Tax Topic 152? What does this even mean? Has anyone had this message and eventually received their refund? I'm starting to wonder if I need to call them, but I know their phone lines are a nightmare.

This "Where's My Refund" status page shows three key stages of your refund process: Return Received, Refund Approved, and Refund Sent. Currently, only the first box is checked, indicating the IRS has received your return but hasn't yet approved or issued your refund. The delay message combined with Tax Topic 152 provides important context - TT152 indicates you're eligible for a refund, but your return requires additional processing. Your Head of Household filing status could be one trigger for this review, as the IRS often verifies eligibility for this status since it offers more favorable tax treatment than filing single. The lack of progress beyond "Return Received" after filing in January suggests your return is likely in the error resolution department or under manual review. This could involve: - Verification of Head of Household eligibility - Income verification - Review of claimed credits - Identity verification checks While the IRS message doesn't provide a timeline, they've confirmed they're only updating refund statuses once per day. You should continue monitoring both your refund status and tax transcript for any changes, as the transcript often shows activity before the Where's My Refund tool updates.

•Could be anywhere from 2-12 weeks depending on what they're reviewing. Each case is different unfortunately

Hey guys instead of playing detective with WMR and transcripts I started using taxr.ai - it costs a buck but it actually tells you exactly whats going on and when you'll likely get paid. Way better than trying to guess what all these codes mean https://taxr.ai

PRO TIP: your transcript will tell you way more than WMR. Go pull those if you can access them

I feel your pain! Been in the exact same situation - filed in late January as Head of Household and got stuck with that same "delayed beyond normal timeframe" message for what felt like forever. The worst part is how vague they are about timelines. From my experience, the Head of Household status does seem to trigger extra reviews more often. They want to make sure you actually qualify (supporting a qualifying person, paying more than half the household costs, etc.). I ended up having to wait about 8 weeks total before it finally moved to "Refund Approved" and then got deposited within a few days after that. The key thing is that once you see that delay message, you're basically in a manual review queue. No amount of checking the app will speed it up unfortunately. I know it's frustrating but try to check maybe once a week instead of daily - it'll save your sanity and your phone battery! 😅 Hang in there, it will eventually process!
