IRS installment agreement doubling early - How to fix?
Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle with my IRS installment agreement. I noticed last month that my monthly payment is set to double at the end of this month, but it's not supposed to increase until next year! I called them about it, and they told me to call back this month to get it fixed. Has anyone else dealt with something like this? Any advice on how to handle it when I call them back?

Ugh, classic IRS mixup. I had a similar issue last year. Make sure you have all your paperwork ready when you call them back. And be prepared to wait on hold for ages 🙄

fr tho the hold times are insane. I once waited 3 hours just to get disconnected ðŸ˜

Pro tip: call first thing in the morning when they open. Usually shorter wait times

I found a method to get someone on the phone quickly. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's the link: https://www.claimyr.com

Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

Has anyone else tried this? Kinda skeptical about paying for a call...

I get the skepticism, but it's totally legit. Saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo

Here's what you need to do: 1. Gather all your documents related to the installment agreement 2. Call the IRS and explain the situation calmly 3. Ask for a reference number for the call 4. Request written confirmation of any changes made 5. Follow up with a written letter summarizing the call If they give you any trouble, ask to speak with a supervisor. Don't let them push you around!

This is solid advice. I'd add: take notes during the call with names and badge numbers of who you talk to

Have you tried checking your account online? Sometimes you can make adjustments there without calling

Have you checked your online account? Sometimes you can make adjustments there without calling. Might be worth a shot before you waste time on hold.

Ive been in the same boat. Make sure to get EVERYTHING in writing. The IRS 'lost' my adjustment paperwork twice before it finally got sorted. Don't trust them to handle it without proof!

Quick question - how long have you had this installment agreement? There might be some rules about when they can increase payments that could help your case.

I've had it for about 2 years now. The increase wasn't supposed to happen until the 3-year mark

That's good info. Definitely mention that when you call. They should honor the original agreement terms.

Hot take: maybe just let it double and pay it off faster? 🤔 Less interest in the long run

Wish I could, but my budget is already tight. Can't afford the double payment rn 😕
