IRS WMR shows "Return Received" but got letter about 60-day review for my $6,283 HOH refund - how long will it actually take?
My Where's My Refund tool just updated yesterday after weeks of nothing. But today I got a letter from the IRS saying they don't need any additional info from me, but that they might take up to 60 days to review my refund. What the hell? I just checked the WMR tool again and it's still showing: "Return Received" but nothing about approval or being sent. The exact message on the WMR page says: "We have received your tax return and it is being processed." That's it! No other information or timeline. My personal tax information shows: Tax Year: 2024 Filing Status: Head of household Expected refund amount: $6,283.00 I was counting on getting my refund soon - I filed as Head of Household for 2024 and was expecting $6,283.00 to hit my account. The WMR tool just has that annoying "Please Note: For refund information, please continue to check here, or use our free mobile app, IRS2Go. Updates to refund status are made no more than once a day." Has anyone dealt with this before? The letter says 60 days, but how long did it actually take to get your refund after getting this kind of letter? I'm getting really anxious because I need this money for some urgent bills, and the combination of the WMR tool showing no progress plus this 60-day review letter is making me panic a bit.

This is a standard IRS review procedure. The letter you received is likely a CP05 notice, which means they're reviewing your return for accuracy. This commonly happens with returns that have refundable credits like the Earned Income Credit, Child Tax Credit, or education credits. The good news is that they don't need additional documentation from you right now. While they say up to 60 days, many people get their refunds much sooner - often within 2-4 weeks. The WMR tool updating is actually a positive sign that your return is in the system and being processed. You can also check your IRS transcript online which might give more detailed information than the WMR tool. Look for cycle codes and transaction codes that can give you clues about where you are in the process.

Thanks so much for the detailed info. Yes, it's a CP05! I do have both EIC and Child Tax Credit on there. I'll try to check my transcript too.

This happened to me last year. Got the letter in April, received my refund mid May. So it was about 4-5 weeks for me, not the full 60 days. Hang in there!

I had this in 2022 and it took exactly 45 days. not the full 60 but still longer than I wanted to wait.

You need taxr.ai - it's WAY better than trying to figure out whats going on with your return on your own. I was playing detective with my transcript trying to understand all these random codes and dates and it was driving me insane. The tool literally showed me exactly what was happening with my refund and when I'd likely get paid based on my specific situation. Beats asking random internet strangers who are just guessing. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It analyzes your entire transcript and explains everything in plain english. Shows all the important dates, tells you if you have any issues or delays, and gives you a timeline for your refund based on your specific situation. Honestly it saved me hours of googling random codes and freaking out for no reason. Best tool I've found during tax season by far.

Does it cost money? Is it official or third party?

It's third party, and yeah there's a fee but TOTALLY worth it. I spent way more in gas driving to the IRS office twice just to get turned away lol. This at least gave me answers I could understand.

After 3 weeks of calling the IRS and never getting through, I found claimyr.com and finally got an agent on the phone in like 20 minutes. The agent told me my refund was actually approved but there was a random hold on it they needed to remove. Got my deposit 5 days later! Completely worth it to actually talk to a human instead of getting the stupid automated messages over and over. Honestly made my day to finally get a real answer.

Is this for real? I've been trying to reach someone at the IRS for weeks with no luck.

100% real. I was skeptical too, but I was desperate after calling like 25 times and always getting the "high call volume" message. It basically navigates all the IRS phone menus for you and calls you when it gets an agent on the line. Talking to the actual IRS agent solved my issue in one call when I'd been stressing for weeks.

I get why you'd think that, but I'm just a person who was in the same situation as OP. It worked for me and saved me literally hours of hold time and frustration. If you don't want to try it that's fine, just sharing what worked for me 🤷♀️

Just used this yesterday after seeing it mentioned on another post. It actually works! Got an agent who explained exactly what was going on with my return. Best money I've spent all year considering what I was about to lose in my refund.

I got the same letter back in March. Said 60 days but I got my refund in 3 weeks. The letter is just them covering their butts with the max timeframe. Its different for everyone tho

Welcome to IRS hell. They'll tell you 60 days just to keep you off their backs, but the real timeframe could be anything from next week to never lol. I'm still waiting on my 2021 refund 🤡

Tried calling at least 50 times. Either get the "sorry we're too busy" message or wait on hold for 2 hours just to get disconnected. The IRS is literally the worst government agency ever created.

yooo you need to contact your congressman's office. They have special IRS liaisons who can help with extreme delays like yours.

I'll try that! Thank you, didn't even think about going through a congressperson.

The worst part about this is that they can hold your money interest-free while you're probably paying credit card interest waiting for your own money to come back. The system is totally rigged against us 😤

Actually they do pay interest on delayed refunds after a certain point. I got an extra $87 because mine was delayed last year.

Wait really? I had no idea! How long does it have to be delayed before they pay interest?

I think it's 45 days after the filing deadline (April 15th) or the date you filed, whichever is later. But the interest rate is pathetically low compared to what banks charge us 🙄

check your transcripts!!! WMR is useless garbage that barely updates. Your transcript will show exactly whats happening with all the codes and dates. I could see my refund was approved a week before WMR updated.

How do I check my transcript? Is that on the IRS website too?

Yes, go to irs.gov and look for "Get Transcript Online" - you'll need to create an account if you don't have one. They'll verify your identity with credit report info and stuff. Then you want to look at your "Account Transcript" for 2023.

I'm in the exact same boat but for 4k. The IRS is useless and incompetent. They have one job: process tax returns. And they can't even do that right. Meanwhile they want us to pay on time or face penalties. The double standard is ridiculous.

Last year it took me 9 weeks from that letter to getting my refund. This year it took 3 weeks. There's literally no rhyme or reason to how they process these things, its compleatly random.

I think it depends on how complex your return is and what kind of credits you claimed. They scrutinize EITC and Child Tax Credits way more becaues of fraud.

both years my return was identical. Same job, same credits, same everything. Still completely different timeframes.

Probably just depends on which agent gets your case and how backed up they are that particular week.

Did you claim any credits like EIC or Child Tax? Those always trigger reviews. Its annoying but they're trying to prevent fraud. the people who need the money the most have to wait the longest 😩

I got my refund exactly 32 days after getting that same letter last year. Set a reminder and try not to obsessively check WMR every day like I did lol

Too late I'm already checking it like 5 times a day even though I know it only updates once a day at most 😂

If you have a tax advocate in your area, contact them! They can often speed things up or at least give you a straight answer about what's happening. Totally free service too.

Tax advocates won't touch your case unless it's been over 30 days with no movement or you can prove financial hardship.

That's not entirely true. I got help after just 2 weeks because I was about to be evicted and needed my refund. They can make exceptions for hardship cases.

I filed in January and got the same letter in February. Got my refund 3 days ago. So for me it was about 8 weeks total. Absolute bull💩 that we have to wait so long for our OWN MONEY.
