"NY State Tax Refund Stuck in 'Further Review' Status for 6 Weeks - No Timeline Given for 2024 IT-201 Return"
Filed my NY state return 6 weeks ago and its still processing. I checked the NY state tax refund website and all I'm seeing is a message that says "We received your return and it requires further review. This may result in your New York State return taking longer to process than your federal return. No further information is available at this time." I filed Form IT-201 for tax year 2024, and I'm still waiting on my refund. When I go to the website (www8.tax.ny.gov) and enter my information, it just shows this "requires further review" message. There's also something about signing up for email alerts to be notified when my refund is approved, but who knows when that will be. WMR just shows received. No letters in the mail, no updates online, nothing beyond this vague message about "further review." The website mentions "Understanding your refund status" but doesn't give any timeline or explanation for what the review entails. Anyone else dealing with this? Getting worried since I need this money. Has anyone had experience with this "further review" status and how long it took to resolve? I was counting on this refund for some important expenses.

Tax professional here - NYS is notorious for slow processing this year. They're implementing new fraud detection systems which is causing delays. Most returns are taking 8-12 weeks minimum. As long as you haven't received any notices, you're probably fine just stuck in the queue.

Hey guys instead of playing the waiting game, I found this tool called taxr.ai that actually analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly what's happening. It costs $4.99 but totally worth it - gave me a clear timeline and explained all the weird codes. Check it out: https://taxr.ai

Same situation here - filed my NY return in early January and it's been stuck in "further review" for almost 2 months now. Really frustrating because I need that refund for some bills. At least it's good to know I'm not the only one dealing with this mess. Has anyone actually gotten through to a human when calling that number? Might have to bite the bullet and spend the whole day on hold...

I'm in the exact same situation! Filed my NY return in mid-January and it's been stuck in "further review" for 5 weeks now. The lack of communication is really frustrating - like give us SOME kind of timeline or explanation beyond "further review required." I've been checking that NY tax website daily and it's always the same vague message. Really hope they get their act together soon because a lot of people are depending on these refunds for essential expenses.

•Ugh same here! Filed mine around the same time and getting so frustrated with the radio silence. It's like they want us to just sit here and wait indefinitely with zero updates. Really considering trying that taxr.ai thing @Justin Chang mentioned - at least it might give some actual insight into what s'going on instead of this further "review nonsense" 🙄

Been dealing with the same thing for 7 weeks now! Filed my IT-201 in early January and still stuck on that "further review" message. Called the 518-457-5181 number that @Lauren Wood mentioned and actually got through after about 90 minutes on hold. The rep told me they're experiencing unprecedented delays due to system upgrades and increased fraud prevention measures. She couldn't give me a specific timeline but said most returns in review are taking 10-16 weeks this year. Not the answer I wanted but at least it's something more concrete than that useless website message. Hang in there everyone!

•Thanks for actually calling and getting some real info! 10-16 weeks is brutal but at least now we have a realistic timeline instead of just wondering forever. Really appreciate you sharing what the rep told you - way more helpful than anything on their website. Guess I'll stop obsessively checking every day and just settle in for the long haul 😤

Wow, reading through all these experiences makes me feel a bit better knowing I'm not alone in this mess! I filed my NY return on January 15th and have been stuck in that same "further review" limbo for about 6 weeks now. It's so frustrating because I really needed that refund to cover some unexpected car repairs. Thanks to everyone sharing their experiences and especially @Sean Doyle for actually calling and getting some concrete info from them. 10-16 weeks is absolutely ridiculous but at least now I know what to expect instead of hoping it'll magically appear next week. Might try that taxr.ai tool too since the NY website is completely useless. This whole situation is such a joke - they collect our taxes lightning fast but take forever to give us our own money back! 🤦♀️

•Ugh tell me about it! I'm a newcomer here but dealing with the exact same nightmare - filed my NY return end of January and it's been radio silence ever since. The "further review" message is so unhelpful it's not even funny. Really grateful for all the info people are sharing here, especially about the realistic timeline. Definitely going to try calling that number even if it means losing half my day on hold. At this point anything is better than staring at that useless NY tax website! Hope we all get our refunds soon 🤞

Just wanted to chime in as another newcomer dealing with this exact same issue! Filed my NY return on February 3rd and have been stuck in that dreaded "further review" status for about 4 weeks now. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been both comforting (knowing I'm not alone) and terrifying (realizing this could drag on for months). The complete lack of transparency from NY is maddening - like how hard would it be to give us SOME indication of what "further review" actually means or a rough timeline? Thanks to everyone sharing their stories and especially the practical advice about calling. Definitely going to try that 518 number this week even though waiting 90+ minutes sounds brutal. Also considering that taxr.ai tool since the official NY website is basically worthless. Here's hoping we all see some movement soon! 🤞

•Welcome to the club of NY tax refund limbo! 😅 Just wanted to say thanks for sharing your experience - it really does help knowing we're all in this together. February 3rd filing puts you right in the thick of it with the rest of us. That taxr.ai thing several people mentioned might be worth trying since we're all basically flying blind with NY's useless "further review" message. Good luck with calling that number - bring snacks and maybe a good book for the hold time! Hopefully we'll all start seeing some movement soon 🙏

New member here and going through the exact same nightmare! Filed my NY return January 20th and been stuck in that useless "further review" status for 5+ weeks now. Really needed that refund for some medical bills but looks like I'm in for the long haul like everyone else. Super thankful for all the real info being shared here - way more helpful than anything NY provides. Definitely going to try calling that 518 number this week and maybe check out that taxr.ai tool too since the official site is completely worthless. This whole system is beyond frustrating but at least we're all suffering together! Thanks for sharing your experiences everyone 🙃

•Hey Anthony, welcome to the NY tax refund support group! 😔 January 20th filing date puts you right in the thick of this mess with the rest of us. Medical bills make this even more stressful - I totally feel you on needing that money ASAP. Definitely try calling that number @Sean Doyle shared, and yeah the taxr.ai thing might be worth the $5 just to get some actual answers instead of that pointless further "review message." We re'all rooting for each other to get through this disaster! Stay strong 💪

Newcomer here dealing with the exact same mess! Filed my NY return on January 28th and it's been stuck in that infuriating "further review" status for about 5 weeks now. Was really counting on that refund to help with rent but looks like I'm joining the waiting game with everyone else. Reading through all these experiences is both reassuring (not alone!) and depressing (could be months more). Really appreciate everyone sharing actual useful info here - especially @Sean Doyle for calling and getting real timeline estimates. The NY website is absolutely useless with that vague "further review" nonsense. Definitely going to try calling that 518 number even though 90+ minutes on hold sounds brutal. Might also check out that taxr.ai tool since anything has to be better than refreshing the same useless page every day. Thanks for creating this thread @Lily Young - way more helpful than anything NY provides! 🤦♀️

•Hey Emily! Welcome to this frustrating club none of us wanted to join 😅 January 28th puts you right in the same boat as most of us here. Rent stress makes this whole situation so much worse - I totally get it. Really glad @Lily Young started this thread too because it s'been way more informative than anything official from NY! That taxr.ai thing keeps getting mentioned and honestly for $5 it might be worth it just to get some real answers instead of staring at that useless further "review message" every day. Hang in there - we re'all in this together! 💪

Newcomer here and wow, reading through this thread has been both a relief and a nightmare! I filed my NY return on February 5th and have been stuck in that same useless "further review" status for about 3.5 weeks now. Was starting to panic thinking something was wrong with my return but clearly this is just NY being NY this year. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences - especially @Sean Doyle for actually calling and getting concrete info about the 10-16 week timeline. That's brutal but at least it's realistic expectations instead of hoping every day. The complete lack of communication from NY is infuriating - how hard would it be to put an estimated timeline on their website instead of that vague "further review" garbage? Definitely going to try calling that 518 number this week and maybe check out the taxr.ai tool too since their official site is completely worthless. Thanks @Lily Young for starting this thread - it's been way more helpful than anything NY provides! Here's hoping we all see some movement soon 🤞

•Hey Liam! Welcome to the NY tax refund nightmare support group 😩 February 5th filing means you're still relatively early in this mess compared to some of us who've been waiting since January. Totally feel you on the panic - I thought something was wrong with mine too until I found this thread! The lack of communication from NY is absolutely maddening. That taxr.ai tool everyone keeps mentioning might be worth trying just to get SOME actual info instead of that useless "further review" message. We're all hoping for the best but preparing for that 10-16 week timeline @Sean Doyle got from calling. Hang in there! 🤞

Hey everyone! New member here dealing with the exact same frustrating situation. Filed my NY return on January 22nd and it's been stuck in that dreaded "further review" status for about 6 weeks now. Was starting to worry I did something wrong but reading through all your experiences has been incredibly helpful - both comforting to know I'm not alone and terrifying to realize this could drag on for months! Really appreciate @Sean Doyle for actually calling and getting real timeline info from them. 10-16 weeks is absolutely brutal but at least it's concrete expectations instead of that useless "further review requires further review" message on their website. Definitely going to try calling that 518 number this week even though 90+ minutes on hold sounds miserable. Also thinking about trying that taxr.ai tool since literally anything has to be more informative than NY's garbage website. Thanks @Lily Young for starting this thread - it's been way more useful than any official NY resource! Here's hoping we all start seeing some movement soon 🤞

•Hey Hannah! Welcome to this frustrating but helpful community 😅 January 22nd puts you right in the thick of it with most of us here. Six weeks is rough but sadly pretty typical from what we're all experiencing. Really grateful for everyone sharing their stories too - makes this whole mess feel less isolating! That 10-16 week timeline @Sean Doyle got is brutal but honestly better than the complete radio silence from NY s'useless website. Definitely worth trying that phone number even if it means losing half your day on hold. And yeah, that taxr.ai tool keeps coming up - might be worth the $5 just to get some actual answers instead of staring at further "review forever." We re'all in this together! 💪

New member here and dealing with this exact nightmare! Filed my NY return on February 1st and been stuck in that useless "further review" status for about 4 weeks now. Really needed that refund for some urgent home repairs but looks like I'm joining the waiting game with everyone else here. This thread has been incredibly helpful - both reassuring to know it's not just me and sobering to realize how widespread this issue is. Really appreciate @Sean Doyle for actually calling and getting that 10-16 week timeline from them. It's brutal but at least it's realistic expectations instead of that completely unhelpful "further review" message on their website. Definitely going to try calling that 518 number this week even though the hold time sounds miserable.
