Filed federal return 3/15, no pending refund yet but state refund came through already - should I be concerned?

I filed my federal and state taxes together on March 15th and I'm getting nervous. My state refund showed as pending for about a day before it was deposited into my account last week. However, when I check my federal refund status, there's absolutely nothing showing as pending. It's now April 8th, so it's been over 3 weeks. Is this normal? Should I be worried that my federal refund isn't even showing as pending yet while my state came through so quickly?

Diego Chavez

Don't worry too much yet. Federal and state processing systems are completely separate entities that work at different speeds. Your state refund coming quickly doesn't necessarily mean anything about your federal return. The IRS standard processing time is 21 days for e-filed returns, but can take longer depending on various factors including identity verification checks, certain credits claimed, or simply high volume periods. If you've passed the 21-day mark, you can try calling the IRS refund hotline at 800-829-1954 or checking "Where's My Refund" on irs.gov with your SSN, filing status and exact refund amount. If that doesn't show anything, give it another week before getting too concerned.

Thanks for the reassurance. I've been checking Where's My Refund daily but nothing shows up yet. I'll give it until next week before I start freaking out completely!

I had the same thing happen last year. State came in 9 days, federal took almost 6 weeks. No rhyme or reason to it.

The where's my refund tool is so hit or miss tho. Mine was stuck on 'processing' for 2 months last year when I had already recieved my refund lol

I was in this exact situation last month and was getting super stressed trying to figure out what was happening. I decided to try taxr.ai after seeing it mentioned here and it was incredibly helpful! Their system actually explained exactly what was happening with my return by analyzing my transcript and showed me where my refund was in the process. So much better than trying to decode all this IRS stuff on my own! Definitely check it out: https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It's amazing actually! It analyzes all your tax data and explains everything in plain english. My transcript had all these weird codes that made no sense to me, but taxr showed me exactly what stage my refund was at and when I could expect it. It also caught a small error that would have delayed things further. Seriously the best tool I've found during this whole frustrating process!

Yes there is a fee but TOTALLY worth it for the peace of mind. I was driving myself crazy trying to understand my transcript. This tool saved me hours of stress and googling random tax codes 🙌

After waiting almost 5 weeks for my federal refund and not seeing anything on the IRS website, I finally used the Claimyr app (claimyr.com) and it was a game changer. Got connected to an actual IRS agent within 30 minutes instead of waiting on hold for hours. The agent told me my return was flagged for a simple verification and they cleared it right away. My refund was deposited 8 days later. Honestly wish I'd done this sooner instead of stressing for weeks.

Idk sounds sketchy. How does it even work? They just call the IRS for you?

Not sketchy at all - they basically navigate the IRS phone system for you and when they get an agent on the line, they call you to connect. Saved me from spending hours on hold. Talking to an actual person got my refund unstuck immediately. Worth every penny considering I was waiting on a $3400 refund!

I used it last week after my refund was stuck in processing hell for 2 months. Got an agent who found the issue right away - my employer had made a typo on my W2. Best money I've spent all year considering I was waiting on a $4600 refund.

The IRS is SO SLOW this year. I filed Feb 2 and didnt get my refund until March 29th. Meanwhile my state refund came in like 10 days. The IRS system is a dumpster fire. Just wait it out or try calling them (good luck with that lol

Federal is always slower than state in my experiance. Last 3 years my state came within 2 weeks and federal took 4-8 weeks depending on the year. Their still catching up from the pandemic backlog + they just don't have the staff to process things efficiently. As long as your return was accepted when you filed, your probly fine.

^^^^^ This. The IRS is working with systems from the stone age and half the staff they need. I worked in tax prep for 6 years - this is totally normal.

did you claim earned income tax credit or child tax credit? those automatically get delayed for review and can take an extra 2-3 weeks

0 coins

-

Chloe Robinson

I did claim child tax credit for my daughter, so maybe that's why? Didn't realize those automatically get reviewed.

yep, thats almost certainly why then. they review all returns with those credits to prevent fraud. they should release it soon, but it def takes longer

There are delays this season because of the PATH Act (protects against refund fraud). They are holding up MANY returns for review bc of identity theft concerns. I just had to wait 7 weeks or mine. Be patient, it will come.

Are u sure you actually filed both returns? Sometimes ppl think they filed both but the fed return gets rejected for some reason (wrong AGI from previous year, typo on SSN, etc) while the state goes through fine.

I'm pretty sure both were accepted. I used TurboTax and got confirmation emails for both. But now you've got me paranoid... going to double check my records! 😱

Def check the actual status on the IRS site, not just TurboTax. I thought my return was filed in Feb but it had been rejected and TurboTax never notified me. Lost a whole month waiting on something that wasn't even processing 🤦‍♂️

have you tried checking your transcript on the irs website? sometimes that shows processing info even when wheres my refund doesnt show anything. you need to make an account tho

I tried but couldn't verify my identity to create an account. So frustrating!

ugh that sucks. the ID verification is impossible for some ppl. maybe try that taxr.ai someone mentioned? I've heard it can help interpret transcripts if you get access

If you've waited more than 3 weeks since filing, I'd suggest getting your transcript from the IRS website (irs.gov/transcript). You'll need to create an account, but your transcript will show if your return has been received and where it is in processing. States are almost always faster than federal - I got my NY refund in 8 days but federal took 5 weeks.

Just had this happen to me!! State came quick but federal was nowhere to be found. I was getting really anxious and tried calling the IRS but kept getting busy signals. I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me through to an actual IRS person who told me they needed to verify my identity. I verified right there on the phone and my refund was approved 3 days later. Talking to a real person was the only way I found out what was going on.

It was the best money I've ever spent to finally get my questions answered. Considering I was waiting on thousands in my refund and had no idea what was happening, getting an actual answer was priceless. I spent weeks stressing before I finally tried it.

This is totally normal. Your state processes separately from federal and most states are much faster (they deal with way fewer returns). I wouldn't worry until you're past 4-6 weeks from filing. Also try checking the IRS2Go app - sometimes it updates before the website.

Same thing happened to me last year! Turns out my federal return got flagged for identity verification but they never sent me the letter. Had to call them to find out after waiting 8 weeks. Such a pain.

How did you even get through to someone? I've been calling for days and can't get past the automated system 😫

I called like 30 times over 2 days at different times. Finally got through at 7:01am right when they opened. Waited on hold for 1.5 hours tho.

pro tip: use claimyr.com - it was the only way I could talk to a live agent. saved me days of frustration and my refund got released 5 days after I talked to someone

Check if ur listed as a dependant on someone elses return. My BF had this happen and it turned out his parents had claimed him by mistake (he's 24 and hasn't lived with them for years). His state processed fine but federal got held up.

I recommend pulling ur tax transcript if u can. U can see EXACTLY wats happening with ur return. The IRS has specific codes that show if its being processed, under review, etc. I couldnt figure out why mine was delayed until I saw code 570 on my transcript which meant they were reviewing something. Much more useful than the generic "still processing" message on Where's My Refund.

This. The WMR tool is trash. Only transcripts give you real info.

If you're confused by transcript codes, check out taxr.ai - it explains what all the codes mean and actually tells you when to expect your refund based on your specific situation. Just used it last week and it was spot on!

had to file an identity theft affidavit (form 14039) and paper file my return. took almost 9 months to get my refund. not saying this is happening to u but better to check sooner than later!
