Missouri state refund waiting forever? Filed 4 months ago but still 'being processed'

Has anyone from Missouri received their state tax refund yet? I filed electronically with direct deposit in March 2025 (4 months ago now!) and I'm still waiting. The state website just says "Your return is being processed" with no other details. I called the Missouri Department of Revenue yesterday and the rep confirmed they have my return but said it was "still in the processing queue" and couldn't give me any timeline. The most frustrating part is that I got my federal refund within 3 weeks! My refund amount is around $1,250 and I really need that money. The rep mentioned something about "additional verification" but wouldn't elaborate. I checked my return multiple times and everything is accurate. Anyone else stuck in the same situation or have any advice?

I work as a tax preparer in Missouri. This delay is unfortunately common this year. The state implemented new fraud prevention measures that are causing significant delays for many filers. If your return was flagged for "additional verification," it's likely part of their random selection process, not necessarily because there's a problem with your return. Here's what you can do: 1. Keep checking the "Where's My Refund" tool on the Missouri DOR website (dor.mo.gov) 2. Request a formal status update by sending a secure message through their taxpayer portal 3. If it's been more than 120 days, you can file a taxpayer advocate request 4. Make sure your bank account information was entered correctly 5. Verify that your address is current with the state The good news is that if they're taking longer than 45 days from the filing deadline, they're required to pay interest on your refund. Hang in there, many people are experiencing the same issue this year.

0 coins

Thanks for the detailed response! I didn't know about the interest payment - that's at least something. Do you know how many people are experiencing these delays? The rep made it sound like just a few returns.

0 coins

From what I've seen in our office, about 35-40% of Missouri returns are facing extended delays this year. The reps are downplaying it but it's definitely a widespread issue. The interest is small (only about 3%) but better than nothing!

The same thing happened to me last year. I ended up calling every week until they finally procssed mine. The squeaky wheel gets the grease 🤷‍♂️

I was in the exact same situation with my Missouri return earlier this year. After weeks of frustration and getting nowhere with phone calls, I tried using taxr.ai to figure out what was going on. It's this tool that analyzes your tax transcript and explains exactly what's happening in plain English. Within minutes I understood my return was flagged for identity verification (something the state rep never told me). I was able to submit the right documentation and got my refund 10 days later. Seriously a game changer for understanding what's actually happening behind the scenes with your taxes instead of the vague info you get from reps. https://taxr.ai

0 coins

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

0 coins

It does way more than just read the transcript. It analyzes all the codes and dates, explains what each status means, tells you what to expect next and when, and even catches potential issues before they become problems. It helped me identify that my return needed a specific form for identity verification that nobody at the tax office mentioned. Honestly wish I'd found it sooner instead of wasting hours on hold and getting nowhere.

0 coins

Just tried it and WOW. This thing is incredible! It explained all these weird codes on my transcript that have been driving me crazy. Turns out my refund was delayed because of a math error that was corrected but nobody ever told me. Now I can see exactly when to expect my money. Everyone dealing with the IRS needs to know about this tool!

0 coins

Is this legit? Sounds too good to be true tbh

0 coins

100% legit. I was skeptical too but it actually delivers what it promises. Saved me from calling the IRS for the 100th time and getting different answers each time. I'm telling all my friends about it now.

After 3 months of waiting for my Missouri refund and getting nowhere with the regular channels, I finally got through to a real agent using the Claimyr app. Made all the difference! Got connected to someone who actually looked at my file instead of reading from a script, and they found that my return was stuck in some verification queue with no one assigned to it. The agent manually moved it forward and my refund was deposited a week later. Talking to a real person who could actually help was the best money I've ever spent - claimyr.com if anyone else is frustrated with the endless hold times.

0 coins

Does this really work? The Missouri DOR phone system is IMPOSSIBLE to navigate

0 coins

It absolutely works. I spent 6 hours over 3 days trying to get through the normal way. With Claimyr, I got a callback in about 40 minutes with a real human who actually had access to look at my specific case. Night and day difference.

0 coins

is this like one of those services where you pay for them to wait on hold for you?

0 coins

Yeah but it's more sophisticated than that. They navigate the phone tree for you and actually secure your spot in the callback queue, which is nearly impossible to do yourself these days. For me it was worth every penny because I would have never gotten through otherwise.

0 coins

Just used it after seeing your comment and it worked perfectly! Got a callback in about an hour and found out my refund was held up because they couldn't verify my W-2. Problem solved in one call when I'd been trying for weeks on my own!

0 coins

I'm also in MO and mine was delayed for FIVE months. Filed in Feb, didn't get my refund until July. They kept saying it was "in process" but turns out they needed additional verification of my income and never bothered to tell me 🤬 Apparently there's a huge backlog this year.

0 coins

Same exact thing happened to my wife! They told us it was "randomly selected for review" but wouldn't tell us what they were reviewing or how long it would take.

0 coins

Did you ever get any letter or notice about needing verification? I'm worried they're trying to contact me but I haven't received anything.

0 coins

Nope, that was the most frustrating part! I only found out they needed verification when I finally got through to someone on the phone who actually checked my file. Nothing was ever mailed to me.

Im in Kansas (neighbor to MO) and the same things happening here. Filed in April and still waiting. Called 3 times and got 3 different answers. First it was "just be patient", then it was "we need to verify something", then it was "system issue". At this point im convinced they're just holding onto our money as long as possible to collect interest on it. 🤡

0 coins

I had the same frustrating experience. Found out there's a way to escalate with Missouri DOR by contacting your state representative. They have liaisons who can cut through the red tape. Worked for me - got my refund 2 weeks after my state rep's office contacted them. Worth a try if you've been waiting more than 90 days.

0 coins

Thanks for the tip! How did you contact your rep? Did you just call their office?

0 coins

Yep, just called their district office and explained the situation. They had me fill out a form authorizing them to inquire about my tax situation, then they contacted their DOR liaison. Much faster than waiting in the regular queue!

0 coins

This happns every year with Missouri. They're notorious for slow refunds. I've lived in 3 states and MO has been by far the worst. Last year I waited 6 months. This year I adjusted my withholding so I wouldn't get a refund because I didn't want to deal with this garbage again.

0 coins

Smart move. I did the same thing after waiting 4 months last year. Better to break even than give the state an interest-free loan.

0 coins

wish i'd known this before moving to missouri last yr 😫 nobdy warned me about the tax nightmre

0 coins

Check if there was a math error on your return. My MO refund was delayed because I apparently added wrong somewhere (even though I used tax software). They fixed it but didn't tell me, and it added 2 months to processing. Try calling again and specifically ask if there were any adjustments or corrections made to your return.

0 coins

PSA: If youre having issues with Missouri state tax and need answers, don't waste time with the general phone line. Call this number instead: 573-751-3505 - it's the taxpayer advocate office. They actually have the authority to look into specific cases. Saved me weeks of frustration.

0 coins

THANK YOU for this! Just called and got through in 5 minutes. They told me my return was flagged because I had a name change this year (got married) but failed to update my driver's license. Now I know what to fix!

0 coins

Just tried calling and they said I need a case reference number before they can help. Did you need one?

0 coins

No, I didn't need a case number. Try calling again - you might have gotten someone who doesn't want to do the work. Just tell them it's been over 90 days and you've already tried the normal channels.

0 coins

I'm in Missouri too, and in my experience, the later you file, the faster you get your refund. I filed in late May (right before the deadline with extension) and got my refund in 3 weeks. My friend who filed in February is STILL waiting. It's like they prioritize the newer returns to keep their stats looking good. Totally backwards.

0 coins

That's so messed up but I think you're right. My colleague filed April 14th and got his refund in 2 weeks. I filed in January and waited until June. Makes zero sense.

0 coins

Im an accountant and the MO Department of Revenue is a disaster this year. They implemented a new computer system that was supposed to speed things up, but it's actually causing massive delays. About 40% of my clients are experiencing extended waits, especially those who claimed certain credits or had any changes from last year (address change, name change, filing status change, etc).

0 coins

What about paper returns? I mailed mine cause I had to attach documentation. Is that even worse?

0 coins

Paper returns are running 6-8 months right now. They're basically at the bottom of the priority list. If you have the option to amend and file electronically, I would strongly consider it even if it means paying again.

0 coins

Do you know if they're working refunds in order of filing date or is it completely random?

0 coins

It's supposed to be in order of receipt, but from what I'm seeing, returns with certain characteristics get grouped together. Simple returns with no credits or deductions seem to be processed quickly while more complex returns get shuffled into various review queues. It's definitely not strictly chronological.

0 coins

what I don't understand is why the feds can process refunds so much faster than states. I got my federal refund in 11 days but MO is taking months? They have way fewer returns to process!

0 coins

my refund was stuck for 3 months until I checked my transcript with taxr.ai and realized they were waiting for verification of my property tax credit. The tool showed exactly what was missing and where my return was stuck in the process. After I submitted the missing documentation, I had my refund in 2 weeks. Highly recommend checking out https://taxr.ai if youre stuck in limbo

0 coins

how does taxr.ai work with state returns? i thought it was just for federal

0 coins

It's primarily for federal, but in my case it showed that my federal return had a flag that was affecting my state return too (they share verification data). Once I fixed the federal issue, the state processed within days.

0 coins

Have u checked if ur bank rejected the direct deposit? This happened to me - turns out my bank rejected the deposit because the name on the account didn't exactly match my tax return (I had my middle initial on one but not the other). The state never notified me and just put me back in the processing queue. I had to call multiple times to figure it out.

0 coins

I didn't even think about this! I'll check with my bank. I recently got married so my name on the account might not match exactly what's on my return. Thanks for the tip!

0 coins

The crazy thing is they charge you interest and penalties if YOU'RE late, but when THEY are late with your refund? Crickets. The whole system is designed to work against regular people. 🙄

0 coins

Not entirely true. They do have to pay interest on delayed refunds, but only after 45 days from the filing deadline (not your filing date). The interest rate is pathetically low though.

0 coins

Wow I didn't know they paid interest at all! Still seems unfair that we get hit with penalties immediately but they get a 45 day grace period. But I guess I'll take what I can get lol

0 coins

After 2 months of waiting and getting nowhere with the MO dept of revenue, I used Claimyr to get through to someone who could actually help. The agent found my return was stuck because they couldn't verify my property tax statement - something no one had bothered to tell me! Got it resolved in one call and had my money a week later. Best decision I made instead of hanging on hold forever. claimyr.com totally worth it.

0 coins

ok so i keep seeing people mention this claimyr thing... does it actually work for state tax depts or just IRS?

0 coins

It works for both! They have options for most state tax departments too. The service basically navigates the phone maze and gets you in the callback queue without having to wait on hold yourself. Saved me hours of frustration.

0 coins

Plot twist: they already sent your refund but it got lost in the mail. This happened to me last year - they said it was "processing" but they had actually mailed a check that never arrived. I had to wait 8 weeks before they would reissue it. Make sure to specifically ask if they mailed anything to you.

0 coins

I'm guessing u claimed the property tax credit? They're auditing almost 100% of those this year. My sister works at the MO DOR and said they're prioritizing people who respond to their letters. Problem is, half the time the letters never get sent or delivered. Try checking if u have any messages in your online account.

0 coins

I didn't claim any property tax credit, but I'll definitely check my online account. I didn't even know they had a messaging system there! Thanks for the insider info.

0 coins

this is why i always adjust my withholding to get as close to $0 refund as possible. never give the government an interest-free loan of your money that they can take their sweet time returning!

0 coins

I'm dealing with the exact same issue! Filed my Missouri return in February and still nothing. The "being processed" message has been showing for months now. What's really frustrating is that I called three different times and got three completely different explanations - first they said it was random verification, then they said there was a system backlog, and the third person told me they were reviewing my W-2 information. It's like they have no idea what's actually happening with individual returns. At this point I'm convinced they're just buying time and hoping we'll forget about our refunds. The lack of transparency is incredibly frustrating when you're counting on that money.

0 coins

I'm experiencing the exact same frustrating situation! Filed my Missouri return in early March and it's been sitting in "processing" limbo for over 4 months now. The lack of communication is maddening - I've called multiple times and each rep gives me a different vague explanation about "additional verification" or "system reviews" but nobody can tell me what specifically they need or when it might be resolved. What's particularly annoying is that my federal return was processed and refunded within 2 weeks, but Missouri seems to have no sense of urgency whatsoever. I'm owed about $900 and really need that money for some unexpected medical bills that came up. From reading all these comments, it sounds like this is a widespread issue affecting thousands of Missouri taxpayers this year. The new computer system rollout seems to have created a massive bottleneck, and their customer service clearly isn't equipped to handle the volume of frustrated people calling for answers. I'm going to try some of the suggestions mentioned here - particularly calling the taxpayer advocate office and checking if my state rep can help escalate this. It's ridiculous that we have to jump through all these hoops just to get our own money back that they're legally required to process in a reasonable timeframe. Thanks for posting this - at least now I know I'm not alone in this nightmare!

0 coins

I'm in the same boat! Filed in March and still waiting too. The medical bills situation makes it even more stressful - I hope you get some relief soon. Based on what I'm reading here, it sounds like the taxpayer advocate office number someone shared (573-751-3505) might be our best bet for getting real answers instead of the runaround. I'm definitely going to try that tomorrow. It's crazy that so many of us are going through this same nightmare with Missouri this year!

I'm in the exact same situation! Filed my Missouri return in March and it's now been over 4 months of waiting with nothing but that generic "being processed" message. What's really frustrating is that I've called multiple times and gotten completely different explanations each time - first it was "routine processing," then "additional verification needed," and most recently "system delays." It's like they're just making stuff up at this point. The worst part is I got my federal refund in less than 3 weeks, so clearly the issue is with Missouri's system, not my return. I'm owed about $1,100 and really need that money for some car repairs that came up unexpectedly. Reading through all these comments, it's clear this is a massive statewide problem affecting thousands of taxpayers. The fact that they implemented a new computer system that's actually making things WORSE instead of better is just typical government incompetence. And the complete lack of transparency about what's actually happening with individual returns is infuriating. I'm definitely going to try calling that taxpayer advocate number someone mentioned (573-751-3505) and see if my state representative can help escalate this. It's ridiculous that we have to jump through all these hoops just to get our own money back. Thanks for posting this - at least now I know I'm not going crazy and this really is as bad as it seems!

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this too! The inconsistent answers from different reps is the most maddening part - it really does feel like they're just making things up to get us off the phone. I've been in the same boat since filing in early March, and like you said, the federal refund came quickly so we know our returns are fine. It's definitely worth trying that taxpayer advocate number - from what others have shared, they seem to have more authority to actually look into specific cases rather than just reading from a script. Fingers crossed we both get some real answers soon! The car repair situation makes it even more stressful when you're counting on that money.

I'm going through the exact same nightmare! Filed my Missouri return electronically in early March and I'm still stuck in that endless "being processed" loop after 4+ months. Like you, I got my federal refund super quickly (about 2 weeks) but Missouri seems to be in complete chaos this year. What's really frustrating is the total lack of communication - I've called their customer service line probably 6 times now and every single rep gives me a different story. First it was "normal processing delays," then "additional verification required," then "system upgrades causing backlogs." It's like they're just throwing darts at a board of excuses. I'm owed about $980 and really counting on that money for some home repairs that can't wait much longer. The fact that they can hold onto OUR money indefinitely while giving us zero concrete information about timelines is absolutely infuriating. From reading all these comments, it's clear this is affecting thousands of Missouri taxpayers and their new computer system has been a complete disaster. I'm definitely going to try calling that taxpayer advocate number (573-751-3505) that someone shared - seems like they might actually have the authority to look into specific cases instead of just reading from a script. Thanks for posting this! At least now I know I'm not alone in this mess and there might be some actual solutions to try.

I'm in Missouri and going through the exact same frustrating situation! Filed my return electronically in March and it's been over 4 months of that same "being processed" message with zero useful information. What makes it even more maddening is that I've called 4 different times and gotten 4 completely different explanations - everything from "routine review" to "identity verification" to "system maintenance delays." It's clear they have no idea what's actually happening with individual cases. Like you, I got my federal refund within 2 weeks, so I know my return is fine. Missouri's new system has obviously created a massive mess and they're clearly overwhelmed but won't admit it. I'm owed $1,400 and desperately need it for childcare expenses. Based on what I'm seeing in these comments, I'm going to try that taxpayer advocate number (573-751-3505) tomorrow and also reach out to my state rep's office. It's ridiculous that we have to become private investigators just to get our own money back! Thanks for posting this - it's somewhat comforting to know thousands of us are stuck in the same bureaucratic nightmare.

I feel your pain! Just went through something similar - filed in February and waited 5 months before finally getting my refund last week. The "routine review" excuse is what they told me too, but it turned out they had flagged my return because I moved addresses during the tax year and they couldn't verify my new address with their records. Nobody bothered to tell me this until I finally got through to someone who actually looked at my file instead of reading from a script. Try asking specifically if there are any address verification issues or if they need any documentation from you. Sometimes they're waiting for something but never actually request it! Hope you get your $1,400 soon - the childcare expense situation makes it so much more stressful when you're counting on that money.

I'm owed about $850 and really need it for unexpected veterinary bills for my dog. That taxpayer advocate number has been mentioned by several people here as actually helpful, so definitely worth trying.
