State refund already deposited on 3/15 but federal still showing as 'accepted' on TaxAct - what's happening?
I filed my taxes back on February 25th using TaxAct. My state refund was processed pretty quickly and got deposited to my bank account on March 15th. However, my federal return is still just showing as 'accepted' when I check the status on TaxAct. It's been almost 7 weeks now. When I try to check the Where's My Refund tool it just says my return is being processed and to check back later. Anyone know why there would be such a big difference between state and federal processing time? Should I be worried at this point? I was expecting to get both refunds around the same time.

This is actually completely normal. State and federal returns are processed by different agencies with different workloads and processes. The IRS (federal) typically takes longer than state tax agencies to process returns. Some factors that might be affecting your federal return processing time: • The IRS is still dealing with a backlog from previous years • Your return might have certain credits (like Earned Income Credit or Child Tax Credit) that require additional verification • There might be a mismatch between information on your return and information the IRS has • Your return might have been randomly selected for review The standard advice is to wait at least 21 days before getting concerned, but in reality many returns are taking 30-45+ days this year. If it's been more than 8 weeks, you could try calling the IRS directly at 1-800-829-1040, but be prepared for long wait times.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I do have the Child Tax Credit on my return, so maybe that's causing the delay? Does that normally slow things down?

Yes, returns with Child Tax Credit often take longer because the IRS verifies eligibility more carefully. They're trying to prevent fraud. Many people with CTC are seeing 6-8 week processing times this year.

I filed with Child Tax Credit too and it took almost 9 weeks to get my refund this year. The IRS is SLOW with anything involving credits.

I was in the exact same situation and was pulling my hair out trying to figure out what was going on with my federal refund. After weeks of checking the IRS site every day and getting nowhere, a friend recommended I try taxr.ai and it was a game changer! The tool analyzed my transcript and explained exactly why my return was stuck and what to expect next. It was so much better than trying to decode all the cryptic IRS codes myself. Made me feel so much better knowing exactly what was happening instead of wondering. Highly recommend checking it out (https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does way more than just read the transcript. It explains what all those weird codes mean in plain language, tells you if there are any issues with your return, and even gives you an estimated timeline for your refund based on your specific situation. Seriously saved me so much stress!

Ok I just tried taxr.ai and WOW. It showed me exactly why my refund was delayed (had to do with income verification) and even gave me a pretty accurate date for when I'd get my money. Way better than the useless IRS tool! Everyone dealing with tax refund headaches should use this!

Yes there is a fee but honestly it's worth every penny for the peace of mind. I spent weeks stressing and checking WMR daily before finding this. The detailed explanation alone was worth it.

After waiting almost two months for my federal refund with no updates, I finally got sick of waiting and used a calling service from claimyr.com that got me through to an actual IRS person! The rep I spoke with was able to tell me exactly what was holding up my return (there was a small discrepancy they needed to verify) and they released my refund right after our call. Had my money 5 days later. After weeks of not being able to get through the regular IRS phone line, this was such a relief. Best decision I've made dealing with this tax season nightmare.

wait is this an actual thing? how does it even work? sounds like a scam tbh

Not a scam at all! It basically holds your place in the phone queue with the IRS (you know how impossible it is to get through). When they have an agent on the line, you get a call connecting you directly with the IRS person. Saved me hours of redial hell, and resolved my issue in one call.

Can confirm this works. I tried calling the IRS for 2 weeks straight and kept getting disconnected because of high call volume. Used this service and had an IRS agent on the phone within an hour. talking to the agent released my refund that had been stuck for over 2 months. it was the only way I could talk to a live agent.

what info do they need from you? sounds sketchy to give your info to a 3rd party...

They don't need any personal info! They just connect you with the IRS, and then YOU talk directly to the IRS agent yourself. It's just a calling service that gets you through the impossible IRS phone system.

Yup, welcome to tax season 2025! States are way faster than federal. I got my colorado refund in 6 days and my federal took 7 weeks. The irs is just massively backlogged but they usually get to everyones return eventually.

Check your tax transcript on the IRS website if you can access it. It will give you more detailed info than the WMR tool. You'll need to create an account on irs.gov if you don't already have one. The transcript will show any holds or processing codes that might explain the delay.

I tried setting up an account but the verification process is such a pain. They wanted me to verify with a credit card but I dont have one, just a debit card. So frustrating.

Try the ID.me option. Thats how I got into my account when the credit card verification didn't work for me. You'll need your drivers license and to take a selfie video but it works.

If ur return has eitc or actc tax credits the IRS wont release ur refund untill mid february at the earliest. Its to prevent fraud. Also there could be an issue with identity verification. I had to verify my identity last year and it added like 6 weeks to my processing time 😑

same thing happened to me this year. got a letter in the mail asking to verify my identity thru id.me and then once i did that it took another 3 weeks to get my refund. so annoying.

I don't think I have to verify my identity, at least I haven't received any letters about it. But I did claim Child Tax Credit, so maybe that's slowing things down like others have said.

the IRS is so broken its ridiculous. We shouldnt have to wait months for our OWN MONEY to be returned to us. Other countries have automated tax systems but here we are playing games with the IRS every year 🤡

Exactly! In Europe most countries just send you a statement of what they think you owe, you verify it, and you're done. No software to buy, no waiting months for refunds, no stress.

Yup the US system is deliberately complicated because tax prep companies lobby to keep it that way. They make billions off our frustration 💰

And the customer service is a joke. Try calling them and see how long you wait. I've literally been hung up on after waiting 2 hours.

have you received any letters from the IRS in the mail? sometimes they need additional info but dont update the online status. check your mail carefully and dont ignore anything from them cuz that will delay things even more!

No letters yet. I've been checking my mail every day hoping for some kind of update, but nothing so far. That's why I'm starting to worry.

Tbh i wouldn't even worry about it until it's been at least 8 weeks. The IRS is absolutely swamped right now. I know it sucks waiting but unless you get a letter saying there's a problem, just assume it's normal processing delays.

I heard some returns are randomly selected for additional review through something called the income verification program. When that happens they don't tell you about it and it just sits there for weeks until someone looks at it. might be what happened to you?

That happened to me last year. No letter, no notification, just stuck for 11 weeks before suddenly getting approved. The IRS is the absolute worst at communication.

Same boat. Filed Feb 10, got my NY state refund Feb 28, federal still says "being processed" on WMR. Called the IRS and after 1.5 hours on hold was told "everything looks fine, just keep waiting." SUPER helpful 🙄

Did you eventually get your refund? If so, how long did it take after that 'keep waiting' response?

One thing to check - did you file electronically or by paper? Paper returns take WAAAAY longer (like 6+ months sometimes). And make sure TaxAct actually transmitted your return successfully - sometimes there can be a glitch where it shows accepted on your end but didn't actually complete the submission process.

I filed electronically. And it does show as 'accepted' on the WMR tool too, so I think it was successfully transmitted. Just stuck in processing limbo I guess.

The irs where's my refund tool is basically useless. It shows three stages: return received, refund approved, and refund sent. It stays on the first stage until you're literally about to get your money. There's no visibility into what's happening in between, which is super frustrating.

This! It's either "we got your return" or "your money is on the way" with absolutely no info about the weeks or months in between. Great system 🙄

Ok so I work as a tax prep professional and I'm seeing TONS of delays this year especially with returns that include dependents. The IRS is doing extra verification because of all the pandemic fraud over the last few years. If you have a straightforward return with W-2 income and standard deduction it's usually fast. Anything with business income, credits, or multiple sources of income is taking 6-12 weeks right now.

That makes so much sense! Mine has both business income AND child credits and it's been 10 weeks with no updates. At least now I know why.

Mine is pretty straightforward but I do have a dependent and claim the Child Tax Credit. Feels a bit unfair that parents have to wait longer, but I guess it makes sense they need to verify dependents.

Unfortunately yes, claiming children is one of the biggest flags right now because of all the fraud with child tax credits during the pandemic. Even legitimate claims are getting extra scrutiny.

Try downloading the IRS2Go app. Sometimes it has more updated info than the website. My WMR tool showed nothing but the app showed my direct deposit date.
