Arizona state tax refund stuck since March - no movement for 2 months
Filed my Arizona state taxes in early March and got the acceptance notification right away. But the refund status has been showing the same message 'Your return is being processed' since March 15, 2025. It's been over 2 months with zero movement. The processing date on the website hasn't changed at all. Called the AZ Dept of Revenue three times but kept getting automated messages saying they're experiencing high call volumes. Anyone else dealing with this or know what's going on with Arizona state refunds? This is ridiculous - I'm owed $643 and there's no explanation for the delay.

This is unfortunately common with Arizona this year. Their system is experiencing major delays due to increased fraud prevention measures. When you check your status online, look for a reference or confirmation number - write that down. Then try calling exactly at 8:00 AM when they open (not 8:01, exactly 8:00). Press option 3 then 2 to bypass some of the menus. They might ask for verification including your AZ driver's license number, so have that ready. If you filed electronically with direct deposit and your return is straightforward (no unusual credits or deductions), it should have been processed within 30 days. Since yours has gone beyond that, there's likely an identity verification hold or a manual review flag on your account. Don't panic - it doesn't mean you did anything wrong. Also check if your federal return has processed normally. Sometimes state delays are tied to federal verification issues.

â˘thanks for the detailed info! My federal was processed and deposited weeks ago, so it must be just az having issues. I'll try calling right at 8am tomorrow.

â˘I tried the 8am trick and still couldn't get thru! Had to call like 15 times before it even let me into the queue. Arizona's system is a joke đ¤Ą

â˘The trick is to not hang up if you get the busy signal. Stay on the line and eventually it will put you in the queue. Another option is to contact your state representative - seriously, their offices can sometimes help expedite tax issues.

Honestly I was in the exact same situation last month and I was going crazy trying to understand what was happening with my refund. I tried calling so many times and couldn't get through. I finally used this tool called taxr.ai that helped me understand exactly what was happening with my return and gave me the exact steps to resolve it. It showed me that there was an identity verification flag on my account that I needed to address. Saved me so much time and stress! https://taxr.ai

â˘Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?
0 coins
Melissa Lin
â˘It does WAY more than just read the transcript. It actually analyzes all your tax docs, identifies issues, explains what's happening in plain English, and gives you step-by-step instructions to fix things. For me it pointed out exactly where in the verification process I needed to submit additional docs. I cannot recommend it enough!

â˘Just tried taxr.ai after seeing your comment and WOW! It instantly showed me why my AZ refund was delayed - there was a mismatch between my reported withholding and what my employer reported. Would have NEVER figured that out on my own. This tool is literally a game-changer for dealing with tax nightmares. Worth every penny!!!

After waiting for 7 weeks with my AZ refund stuck, I finally got through to someone who could help. I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me a callback from the AZ revenue dept. Had to wait about 30 mins but finally spoke to someone who explained my return was flagged for a random review. The agent pushed it through while I was on the phone and I got my refund 5 days later. Talking to an actual human solved everything - best money i've spent all year to get my $890 refund released.

â˘Wait is this really a thing? Seems sketchy that you have to pay just to talk to a government agency you already pay taxes to lol

â˘yeah I thought the same thing at first but after spending HOURS on hold and getting disconnected repeatedly, I was desperate. It actually works - they somehow get you into the callback queue and an actual agent calls your phone. After weeks of frustration, it was worth it to finally get answers and get my refund moving.

â˘Does this work for federal tax issues too or just state?

Romeo Quest
â˘Works for both! I used it for the IRS first when I had a problem with my federal return, then realized it works for most state tax agencies too. Saved me from taking a day off work just to sit on hold.

Yep, I'm in the same boat. Filed in February and still waiting. AZ is always slow but this year is ridiculous. I heard they're short-staffed and implemented new verification procedures that are slowing everything down. My status hasn't changed in 10 weeks.

This is why I always have them take the maximum out of my checks. rather have em hold on to a thousand bucks of my money than owe even a penny, those mfs will charge you interest but they take forever to give us our money back with zero interest đ¤Ž

â˘That's giving the government an interest-free loan all year tho. Bad financial move bro

â˘dead serious. had to send in paper returns last year cause of some weird issue with my W2, and they apparently lost it. had to resend everything TWICE. finally got someone on the phone last month who said its being processed but still nothing. almost 14 months of waiting.

â˘You should contact your state representative. I had a similar issue last year and my rep's office fixed it in 3 weeks after I'd been waiting for 6 months

UPDATE: Just got my refund today after being stuck since February 28. No explanation, no notification, just showed up in my account. So there's hope! For reference I filed through TurboTax, very simple return, single no dependents.

Sunny Wang
â˘At least there's hope! Did you do anything special or it just randomly processed?
0 coins
Natalie Khan
â˘I didn't do anything special, it just suddenly processed. The only thing that happened was last week I created an account on the AZ dept of revenue website to check my status directly rather than through the turbotax tracker. Not sure if that triggered something or just coincidence.

I never got my AZ refund last year and ended up having to apply it to this year's taxes. Their system is completely broken. Make sure you document EVERYTHING, take screenshots of your status updates, confirmation emails, etc. You might need them later.

Arizona is having serious system issues this year. Check if your bank info is correct - I know someone who had the right account number but wrong routing number and that caused a huge delay. Also check that your address matches exactly what's on your W-2 - even small differences can flag your return for manual review.

â˘good tips, i'll double check all that info. I think everything should match but who knows

Anyone know if we get interest on delayed state refunds like we do with federal? Its been over 45 days for me too.
0 coins
Abigail bergen
â˘Arizona actually does pay interest on late refunds after 45 days from when you filed or the due date, whichever is later. But it's calculated from when you overpaid, not from when you filed. The rate is currently around 6% but it changes quarterly.

At this point I'm convinced the Arizona Dept of Revenue is just a guy named Dave with an Excel spreadsheet working in his garage. How is it possible for them to be THIS inefficient???

Contact your state representative! This fixed the issue for me after waiting 8 weeks. I emailed my rep with all my details (filing date, confirmation number, amount expected) and their office contacted revenue dept directly. Had my refund within 10 days after that.

Arizona's revenue department has been awful since the pandemic. Last year they held my refund for 3 months due to "identity verification" but never sent me any notification that I needed to verify anything! I only found out when I finally got through to someone on the phone. I suggest checking your mail carefully including spam folders to make sure you didn't miss a verification request. Also try checking your status with your SSN instead of the confirmation number sometimes that shows different info.

â˘You're scaring me now - I'm gonna check my mail more carefully. Did they send it certified or just regular mail?
0 coins
Toot-n-Mighty
â˘Just regular mail that looked like junk tbh. The envelope didn't even say it was from the state revenue department, it had some weird third-party name on it. Check for anything that mentions "important tax information" or "government verification".

DO NOT JUST WAIT. I made that mistake last year and ended up with a huge mess. Try this approach: 1. Call first thing in morning when they open 2. If that fails, send a message through their online portal (keep a copy) 3. After 7 days with no response, mail a certified letter requesting status 4. If still no response after 14 more days, contact your state representative Don't just sit around hoping it will magically process. Be proactive!

â˘this advice right here!! âď¸ learned the hard way too - they "lost" my return and I almost had to pay PENALTIES until I escalated with my rep

This year has been a nightmare for all tax stuff not just AZ. The IRS and state revenue departments are all backed up, understaffed, and dealing with tons of fraud. What worked for me was using a tool called taxr.ai that helped me see exactly what was happening with my tax stuff. It showed me there was a mismatch between my AZ withholding and what my employer reported, which was causing the delay. The tool gave me exact steps to fix it and my refund was processed within 2 weeks! https://taxr.ai

â˘Is this the same as those transcript reading services? I've been hesitant to try those
0 coins
DeShawn Washington
â˘No it's way better - it doesn't just read your transcript, it actually interprets everything and gives you specific actions to take. It found issues I would have never spotted and told me exactly what forms I needed to submit to fix things. I was skeptical too but it literally saved me hundreds of dollars in potential penalties by catching a reporting error.

Im in CA not AZ but had the same problem. Tried calling for WEEKS with no luck. Eventually used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to a real person and found out my return was stuck in review because my employer messed up my address on my W2. the agent fixed it on the spot and I got my refund. Talking to a human made all the difference after weeks of frustration.

â˘did it work the first time or did you have to try multiple times

â˘Worked the first time! Got a callback within about 45 minutes. Weirdly the agent who called seemed surprised I got through so quickly - she mentioned they were severely backlogged with calls. So worth it to skip that nightmare queue.

Check if you got a letter from them! I was in the exact same situation and turns out they had sent me a letter requesting additional documentation but it went to my old address even though I updated everything when I filed. You might want to call and check if they've sent you anything.

Does anyone know what the "your return is being processed" status actually means? Is that code for something specific or just their generic status?

Fatima Al-Rashid
â˘It's basically a catch-all that means "we have your return but haven't finished with it yet." Could mean it's in queue for processing, under review, flagged for verification, or just sitting in a pile waiting to be looked at. Totally useless status that tells you nothing helpful đ

I ended up contacting my state senator's office after waiting 3 months for my AZ refund. They have caseworkers who can reach out directly to the department of revenue. Had my refund within 2 weeks after they got involved. Don't waste time with the general customer service line.

I'm dealing with the exact same issue! Filed my AZ return on March 12th and it's been stuck on "being processed" ever since. Super frustrating especially when you see people who filed later already getting their refunds. I've tried calling but like everyone else, can't get through. One thing I noticed - when I check the status on the AZ website vs through my tax software, sometimes they show slightly different information. Have you tried checking directly on the AZ Dept of Revenue website with your SSN? Sometimes that shows more detailed status info than the generic tracker. Also keeping track of all the suggestions here - sounds like contacting state reps might be the way to go if the phone calls don't work out. This whole situation is ridiculous though - we shouldn't have to jump through hoops just to get our own money back!

I'm going through the exact same thing! Filed my AZ return on March 8th and it's been stuck on "Your return is being processed" for over 2 months now. The frustrating part is that my federal refund came through in less than 3 weeks, so it's definitely an Arizona-specific issue. I've been reading through all these comments and it sounds like there are a few things we can try: 1. Call right at 8:00 AM sharp when they open 2. Check the AZ Dept of Revenue website directly with our SSN instead of just using the confirmation number 3. Make sure all our info (address, bank details) exactly matches what's on our W-2 4. Contact our state representative if nothing else works The suggestions about taxr.ai and Claimyr are interesting too - might be worth trying if we can't get through the normal channels. It's ridiculous that we have to pay third parties just to get our own money back from the state, but at this point I'm desperate. Thanks for posting this - at least we know we're not alone in dealing with Arizona's broken system! Keep us updated if you make any progress.

â˘I'm in the exact same boat! Filed mine on March 5th and still stuck on that same useless "being processed" message. It's good to know I'm not the only one dealing with this nightmare. I tried the 8am calling trick yesterday but still couldn't get through after 20+ attempts. The idea about checking with SSN instead of confirmation number is smart - I hadn't thought of that. Going to try that today. Also thinking about reaching out to my state rep since multiple people here said that actually worked for them. This whole situation is insane - we file our taxes on time, do everything correctly, and then have to become private investigators just to figure out where our own money is! Arizona really needs to get their act together.

I'm experiencing the exact same issue! Filed my Arizona state return on March 20th and it's been stuck on "Your return is being processed" for almost 2 months now. My federal refund was deposited within 2 weeks, so this is definitely an Arizona problem. After reading all these comments, I'm going to try a few things: 1. Check the status using my SSN directly on the AZ Dept of Revenue website instead of just the confirmation number 2. Set my alarm for 7:59 AM tomorrow and call exactly at 8:00 AM 3. Double-check that my address and bank info exactly match what's on my W-2 If none of that works, I'll contact my state representative - seems like that's been the most successful approach for people here. It's absolutely ridiculous that we have to jump through all these hoops just to get our own money back, but at this point I'm willing to try anything. Thanks for starting this thread - it's somewhat comforting to know we're all dealing with the same broken system. Arizona really needs to fix their processing issues!
