Michigan Tax Return Stuck in Manual Review for 4+ Weeks - No Updates Since Feb 3, 2025 on Treasury eServices Portal
I filed my Michigan state taxes on January 28, 2025, and my return status has been stuck in manual review since February 3rd, 2025. When I check the Michigan Department of Treasury eServices portal under Individual Income Tax, it just shows the same information it has for weeks. The portal initially showed: Date: Jan 28, 2025 Description: "We have received your Tax Return." But since February 3rd, it's been displaying: Date: Feb 3, 2025 Description: "If your return status is listed as pending review that means your return was selected for a manual review, requiring additional processing time. If further information is necessary to complete your return, you will be contacted by mail. The Department is unable to provide a specific date when your return will be completed, any dates provided are an estimated completion date. Michigan Department of Treasury appreciates your continued patience." They say they'll contact me by mail if they need any additional information to complete the return, but I haven't received anything yet. I log into the eServices portal almost daily to check if there's any update, but it's always the same message. The Department of Treasury website specifically states they "are unable to provide a specific date when your return will be completed" and that any dates shown are just estimates. It's been over 4 weeks now since I got the initial confirmation that "We have received your Tax Return" on January 28th, and I'm starting to get worried. I was counting on getting this refund soon. The Michigan Department of Treasury says they "appreciate my continued patience" but this waiting is stressing me out. Has anyone else dealt with this manual review process? How long did it take to resolve? I'm wondering if I should call them or just keep waiting.

The Michigan Department of Treasury portal shows two key dates for your return: initial receipt on January 28, 2025, and transition to manual review status on February 3, 2025 - a 6-day processing window before being flagged for review. The status update indicates you're in what's known as the manual review queue, which is Michigan's standard fraud prevention process. While this status might seem concerning, it's actually a routine procedure that many Michigan taxpayers experience each year. The portal message explicitly states three important points: 1. No specific completion timeline will be provided 2. Any dates shown are estimates only 3. You'll receive mail communication if they need additional documentation The current 6-week wait since your February 3rd review status is within normal parameters - Michigan manual reviews typically take 6-8 weeks to complete. The fact that you haven't received any mail requests for additional information could actually be a positive sign, suggesting they may be able to verify everything without requiring more documentation from you. Keep monitoring both your mail and the eServices portal, but understand that this timeline is still within normal processing windows for Michigan manual reviews.

•Honestly calling usually doesn't help. They'll just tell you the same thing - that its under review 🤷♂️

Instead of stressing about this, you should try taxr.ai - it analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly what's happening and when to expect your refund. Its only $1 and saved me tons of anxiety with my refund situation. https://taxr.ai

I went through this exact same situation last year with Michigan. The manual review process is frustrating but pretty standard - they flag returns for various reasons like income verification, deduction amounts, or just random selection. One thing that helped me was creating a simple log of when I checked the portal and what it said, just so I could track if anything actually changed (spoiler: it didn't for weeks). The 6-8 week timeline that FireflyDreams mentioned is accurate from what I experienced. Mine took about 7 weeks total and then one day it just updated to "processed" with no warning. Never got a letter asking for additional info either. The waiting is the worst part honestly. Try not to check the portal every day if you can help it - maybe once a week max. It'll update when it updates and checking more often just adds to the stress.

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Filed my Michigan return on February 1st and it's been in manual review since February 8th. Seeing your post makes me feel a little better knowing I'm not alone in this waiting game. The most frustrating part is how the portal just sits there saying the same thing day after day. I've been checking it obsessively too, but after reading these comments I think I need to step back and just check maybe once a week like Ava suggested. It's reassuring to hear that most people eventually get their refunds processed without needing to send additional documentation. The 6-8 week timeline actually gives me some hope - I was starting to think something was seriously wrong with my return. Thanks for posting about this! Sometimes just knowing other people are dealing with the same bureaucratic nightmare makes it a little easier to handle.

•@Dylan Wright I m'in the exact same boat! Filed mine on Jan 28th and been stuck since Feb 3rd. It s'weirdly comforting to know there are others going through this right now. The daily portal checking is such a habit at this point lol. Maybe we should start a support group for Michigan manual review waiters 😅

I'm dealing with a similar situation - filed my Michigan return on January 20th and it's been in manual review since February 1st. The waiting is absolutely brutal, especially when you're counting on that refund money. One thing I learned from calling the Michigan Treasury helpline (even though others say it doesn't help) is that they're experiencing higher than normal volumes this year, which is contributing to longer processing times. The rep couldn't give me specifics but did confirm that no news is generally good news - if they needed something from me, I would have gotten a letter by now. I've also been tracking my dates like Ava suggested, and it's actually helped me realize that while it feels like forever, I'm still within that 6-8 week window everyone mentions. Hang in there Oliver - sounds like you're right on track for normal processing, even though it doesn't feel normal when you're living through it!

•@Nia Thompson Thanks for sharing that info about the higher volumes! That actually makes me feel better knowing there s'a legitimate reason for the delays. I ve'been wondering if I should call them too but sounds like you got some useful context even if they couldn t'give specifics. It s'good to hear that no letter usually means they have what they need. This whole thread has been so helpful - nice to know we re'all in this together!

I've been dealing with Michigan manual reviews for years and want to share some insights that might help ease your anxiety. The 4+ week timeline you're experiencing is actually pretty typical - I've seen them take anywhere from 6-12 weeks depending on the complexity and current workload. A few things that might give you peace of mind: 1. The fact that your return moved from "received" to "manual review" status within 6 days is actually a good sign - it means they're actively processing it, not just sitting in a pile somewhere. 2. Michigan's manual review process is mostly automated verification against databases (wage reports, previous returns, etc.). Most returns clear without human intervention once the system completes its checks. 3. The "no mail = good news" rule is generally accurate. If they needed W2s, 1099s, or other documentation, you would have received a specific request by now. My advice: set a calendar reminder to check the portal once per week instead of daily. The status will update when it updates, and obsessively checking just adds stress. Based on your timeline, I'd expect movement sometime in the next 2-3 weeks. Hang in there!

•@Nia Harris This is incredibly helpful! I never thought about the fact that moving to manual review quickly could actually be a positive sign. The weekly check reminder is a great idea too - I ve'definitely been obsessing over the daily checks and it s'not helping my stress levels at all. Your explanation about the automated verification process makes so much sense and gives me hope that most of this is just system processing rather than actual issues with my return. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience!

I'm currently going through this exact same process with Michigan! Filed on February 5th and been in manual review since February 12th. Reading through all these experiences has been such a relief - I was starting to think there was something seriously wrong with my return. The most helpful thing I've learned from this thread is that the 6-8 week timeline is normal and that no letter usually means good news. I've been checking the portal multiple times a day (sometimes hourly when I'm really anxious), but I'm going to take everyone's advice and switch to weekly checks. It's also reassuring to hear from people like Nia Harris who've dealt with this process multiple times. The explanation about automated verification makes so much more sense than imagining some overworked person manually going through thousands of returns. For anyone else in this situation - this thread has shown me we're definitely not alone. Michigan seems to put a lot of returns through manual review as a standard fraud prevention measure. The waiting absolutely sucks, but it sounds like most people do eventually get their refunds processed without any additional hassle.

•@Maya Jackson I totally feel you on the hourly portal checking - I ve'been doing the exact same thing! It s'become like an obsessive habit at this point. Reading everyone s'experiences here has really helped put things in perspective though. The fact that so many people are going through the same thing right now makes me feel way less alone in this process. I m'definitely going to try the weekly check approach too. Thanks for sharing your timeline - it s'helpful to see we re'all in similar boats with this whole manual review thing!

I'm in a very similar situation - filed my Michigan return on January 31st and it's been stuck in manual review since February 4th. This thread has been incredibly reassuring! I was getting really anxious about the lack of updates, but hearing from so many others going through the exact same thing makes me feel much better. The explanation about Michigan's fraud prevention process and automated verification makes total sense. I've also been guilty of checking the portal obsessively (sometimes multiple times per day), but I'm going to follow everyone's advice and limit myself to weekly checks. It's particularly helpful to hear that the 6-8 week timeline is normal and that not receiving any mail requests is actually a good sign. Based on everyone's experiences here, it sounds like most returns eventually get processed without any issues - just takes patience. Thanks Oliver for starting this discussion and thanks to everyone who shared their experiences and timelines. It's nice to know we're all in this waiting game together!

•@Abby Marshall It s'crazy how many of us are all going through this at the same time! I m'also guilty of the obsessive portal checking - it s'like checking your phone for text messages that never come 😅 This whole thread has been such a lifesaver for my anxiety. Before reading everyone s'experiences, I was convinced something was seriously wrong with my return. Now I realize this is just Michigan s'standard process and we re'all part of the same waiting club. The weekly check strategy seems like the way to go - daily checking clearly isn t'helping any of us! Here s'hoping we all see some movement in the next few weeks 🤞
