State Return Accepted & Paid but Federal Return Still on Hold - Why the Difference?

Filed my taxes back in February and got my state refund within 2 weeks but federal is still showing as processing. How can one be so fast and the other so slow? Starting to get worried since its been months now. Anyone else dealing with this? Already tried calling the IRS multiple times but cant get through to anyone.

This is actually pretty common. State and federal returns are processed completely separately by different agencies. States typically have fewer returns to process and simpler verification systems. The IRS handles hundreds of millions of returns and has more extensive fraud detection protocols. Have you checked your transcript for any codes or notices?

I didnt even know I could check for codes! How do I access my transcript?

You can get them on irs.gov/transcripts - but fair warning the site can be a pain to navigate 😩

Hey! Instead of trying to decode your transcript yourself (which can be super confusing), try using taxr.ai - it's this new tool that analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly what's going on and when to expect your refund. It costs $1 but saved me hours of headache trying to figure out all those crazy codes 🙌 https://taxr.ai

Does it actually work? Sounds too good to be true tbh

100% works! It showed me I had a verification hold I didnt even know about and told me exactly what to do next

Just tried it and OMG where has this been all my life?! So much better than guessing what all those codes mean 🙏

Check if you claimed any credits like EIC or CTC. Those always take longer to process cause the IRS has to verify everything.

This happened to me too! Filed in January and state refund came in 10 days but federal took 4 months. Turns out I had a code 570 hold on my account for additional review. The key is definitely checking your transcript like others mentioned - it'll show you exactly what's happening. Don't panic though, as long as there's no notice about errors in your return, it's probably just routine verification. The wait is brutal but you'll get it eventually!
