Got IRS final balance due letter, need advice on setting up payment plan ASAP!
Hey everyone, I just got a final balance due letter from the IRS and I'm freaking out a little. I can't find my tax returns right now, but I know I need to set up some kind of payment plan. Has anyone gone through this before? What should I expect when I call them? I'm pretty nervous about the whole thing.

Don't panic! I've been there before. First thing's first, that letter is actually really important. When you call, make sure to mention you have the final balance due letter. They can use that to pull up your info. Here's what I'd suggest: 1. Figure out how much you can afford monthly 2. Call and ask about different installment options 3. Be ready to discuss your financial situation They're usually pretty helpful if you're proactive about setting up a plan. Good luck!

Thanks so much! This is really helpful. Do you remember how long the call took? I'm trying to plan my day around it.

No problem! It can vary, but mine took about 45 minutes. The hold time was the worst part tho, probably waited like an hour 🙄

An hour?! Jeez, I don't have time for that. There's gotta be a better way.

Hey, I found a way to skip the hold time! I used this site called claimyr.com - it's a calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, and then sends the call to your phone when a live agent picks up. It costs $20, but it saved me hours of waiting. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Jc9x-gysK0

Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

I get the skepticism, but it's legit. I was desperate after being on hold for 2 hours and gave it a shot. Worked like a charm. The $20 was worth it for me, but ymmv 🤷♂️

Pro tip: if you can't pay the full amount, ask about an Offer in Compromise. It's where you settle for less than what you owe. Not everyone qualifies, but it's worth asking!

This! 👆 My cousin did this and ended up paying way less than he originally owed. Definitely worth looking into.

Make sure you have all your ducks in a row before you call. They might ask for your income, expenses, assets, etc. The more prepared you are, the smoother it'll go. And don't be afraid to ask questions - it's your right to understand what's going on with your taxes!

This is great advice, thank you! Do you know if they'll want exact numbers or just estimates?

They prefer exact numbers, but estimates are okay if that's all you have. Just be honest about it being an estimate. They might ask you to follow up with exact figures later.

Has anyone tried negotiating the amount owed? I've heard sometimes they'll reduce penalties if you have a good reason.

Yeah, I got some penalties waived once. Had to prove financial hardship tho. It's called First Time Penalty Abatement if you've never had issues before.

Whatever you do, DON'T ignore the letter. That's the worst thing you can do. Trust me, I learned the hard way 😭

Fun fact: the IRS has more employees than the FBI. Yet somehow they still can't answer the phone in a reasonable time 🙃
