State Refund Stuck on 'Pending Review' with No Estimated Date
Just got my federal refund processed in 11 days (filed on March 1st), but my state refund has been sitting at 'pending review' for over two weeks now. When I was in grad school last year, my state refund came through in 8 days flat. I've checked their online portal every day this week and there's zero movement - just 'pending review' with no estimated completion date. I've already called their general number twice and got nowhere with the automated system. This is completely unacceptable. I've triple-checked my return and everything matches my W-2s perfectly. They have no right to hold onto my money without at least giving me a timeline. Has anyone else dealt with this state review nonsense? I know my rights as a taxpayer and I'm not about to let them sit on my $1,200 indefinitely. 🤦

Have you checked if your state is experiencing processing delays this year? Many states have implemented additional fraud detection measures for 2024 which can trigger these reviews. I'm curious - does your state's portal show any specific status code or just the generic 'pending review' message?

What state are you in? This happened to me last year in Michigan and it took almost 45 days to resolve. Some states are worse than others with these random reviews.

Not OP, but I can confirm that as of April 12, 2024, several states including California, New York, and Illinois are experiencing significant processing delays. California specifically has been flagging returns with certain deductions for manual review, which can add 30-45 days to processing time. Their official guidance states they're working through a backlog from March filings.

This is so much worse than last year! My sister in Arizona got her state refund in 4 days while I'm in New York and I've been waiting 37 days now. Same scenario as OP - pending review with zero explanation. The state websites should be required to give estimated timeframes like the IRS does!

Have we considered that states might intentionally delay refunds for cash flow reasons? I worked in state government accounting for years, and let me tell you - they're not exactly motivated to process refunds quickly. When I was at the department, we had an unofficial policy of processing the smallest refunds first to clear the backlog numbers while holding larger ones for "verification."

State refund reviews are frustrating but unfortunately common. Here's what you should know: • Many states automatically flag returns that exceed certain thresholds • Reviews can take 30-90 days depending on staffing • Some states prioritize reviews based on filing date • The lack of an estimated date is standard procedure during review • You should receive a letter if they need additional documentation Don't wait longer than 45 days before taking more aggressive action!

The review process is typically triggered by specific elements on your return. Common flags include significant year-over-year changes in income, large itemized deductions, self-employment income, or credits like education credits. States don't disclose their exact thresholds to prevent fraud, but these reviews are algorithmic, not personal.

OMG this is so frustrating!!! I'm on day 38 of a state review and I NEED that money for a medical bill due next week! 😫 Called their "customer service" line 4 times and got disconnected each time after waiting 30+ minutes. Can't believe they can just hold our money hostage with no timeline or explanation!!!

I tracked exactly 42 days for my state refund last year when it got stuck in review. What worked for me was calling their tax department directly, but I wasted exactly 3 hours and 17 minutes over 4 days trying to get through their phone system. Finally used Claimyr.com to connect with an actual human at the state tax office in about 22 minutes. The agent confirmed my return was flagged for review but nothing was wrong - they were just backlogged. My refund was processed exactly 3 days after that call.

Idk about these services that get you thru to agents faster. Seems kinda sketch tbh? Like how do they actually get you thru faster than anyone else? Wouldn't everyone just use them if they actually worked? Has anyone else tried this Claimyr thing?

I was skeptical too, but there's a legitimate reason these services work. Here's how it functions: 1. Government phone systems have limited capacity for calls in queue 2. When queues are full, new callers get the "try again later" message 3. Services like Claimyr use automated systems to continually dial until they secure a spot in the queue 4. Once they're in the queue, they connect you to that call 5. You're essentially paying them to handle the redial process for you It's not that they have special access - they're just handling the frustrating part of getting into the queue in the first place. I've used similar services for airline customer service and it saved me hours of frustration.

According to the Taxpayer Bill of Rights (IRC § 7803(a)(3)), you are entitled to clear explanations of tax laws and procedures. While states have their own versions of these rights, most include provisions for timely processing and communication. However, during peak filing season, states can invoke processing delay exceptions under administrative procedure acts. If your review exceeds 60 days, you may have grounds to file a Taxpayer Advocate request, which many states now offer similar to the federal program.

According to the state refund tracker website I found (taxstatusinfo.com), the average review period this year is 32 days! I was freaking out about mine too until I saw that data. My state refund was stuck in review for 29 days and then suddenly appeared in my account this morning with no notification or status change on their website!
