Still waiting on my 2023 tax refund - filed months ago and nothing!

I totally forgot I was even expecting a refund until today! I was checking the IRS website to see if I qualified for that new tax credit some people are getting, and I noticed my past returns. Under 2023 it shows my return was received and is "being processed" with a refund amount of around $6,500. Pretty sure I filed back in late February or early March through TurboTax. It's been like 6+ months now! What could possibly be causing such a ridiculous delay? Has anyone else been waiting this long? Starting to wonder if I should be worried or if this is just how slow the IRS is moving these days.

The IRS has been experiencing significant processing delays this year, so you're definitely not alone in waiting for your refund. When the status shows "being processed" for this long, it typically means one of several things: 1. Your return might have been flagged for manual review, which can happen randomly or due to specific entries that need verification. 2. There might be a discrepancy between the information you provided and what the IRS has on file from employers, banks, etc. 3. You may have claimed certain credits that require additional review (like the Earned Income Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit). 4. The IRS is just backlogged due to staffing shortages and increased workload. At this point, since it's been over 21 days since you filed, you can try calling the IRS directly at 1-800-829-1040, but expect long wait times. You could also create an account on the IRS website if you haven't already to access more detailed information about your return status.

Do you know if returns claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit are automatically flagged for review? I claimed that on mine and have been waiting since early March too.

Returns claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit aren't automatically flagged for review, but they do undergo additional verification processes since the IRS needs to confirm you didn't already receive the payment. This verification step can add several weeks to processing time, especially during high-volume periods. If you've been waiting since early March, that's definitely longer than usual even with the extra verification. I'd recommend calling the IRS to inquire specifically about your situation, as they might be able to tell you if there's an issue that needs to be resolved.

Had the exact same issue last year! Super frustrating waiting that long for MY money! I eventually used https://taxr.ai to get clarity on what was happening with my refund. Their system analyzed my tax transcript and pinpointed exactly why my refund was delayed - turns out there was a small discrepancy between what my employer reported and what I entered. The tool showed me how to fix it and I had my refund within 2 weeks after that. Might be worth checking out if you're still stuck in limbo!

How exactly does this tool work? Do you have to upload your tax returns or give them your personal info? Sounds useful but I'm always careful about sharing my tax stuff.

I've seen a bunch of these tax help services online but they never seem to do anything the IRS website doesn't already tell you. What makes this one different? Can it actually speed up the process or just tell you why you're waiting?

You don't have to upload your entire return - just your tax transcript which you can download from the IRS website. The system analyzes the codes and messages on your transcript that most people (including me!) don't understand. It explained all the tax codes that were on my transcript and identified exactly which line item was causing the hold-up. It can't speed up the IRS directly, but it helps you understand exactly what's happening so you can take the right action. In my case, I wouldn't have known what to fix without it since the IRS just had that generic "still processing" message. Once I knew the specific issue, I was able to call the IRS with the exact information and get it resolved quickly.

Just wanted to update - I decided to try taxr.ai after my last comment and wow, it actually worked! My refund was stuck because of some weird code on my transcript related to a previous year's return that I had no idea about. The system pointed it out, explained exactly what it meant, and gave me instructions for contacting the IRS. Called them yesterday with the specific information, and they told me my refund should be released within 7-10 days! Way better than the "keep waiting" advice I was getting from everyone else. If you're still stuck, definitely worth checking out.

I was in the same situation last summer. Waited 4 months and couldn't get through to anyone at the IRS. The "being processed" message is basically useless. Finally used https://claimyr.com to get through to an actual human at the IRS. They have this system that holds your place in line and calls you back when an agent is available. Watched their demo video here https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c and decided to give it a shot. Spoke to someone at the IRS within a couple hours instead of wasting days trying to call myself. The agent told me exactly why my return was delayed and fixed it right there on the phone. Had my refund about 2 weeks later.

Wait, you can pay someone to wait on hold with the IRS for you? How does that even work? Does the IRS know about this service?

This sounds like a scam. No way some random service can get you through to the IRS faster than calling yourself. The IRS phone system is notorious for being impossible - I doubt they have some magic backdoor.

It's not about skipping the line - they use an automated system that waits on hold for you instead of you having to do it yourself. When an IRS agent finally picks up, their system calls your phone and connects you directly to the agent. The IRS doesn't know or care how you waited on hold - when they answer, you're the one who talks to them. It's basically like having someone stand in a physical line for you - when it's your turn, they call you to come up to the counter. The IRS is aware these services exist and they're completely legitimate. It saved me hours of listening to hold music and repeatedly getting disconnected.

I need to eat my words about Claimyr. After posting that skeptical comment, I was so frustrated with my own tax situation that I decided to try it anyway. I had nothing to lose after spending 3 hours on hold with the IRS yesterday only to get disconnected. The service actually worked exactly as advertised - I got a call back in about 90 minutes connecting me directly to an IRS rep. Turns out my return had been flagged for identity verification (which they never notified me about). The agent walked me through verifying my identity right there on the phone and told me my refund should process within 3 weeks. Already seeing my transcript updated online. Can't believe I wasted so much time trying to call them myself.

Have you checked your tax transcript? Sometimes that has more info than the "Where's My Refund" tool. Log into your IRS account and look for the transcript. It might have codes that tell you why there's a delay. Usually code 570 means there's a hold on your account and code 971 means they sent you a notice. If you see those, you'll probably get a letter explaining what's going on.

Thanks for this tip! I just checked my transcript and I do see code 570 from back in April and code 971 about two weeks later. But I never received any notice from them in the mail. Should I just keep waiting or try to call them?

If you see those codes but never received a notice, you should definitely call them. The 971 code means they sent (or were supposed to send) you a notice explaining the issue, and if you never got it, you won't know what action you need to take. The 570 code means there's a hold on your account that needs to be resolved before your refund can be processed. Without knowing what the specific issue is, it could remain on hold indefinitely. I'd recommend calling them as soon as possible to find out exactly what the hold is for and what you need to do to resolve it.

Happened to me too. Filed in Feb, didn't get my refund until August. Turns out they thought my W-2 info was suspicious because my employer messed up some reporting. Never got any notification about it! The IRS is terrible at communicating. Did you move recently? Sometimes they send notices to old addresses.

How did you finally find out about the W-2 issue? Did they eventually send you a letter or did you have to call?
