Got my federal refund weeks ago but Missouri state refund still missing - who to contact?

Filed my taxes back in late January and received my federal refund on March 12th, but my Missouri state refund is nowhere to be found. It's been over 5 weeks now and I'm starting to get nervous. I've tried checking the status online but keep getting a message saying "processing" with no estimated date. Does anyone know who I should call to get some answers? The MO Department of Revenue website is practically useless and I can't find a direct number that actually connects to a human. Has anyone else from Missouri experienced delays with their state refund this year?

Missouri DOR has been super slow this year. You can try calling 573-751-3505 for the income tax department. Try calling early in the morning when they first open (8am) for best chance to get through. Another option is to use the "Where's My Refund" tool on their website (dor.mo.gov/returnstatus). If it's been more than 8 weeks and you still don't have it, that's when you might need to start pushing harder. The state has up to 45 days to process returns before they technically owe you interest on your refund.

Thank you! I'll try calling that number tomorrow morning. The website status checker just says "processing" and has for weeks. So frustrating.

I spent HOURS trying to call that number last week. Keep hitting redial, youll get through eventually. took me like 18 tries 🙄

0 coins

the 45 days thing is real. I called and they literally told me "we still have X days before we legally have to give you your money back" like wow thanks

Yeah the states don't seem to care as much as the IRS does about getting refunds out quickly. And they're always understaffed.

I was in the exact same situation with my Missouri return. After spending days trying to figure out what was happening, I finally used taxr.ai to understand what was going on. It analyzed my transcript and showed me exactly where the holdup was - turns out there was a discrepancy in my reported state withholding that I never would have caught myself. They explained everything in plain English and showed me exactly what to do next. Honestly wish I'd found it sooner instead of stressing for weeks. Check it out at https://taxr.ai if you're trying to make sense of what's happening with your refund.

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

0 coins

It's actually amazing! You upload your docs and it does a deep analysis of everything - shows you what codes mean, identifies issues, explains next steps, and even gives you timelines. Saved me so much headache trying to decipher tax jargon. Truly the best tool I've found - wish I'd known about it years ago!

another tax service promising miracles 🙄 sure

0 coins

I was skeptical too but it's nothing like those other services. This one actually delivers. My return was stuck for 2 months and within minutes I understood exactly why and what to do. Not exaggerating when I say it's a game changer if you're dealing with tax problems.

After dealing with the same issue for my Missouri refund, I finally got through to a real person using this app called Claimyr (claimyr.com). Basically skips the whole hold time thing and had an agent calling me back in like 30 minutes. The agent told me there was a verification flag on my return and they needed additional info. Got it sorted in one call and my refund showed up a week later. Totally worth it when you consider how many hours you waste trying to get through on your own.

0 coins

wait this seems sketchy... how does that even work?

0 coins

Not sketchy at all - they basically wait on hold for you and when they reach an agent, they connect the call to your phone. Saved me like 3 hours of hold music. Honestly the best $20 I've spent all year considering I got my $900 refund released.

0 coins

can confirm this works. my buddy told me about it and I was able to get someone on the phone in like an hour vs the DAYS i spent trying before

Missouri is the WORST with refunds. Last year I didn't get mine until JUNE when I filed in January. Never got a straight answer about why. Their system is a joke.

0 coins

I'm in the same boat as you - got federal in February but still waiting on Missouri. Called them yesterday and they said they're "experiencing higher than normal volume of returns" (same excuse every year lol) and to allow 10-12 weeks from filing date. So annoying when they take our money instantly but take forever to give it back.

0 coins

its literally OUR money too!!! like theyre not doing us a favor by giving it back. drives me crazy 😤

0 coins

Exactly! They act like they're being generous by returning our own money. The 10-12 week timeframe is ridiculous.

0 coins

Did you file electronically or paper? Paper returns take FOREVER with Missouri. Also, did you have any unusual credits or deductions? Sometimes those trigger manual reviews.

0 coins

I filed electronically through TurboTax in January. Pretty straightforward return - just W2 income and standard deduction. Nothing that should trigger any flags!

0 coins

Hmm that's weird then. Definitely call that number someone else posted. Could be something simple like they need to verify your identity.

0 coins

This happens to me almost every year and I've lived in MO my whole life. Pro tip: when you call, select the option for "errors on my return" even if there aren't any. Those agents can actually help with status updates and tend to have shorter wait times than the general refund status line.

Same issue here! Im in Missouri too. Got my federal weeks ago but still waiting on state. The website is a JOKE. Says "due to high volume" blah blah. I finally broke down and used this thing called taxr.ai and it actually explained whats going on with my refund and why its delayed. Super helpful - https://taxr.ai

another ad? 🙄 how much they paying you lol

0 coins

Not an ad dude. I was at my wits end after waiting 9 weeks. Just sharing what worked for me. My return had a verification hold I didn't know about until I used this. Believe what you want 🤷‍♂️

0 coins

I tried that site too after seeing it on another thread. It's legit - saved me from having to call and wait on hold for hours. Shows you exactly what's happening with your refund.

0 coins

Check if you had any offsets or if you owe anything to the state! My buddy didn't get his refund because he had an old parking ticket from 2019 that went to collections and they took it out of his refund without telling him.

0 coins

Oof that's rough. I don't have any outstanding debts that I know of but I'll definitely check. Thanks for the tip!

Try looking up the Missouri Tax Return Refund Status on Google. You just need your SSN and the exact refund amount you're expecting. My wife waited 3 months last year and we finally found out they had mailed a letter requesting more information that we never received. The online status never updated to show this 🤬

0 coins

This!!! They NEVER update the online status correctly. It's either "received" or "processed" with nothing in between even when there are issues.

When I was struggling with a similar issue, I used this tool called taxr.ai that analyzed my return and showed me exactly what was happening with my refund. It found that Missouri had a verification hold on my return they never told me about. I was able to call in with the exact info I needed to resolve it. It saved me weeks of waiting and wondering - highly recommend checking out https://taxr.ai

I'm in Illinois but same situation. Got federal mid-Feb but state is still "processing". I called about 50 times and finally got through. They told me they're prioritizing returns with balances due over refunds 😡 Apparently they're allowed to take up to 14 weeks before they legally have to pay interest on delayed refunds so they're taking their sweet time.

0 coins

thats absolute BULL. we should charge THEM interest when we owe taxes and are late 💯

0 coins

Happens every year. The states are always cash-strapped so they slow-walk refunds while fast-tracking the money coming in. Tale as old as time.

0 coins

Try contacting your state representative! No joke - I did this last year when my refund was stuck for 3 months. Their office made one call and suddenly my refund was processed within days. They have special channels to the revenue department that regular citizens don't.

0 coins

That's actually a really good idea, thanks! If I don't get anywhere with calling directly I'll definitely try this.

0 coins

I've been calling the missouri dept of revenue for weeks with no luck getting through. Finally used claimyr.com to get a callback from an agent. Found out they flagged my return for ID verification but never sent me a letter! Got it cleared up in one call and my refund was issued the next day. Best decision I made after weeks of frustration.

0 coins

how much does that service cost? seems like we shouldn't have to pay just to talk to someone at the govt we already pay for with our taxes 🙄

0 coins

Honestly after spending hours on hold over multiple days and losing time off work, the cost was nothing compared to finally getting my $1200 refund processed. Sometimes you gotta spend a little to save a lot of headache.

FYI for anyone dealing with Missouri tax refund issues - there's a direct email you can use: income@dor.mo.gov. Include your full name, last 4 of SSN, and a brief description of your issue. I got a response within 48 hours when I couldn't get through on the phone. Worth a try before spending hours on hold!

0 coins

Thank you so much for this! Will definitely try the email route if I can't get through by phone tomorrow.

0 coins

I tried this last week and still haven't heard back. Your mileage may vary I guess.

Has anyone else noticed how the states are getting worse every year with refund processing? My theory is they're holding our money as long as legally possible to earn interest on it. It's such a scam.

0 coins

100% this is what's happening. They can hold onto billions of dollars for an extra month or two and make millions in interest. It's our money but they treat it like it's theirs to play with.

0 coins

For what its worth, I'm in Missouri and filed in early February. Got federal about 2 weeks later but state just hit my account yesterday. So they are processing them, just super slowly. I did absolutely nothing - no calls or follow ups. Just patience (though it was frustrating).

0 coins

That gives me a little hope! How much was your refund if you don't mind me asking? I'm wondering if they prioritize smaller amounts.

0 coins

Mine was around $650. Not sure if amount matters but could be!

I had a comprehensive analysis of my tax situation done at taxr.ai and it completely changed my understanding of what was happening with my return. They identified exactly where in the process my refund was stuck and what I needed to do to get it moving. The detailed explanation of all my transcript codes and what they actually mean was incredibly helpful. Don't waste time guessing what's going on - https://taxr.ai

Missouri is terrible with refunds but theres a trick - if you owe them money they will process your return in DAYS 🤣 but if they owe you? Expect to wait months. When you call make sure to sound annoyed but not angry, the nice reps will help you more.

0 coins

Isnt it crazy how we have to jump through so many hoops just to get OUR OWN MONEY back??? The whole system is designed to be frustrating on purpose I swear.

0 coins

Totally agree. And then they have the nerve to charge penalties and interest the second we're late paying them 🙃

I went through this exact same thing with Missouri last year! After weeks of "processing" status and no luck getting through on the phone, I discovered that Missouri DOR sometimes has issues with their automated systems not updating properly. What finally worked for me was filing a formal inquiry through their website - there's a "Contact Us" form specifically for refund issues that goes to a different department than the phone lines. I got a response within 3 business days explaining that my return had been flagged for a routine audit review (nothing wrong, just random selection) and they expedited it once I responded to their inquiry. Also, if you have direct deposit set up, double-check that your bank account info was entered correctly - a surprising number of delays are due to rejected deposits that bounce back to the state. Hope this helps and you get your refund soon!

0 coins

This is super helpful! I didn't even know there was a separate contact form for refund issues. I've been trying to call for weeks with no luck. Going to try this approach right now - hopefully I get a response like you did. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I'm dealing with the exact same frustration with Missouri! Filed in late January, got my federal refund quickly, but Missouri is still showing "processing" with no timeline. It's ridiculous that we have to become detectives just to figure out what's happening with our own money. I've been checking the status online daily and it never changes. Reading through all these comments, it sounds like Missouri DOR is just chronically understaffed and slow. Going to try calling that 573-751-3505 number first thing tomorrow morning, and if that doesn't work I'll try the email route someone mentioned. It's frustrating that some people are having to pay for third-party services just to get basic information about their refunds. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - at least I know I'm not alone in this mess!
