What just happened? Illinois Tax Refund deposited with zero updates or notification
I've been checking my Illinois state tax return status every couple days since I filed back in March 2024. The website always showed "processing" with no estimated date. I was getting pretty frustrated since its been almost 3 months. But then yesterday I randomly checked my bank account and saw a deposit from Illinois Department of Revenue! The weird thing is the status page STILL says processing when I check it today. Has this happened to anyone else? I'm not complaining about getting my money but it feels weird that there was absolutely no notification or status update before the money showed up.

This is actually pretty common with Illinois. Their systems don't talk to each other very well. The refund processing system and the website status tracker are completely separate, and the status page often doesn't update until days or even weeks after your refund has been processed and sent. A few things to know about Illinois tax refunds: - Their official processing time is up to 90 days, though it's usually faster - The "Where's My Refund" tool is notoriously unreliable and slow to update - Some people never see their status change from "processing" even after receiving payment - They don't send email notifications when refunds are issued You're definitely not alone in this experience. Just be glad you got your refund! Some people wait much longer.

•Thanks for the detailed response! I guess Im just used to the federal refund system where everything is updated in real time (or at least it seems that way). 90 days is crazy long but at least i got it!

•The whole Illinois tax system is stuck in 1995 i swear. Fed return came in 2 weeks, IL took almost 4 months last year

I had a similar issue but with my federal return. Was driving me crazy trying to figure out what was happening by looking at my transcript and Where's My Refund tool. Finally discovered taxr.ai and it was a game changer. It analyzed my transcript and explained exactly what was happening with my return and when I could expect my refund. Saved me hours of research and confusion! If you need to understand what's going on with your federal taxes in the future, definitely check it out (https://taxr.ai). State taxes are always their own weird thing though.

•Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

•It's way more than just reading the transcript! It actually explains all the codes, dates, and amounts in plain English, tells you what stage your return is in, and gives you a timeline of what's happened and what to expect next. It also flags any issues that might delay your refund. Like having an AI tax expert look at your specific situation. Seriously changed everything for me - no more guessing what random codes mean!

•Nah, just a tool that helped me when I was tearing my hair out trying to understand why my refund was delayed for months. Wish I'd known about it sooner! You can try it or not, just sharing what worked for me 🤷♂️

After waiting forever with my Illinois return stuck in processing last year, I finally found a way to actually talk to a human! Used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected with an actual Illinois Department of Revenue agent. Literally got a callback in about 20 minutes after trying for weeks on my own. The agent explained exactly what was happening with my return and fixed an issue right on the spot. Totally worth every penny considering how much time I wasted trying to get through on my own.

•Wait for real? I've been calling the IL dept of revenue for days and can't get through. How much did it cost?

•They don't advertise the exact price cause I think it varies, but honestly getting a real person on the phone who could actually help was priceless after weeks of frustration. They basically just handle the hold time for you and call you when an agent is ready. Changed my whole experience.

•sounds sketchy af... how do u know its legit?

•I've used it too. It's just a service that navigates the phone tree and waits on hold for you. They call you when they get a human. Definitely legit - even got mentioned in some news articles.

•Yeah exactly what they said ^^. It's just a call back service. They don't ask for any tax info or anything sensitive. Just your phone number to call you when they get an agent. Saved me literal hours of hold time.

illinois is always weird with tax refunds. last year mine just showed up in my mailbox as a paper check even tho i requested direct deposit. no updates on the website at all. 🤡 state

Just be happy you got your money lol. Some people wait 6+ months for IL refunds. Their system is ancient and completely disconnected from their tracking tools. My theory is they manually update the tracker and half the time they just forget to do it.

•I waited 7 MONTHS last year 😑 Called multiple times and they always said "still processing" with no explanation.

•they said something about "additional verification" but wouldn't specify. im convinced they just use that as an excuse when theyre behind

This literally happend to me too! Filed in February, website still said processing but money hit my account last week. The Illinois tax website is useless, don't waste your time checking it. I've learned to just forget about it after filing and be pleasantly surprised when it eventually shows up.

Random question: was your refund amount exactly what you expected? IL adjusted mine down by like $40 with zero explanation and I'm still salty about it.

•Yeah it was the exact amount I calculated in my return. That's weird they changed yours without explanation.

•ugh figures. now i gotta decide if $40 is worth spending hours on the phone with them 🙃

I work in IT and I can tell you with 100% certainty that state government systems are held together with duct tape and prayers. Most states are running critical tax infrastructure on ancient systems and databases from the 80s and 90s. The web interfaces are just bolted on top and rarely sync properly. Consider yourself lucky it worked at all!

•This is so true. I did consulting for a state agency (not IL) and their main tax system was running on COBOL. In 2021.

•Lol my cousin works for our state tax dept and says they still use DOS for some processes 💀

•Not surprised at all. The problem is always budget - nobody wants to fund the massive overhaul these systems need, so they just keep patching and hoping things don't completely fall apart. Modernizing would save millions in the long run but try explaining that to politicians who want immediate results.

Might wanna double check that it actually came from Illinois Dept of Revenue for real. Lots of scams out there. Though usually scammers don't GIVE you money lmao

•The deposit definitely came from IL Dept of Revenue, shows the official name on my bank statement. Plus it matches what my refund was supposed to be.

I've been researching this issue for hours tryin to decode my transcript and figure out where my IL refund is. Honestly you might want to look into this tool I found called taxr.ai - it basically analyzes your federal transcript and tells you exactly what all those cryptic codes mean and where your return is in the process. I was spinning my wheels for WEEKS before I tried it, and I immediately understood exactly what was happening with my return. https://taxr.ai saved me so much headache.

•How does this help with state refunds tho? Pretty sure it's just for federal transcripts. The problem here is with Illinois.

QuantumQuester
•Good point - it's specifically for federal tax transcripts. I mentioned it because a lot of times state and federal returns have related issues. But you're right, for a purely state problem like OP's where the money already arrived, it wouldn't help in this specific case.

pro tip: never expect the IL web tools to be accurate. The phone system is equally useless most of the time. After endless frustration with both my federal and IL returns last year, I started using Claimyr for phone support (claimyr.com) and taxr.ai for my federal transcript. Lifesavers when you're stuck in tax return purgatory.

•they don't need any sensitive info, just your phone number so they can call you when they get an agent on the line. it's basically just a service that waits on hold for you. totally changed the game for me after spending literally 6+ hours trying to get through myself.

I was wondering what kinda tax law lets Illinois hold onto your money for 3 months without paying interest. That's literally money you overpaid them that they're using interest-free. But whatever, glad you got it!

Same thing happened to me! Filed my IL return in February and the status page said "processing" for months. Then boom - refund showed up in my account last week with zero warning. The status STILL says processing even now. It's like their left hand doesn't know what their right hand is doing. At least we got our money but man, their system is completely broken. Would be nice to get some kind of notification when they actually send the refund instead of having to randomly discover it in your bank account!

•Right?! It's so frustrating that there's literally no communication from their end. Like, would it kill them to send a simple email saying "hey, your refund is on the way"? Instead we're all just randomly checking our bank accounts hoping money magically appears. At least now I know for next year to just file and forget about it instead of obsessively checking that useless status page!
