Michigan State Tax Return Still Under Review - Filed 3 Months Ago

Filed my Michigan state taxes months ago and still showing under review. Anyone else stuck in this situation? Starting to get worried since I usually get my refund within a few weeks. Called multiple times but keep getting the generic response to just wait.

Michigan tax specialist here - there's currently a significant backlog of returns under review. They're being extra cautious this year due to increased fraud attempts. Average wait time is now 12-16 weeks for returns flagged for review. Best thing to do is ensure all your wage documents match your reported income exactly.

ugh seriously? 16 weeks is crazy 😤 do you know if theres anything that triggers the review?

Most common triggers: multiple W2s, significant changes from last year, or claiming certain credits. But sometimes its just random selection tbh

Hey guys instead of playing detective, I started using taxr.ai to analyze my transcripts. Its only $1 and tells you exactly whats going on and when to expect your refund. Way better than guessing or waiting on hold with the MI tax office https://taxr.ai

This is super frustrating! I'm in the exact same situation - filed my Michigan return in November and still waiting. The uncertainty is the worst part. Have you tried checking your account transcript online? Sometimes that shows more details than the generic "under review" status. Also wondering if anyone knows if Michigan pays interest on delayed refunds like the IRS does?

Hey Benjamin! I just went through this same nightmare. Michigan does NOT pay interest on delayed refunds unfortunately (unlike federal). The transcript thing is hit or miss - sometimes it just shows the same "under review" status. What really helped me was calling first thing Monday morning at 8am sharp. Got through after 20 mins instead of the usual 2+ hours. They actually told me my return was in "secondary review" which wasn't showing online. Might be worth a shot!

I'm going through the same exact thing! Filed my Michigan return in December and it's been "under review" ever since. The waiting game is absolutely brutal, especially when you're counting on that refund. I've tried calling but like you said, just get the same "please wait" response. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences here - at least now I know I'm not alone and this seems to be a widespread issue this year. Definitely going to try that early morning call strategy someone mentioned!

Hang in there @Javier Mendoza! I'm also dealing with this mess - filed mine in January and still stuck in review limbo. It's so frustrating when you need that money! I've been checking the Michigan Treasury site obsessively but no updates. Has anyone had luck with contacting their state rep about delayed refunds? I'm wondering if that might help get things moving faster than just waiting it out.

This whole situation is such a mess! I filed my Michigan return back in October and I'm still stuck in the same "under review" purgatory. What's really frustrating is that there's zero transparency about what's actually causing the delay or when it might be resolved. I've been tempted to try that taxr.ai thing someone mentioned, but honestly I'm just exhausted from this whole process. At this point I'm wondering if it's worth reaching out to my state representative like someone suggested - has anyone actually had success with that approach?

@Yara Assad I totally feel your frustration! October filing and still waiting is absolutely insane. I actually did reach out to my state rep s'office about 2 weeks ago and they said they d'look "into it but" haven t'heard back yet. Might be worth a shot though - at least it makes you feel like you re'doing something proactive instead of just sitting around waiting! The lack of transparency is definitely the worst part. Like, just tell us what the actual issue is so we can fix it or at least know how much longer to expect!

Filed mine in early January and also stuck in review hell! 😩 What's really getting to me is how Michigan's online portal is so much less informative than the federal system. At least with IRS you get some indication of progress, but Michigan just gives you that generic "under review" status with zero details. I'm definitely going to try calling Monday morning at 8am like someone suggested - seems like the only way to get any real info. Has anyone noticed if certain types of returns (like with multiple W2s or side income) are getting flagged more often this year?
