Need help setting up IRS payment plan for 2 years of past due taxes - what to expect?

Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle. I've got 2 years of past due taxes and I need to set up a payment plan with the IRS. Has anyone gone through this process before? What should I expect when I call them? Any tips or advice would be really appreciated!

I found a way to solve setting up IRS payment plan, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImgO7wnjf4g

I've been through this before. Here's what you need to do: 1. Call the IRS and tell them you want to set up an installment agreement. 2. Be prepared to explain your situation - why you couldn't pay and how much you can afford monthly. 3. They'll ask about your income and expenses, so have that info ready. 4. Be polite but firm. Remember, they deal with this all day. 5. Ask about different payment options - they have short-term and long-term plans. 6. Find out about interest and penalties - sometimes they can be reduced. 7. Get everything in writing once you agree on a plan. Good luck! It's stressful, but you'll feel better once it's sorted.

This is solid advice! 👍 I'd add: make sure you file all your tax returns even if you can't pay. They're more willing to work with you if you're compliant.

@profile 3 It took me about an hour on the phone, then a couple weeks to get the official agreement. Not as bad as I thought it would be, tbh.

Have you considered getting a tax professional to help? They can sometimes negotiate better terms with the IRS.

I hadn't thought of that. Do you know if it's expensive to hire someone?

It can be, but sometimes it's worth it. Shop around for quotes. Some offer free consultations.

Whatever you do, DON'T ignore it. I did that and ended up owing wayyy more in penalties. 😭

I found a way to get through to a real person without the endless hold times. There's this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that dials the IRS, navigates the phone menu, waits on hold, and then calls you when an agent picks up. It costs $20, but it saved me hours of frustration. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Jc9x-gysK0

Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

Yep, 100% legit. I was skeptical too, but it worked like a charm. Saved me from pulling my hair out on hold!

How does it actually work? Do they give you a special number to call or something?

@profile 9 You just go to their website, choose the IRS line you need, pay, and they start calling. When an agent picks up, they connect you. Simple as that.

Pro tip: if you can pay it all off within 120 days, you might qualify for a short-term payment plan with lower fees. Worth asking about!

am i the only 1 who thinks its ridiculous we have to jump through all these hoops just to pay what we owe? 🙄 the system is broken af

Preach! 🙌 It's like they WANT us to mess up so they can charge more penalties.

Ikr? Other countries just send you a bill. Why can't we do that? 🤔

Make sure you keep making estimated tax payments for the current year while you're paying off the old stuff. Don't wanna dig the hole deeper, ya know?

Has anyone tried negotiating an Offer in Compromise? I've heard you can settle for less than you owe if you're really in a tough spot.

I looked into it, but its super hard to qualify. They basically want you to be on the verge of homelessness 🏠❌

My cousin did it successfully, but he had to prove extreme hardship. It's not an easy process.
